Future NRL Stadiums

You would have to flatten Parra and rebuild to get what the above posters want, which is impossible.

Parra Stadium only got approval on the grounds that it was barely noticable from the outside and had minimum impact on its surrounds. It would never get permission to become a 40k RL mecca.

The Parra skyline has changed alot in that time though. The Cities Taskforce plan of 2006 now allows for development of up to 200m around the trainstation and 120m and 80m in other parts of the CBD. The reason for any plan being knocked back would be based on dollars/logistics not aesthetics.

My point about Parra Stadium isn't that it's the ideal spot but rather it's already one of the chosen strategic venues to be centrally managed by the NSW government and it's the most viable option for staged development. Ideally we'd build a new modern 40,000 seat stadium from scratch on a perfect site but that means coming up with $350m in one go. Unfortunately we missed the opportunity to get it right at Homebush when the big money was on offer so now we have to make do with building on what we've got.

The best of what we've got in western Sydney that we can build on is Parra. We can start with spending say $90m to replace the western stand with a 15,000 seat Suncorp style stand and implement the shared Rugby League Mecca. Then when the next $90m becomes available we can do the same on the eastern side. Design the two stands so a retractable roof can be added between them later. Leave the north end open so the ground gets the sun and even turn it back into a hill to cater to all tastes of Rugby League viewing. As good it gets for a weekly Sunday afternoon at the footy.

And for anybody worried by the parkland argument, well if we can turn Adelaide Oval into a 50,000 seat stadium, anything is possible.

There's a nice chunk of land right next to Central too...

I think we've agreed before that the SFS is far from ideal as far as an inner city venue goes. Unfortunantly its still there and plans to upgrade. This essentially wipes out any chance of another City/Eastern stadium.

Ideally there would be a purpose made 40-50k seat league stadium in either Parra or Liverpool and another in the block that you mention or on reclaimed airspace between central and redfern stations.

That way we could have a set up something like this.

- Canterbury - 12 Games in Western venue
- Wests - 2 games Liechardt, 2 games Campbelltown, 8 Games in West stadium
- Parra - 12 games in Western stadium
- Penrith - 6 games in Penrith, 6 games in Western stadium
- St George Illawarra - 4 Games Wollongong, 2 or 4 Games Kogarah, 4 or 6 Games East/City Stadium
- Souths - 12 games City/East Stadium
- Easts - 12 games City/East Stadium
- Manly - 10 Games Brookvale, 2 games City/East Stadium
- Cronulla - 10 games Shark Park, 2 games city/east stadium

Pipe dreams unfortunantly

So that would be 38 games for the western venue, 32 for the east. If the venues were to get 20000 average attendances, that would equate to 760k and 640k people per year, 1.4m combined. If $10 from tickets went to paying for them, that is $14m per year. And this is not counting crowds from rugby league finals, rugby union or soccer.

If Brisbane can get Suncorp Stadium, which hosts just 1 team for 12 home games, why can't we have something similar in Sydney?

Same argument could be made for AAMI Park, but remember that both venues also host A-League and Super Rugby teams with at least 44 home games for its tenant clubs, plus any finals/friendlies/concerts.

If RL fans were willing to consolidate all Sydney clubs into one or two stadia then the cost-benefit would be there.

I don't think we need to go overboard here.
Parra Stadium, in todays standards is failing miserably, but you'd only know that if you went to a game there with more than 10 000 people. Even for that small attendance, queues for the bars and food outlets are deplorable. Queues for tickets as well.
However, all this talk about 40 and 50 thousand seaters in the west is pie in the sky talk.

A void needs to be filled for an under capacity Parra/Penrith/Campbelltown stadiums and the over capacity ANZ.
30 000 is the perfect number for a community/multi purpose Parra Stadium from which Parra, Tigepies and Panthers could move their bigger games to. Maybe even 32-34 thousand.
Anything bigger than that becomes a white elephant. Any games bigger than some that would be projected at Parra could be moved to Homebush.

Agree, Aami sized would be perfect stadium for wests, eels, bulldogs and panthers to share.
Dragons, sth's and roosters to modernized Allianz. Cronulla and manly to get their stadiums up to 20k modernised grounds. Sydney sorted.

Work begins!

Construction commences at nib Stadium

Portfolio: Sport and Recreation, Finance
Works under way on $95.14million redevelopment
Completion of major construction works expected by March 2013
Sport and Recreation Minister Terry Waldron today turned the sod on the State Government’s $95.14million upgrade of nib Stadium in East Perth.

With work having started on July 2, changes including the dismantling of the temporary eastern and southern grandstands, are already visible onsite.

“Back in June I announced that all temporary sections of nib Stadium would be replaced within the $95.14million budget, and that BGC Construction had been awarded the head construction contract for the redevelopment,” Mr Waldron said.

“The Department of Sport and Recreation has assisted BGC in arranging the removal of the temporary grandstands and the builder has wasted no time getting started, ensuring this project progresses at a pace to minimise impact on the sporting codes involved.”

Finance Minister Simon O’Brien said he was pleased with the progress of work and was looking forward to another State Government project being delivered on-time and on-budget.

Ey
Cronulla has had 20 k lots of times.
ET hill is great for kids who want to run around and not really watch the game.
Putting seats there would probably make crowds smaller.
I know my kid spends half the game on the hill and he has a season seat in the PB stand with me.

'Title will fast-track enclosed stadium'

Date September 12, 2012

Raiders chief executive Don Furner believes a Raiders premiership would fast-track a proposal to build an enclosed stadium in Canberra's CBD by 2017.
Fairfax obtained figures which revealed the Raiders had run their home matches at a loss on six occasions this year.
On a cold and miserable night in the nation's capital back in round 24, the Raiders attracted just 8860 fans for their home game against the Roosters, losing $14,000 because their game day operations cost more than what they earned at the gate.
The ACT government has proposed a $280 million development, which would require $180 million of funding from the federal government, to be built in the heart of the city.

Furner believes a title this season would only add merit to the push from the Raiders, as well as Super Rugby franchise ACT Brumbies, to have the roofed stadium built in the next five years.
''If we win the grand final we'd get even more leverage to push that,'' Furner said. ''I think we're the one city in Australia that deserves an enclosed stadium. The plans are afoot. We've had meetings with the ACT government. The government themselves are very keen on building a closed stadium back in the city.
''I think it would be fantastic for Canberra. It would bring some life back into the city.
''Our players would move in there and we'd move our training base back in there. It'd have restaurants and pubs like the SFS and Melbourne, which is not what Canberra is renowned for.''
While the Raiders didn't pocket the profit - because the finals are run by the NRL - they still lured almost 25,000 fans into Canberra Stadium for last Sunday's final against the Sharks.
Furner believes an enclosed stadium would attract similar crowd figures on a weekly basis in Canberra.
''Absolutely we can get it weekly if we have it,'' he said.
''I went to Origin two in Melbourne, and I'd never been to that enclosed stadium. It was cold and windy outside, but inside it was 22 degrees. It did dawn on me how good it could be for Canberra.
''We'd love to get more Sunday afternoon games. I always ask to get the reverse of what the Cowboys have got. They get Saturday nights because it's too hot in the day up there. Imagine how hard it is for us getting people to come out in zero or minus one temperatures on a Monday night in the middle of August.''
The stadium, which would be used for rugby league, rugby union and football, would also provide the club with an opportunity to boost its corporate partners, who are reluctant to brave the cold conditions and fork out big money for outdoor seating.
Sport Minister Andrew Barr was in New Zealand during the rugby world cup earlier in the year and looked at Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin as a model for what could be built in Canberra.
The state government has already shown drafts of the stadium to the Raiders.

Hmmm, not too sure what to make of this.

That stadium in Dunedin is a beaut and if it was built in the heart of town it'd be great in a lot of ways.

But, we'd be trading away one of our biggest advantages - the cold Canberra winter.

Having said that, I think there's about as much chance of it getting built as Souths winning the grand final this year so it's probably a moot point.
