Latest pics from nib stadium redevelopment. Due to be complete in March and then they will relay the pitch end of S15 in July so I would imagine the 3 NRL games to be played in Perth will be early and late rounds. In other stadium news announced yesterday # the new Burswood stadium will be reconfigurable to rectangle by bringing in 5000 extra seats, this will bring the capacity up to 65K. SOO in Perth in 2016? Nice way to get a buzz before the Pirates enter in 2017!

South stand nearly finished

New main stand. Very steep angle putting fans on top of the action

Thanks for the update, great to see a modern rectangular stadium in WA.

With the NRL's wealth and the desire for 20K+ crowds to all games by 2017? will teams like Cronulla, Manly and the Tigers be forced to move to ANZ/Allianz?

The last I heard was that Shark Park was getting an upgrade due to the development.

Would upgraded versions of Penrith, Parra, Campbelltown and ANZ/Allianz be the 5 stadiums that hold most of Sydney's games if the push for 20K crowds was to go ahead?

Would 65.000 Perth people (what is the demonym for people from Perth anyway, Perthians?) show up to a State of Origin match if it were held there?

Cronulla development was stage 3 from memory, so still a long way off.

Tigers are better place then saints are with their 4/4/4 split for +20k average.

And would they show up at 6pm so that it's on at 8pm here on the East Coast?

We've had 80K to the MCG for Origin games.

With some good marketing+interstate tourists+local hype around the Pirates you'd like to think it'd sell out

It's Perthicans btw

Even if only 55,000 showed up. That would be a huge result for the game given the population and lack of promotion the game has had for many years over there. Obviously this is changing now due to the WC pirates bid and the ARLC's growing of the game in all states.

The weds night would be an issue but I'd be confident it would go close to selling out. Perth people love a hyped event.

The mines would pretty much empty for a SoO match in Perth. You'd also get a truckload of expats from South East Asia flying in.

Perthese?

I thought they just fell under the general 'Sandgroper' definition of Western Australians, kind of like how no one from Brisbane would call themselves anything but a 'Queenslander'. Novacastrians, Sydneysiders, Canberrans and Melbournians are about the only people in Australia with a strong city based identity.

There are an estimated 4 million people from NSW (and most of the population of NZ) in Sydney, but Stadium Australia doesn't always sell out.

So what? If you are making comparisons - look at Melbourne. Dockland sells out with Origin. Maybe a lot of travellers from NSW and QLD, which will still happen in Perth. You would expect Perth to have more locals going due to a higher number of expat kiwis, NSWelshman and Qlders.

Why do people still carry on about the number of supporters turning up at grounds being so important? I thought it was pretty clear it is all about TV ratings these days, not how many go to the footy.

Anyway, I reckon a Perth side would rate well and a second Brisbane side is a no Brainer for the same reason.
