Future NRL Stadiums

That's not a fair comparison. It's like saying the SCG is shared by cricket and AFL, or the SFS by league, union and soccer.

I'm talking about sports that require completely different playing fields.

don't know what to make of Smith's stadium policy now, seems to be an each way bet.

right stadium right game.

if its your avg NRL game, play it in a 30-40k capacity one. if its a massive derby play it at a 60k and if its SOO/GF or whatever then 80k ANZ.

Agree, need to be more flexible with the NRL can't just use the 2 stadiums as the AFL do for a whole lot of reasons. My hope... New SFS 65,000, ANZ rectangular 80K + Parra to be 35K. I can't see Manly, Cronulla or Penrith surviving in those stadiums, I hope they can retain their boutique grounds. If Manly redevelopment plans come through, Brookie will be 23K nearly all seats under cover. Will be very nice, I hope Cronulla can piggy back off the development and at least extend the grandstands to get more reserved seating. Never been to Penrith but looking on photos and with their demand I think can be spoon fed upgrades in time. I see the Wests Tigers one day just using ANZ/Cambelltown.

But hasn't this funding been brought about because gov don't want to keep paying to maintain all these suburban grounds?

All the talk has been around a funding split between SFS, ANZ & Parramatta. Add a couple more suburban grounds to the list and the $600m suddenly doesn't go very far.

The ANZ, SFS, Parra upgrades all work. Brookie was due for a funding upgrade by Uncle Tones but haven't heard anything, what that funding is and what is required to make it a boutique ground, I'm not sure but it's needed, Penrith is the other stadium that needs an upgrade.
Leichhardt with 3-4 games a year won't cut it, same goes with Kogarah. WIN at the Gong and Campbelltown you could argue either way and Sharks, well they own that ground so I doubt they can be pushed out of their stadium but also doubt State or Feds would kick in big money to upgrade it.

Sydney pretty much needs around 5 stadiums +/- Campbelltown and maybe Shark Park

Best case scenario would see
SFS main nrl stadium (souths, st's, roosters)
Anz only for finals
Parra redeveloped or new 35k stadium for the west teams. (Bulldogs, eels, Tigers)
Manly redeveloped modern 20k
Cronulla redeveloped modern 20k
Panthers redeveloped 20k

Unfortunately that is going to take decades or a lot more than $600mill

With only 1 team playing out of these, i just cant imagine them getting money without a private investor (which is unlikely given the locations are at the edge of the city).

Obviously, the Sharks have this to a degree, but there arent even solid plans for that yet.

The Canberra Raiders are poised to move their training base to Civic to embrace the City to the Lake project, keen to capitalise on the ACT government's vision to revitalise the city in the coming years.
But Raiders chief executive Don Furner says the plans are contingent on securing the finances required to shift from Bruce to Northbourne Oval and assurances from the government that a new state of the art stadium will be built.
The Raiders begin their NRL season on Sunday when they play the Cronulla Sharks and are hoping to turn around their on-field fortunes under coach Ricky Stuart after recent lean years.
The club is also working towards a training base overhaul, considering plans for a new facility which would be built adjacent to the club's $80 million redevelopment project in Braddon.

"We're looking at it down the track, we're talking 2017, we'd like to move back into Braddon," Furner said.
"What we built out there in Bruce was supposed to be built in Braddon. We own Northbourne Oval, so ultimately it would be good to be back there because we own the land. At Bruce we're on a licence agreement and it's owned by CIT.
"If we needed new lights or a new ground or sprinklers ... it's not our asset. There are two different leases at Braddon ... if the [redevelopment] gets going hopefully we'll have the funds to develop a new training facility."
Stuart will finalise his squad on Tuesday for the NRL season opener, with lock Shaun Fensom the only serious injury concern after injuring his hamstring at training.
Fensom had a knee reconstruction last year, but a training mishap has put him in doubt for round one. He has had an injection in an attempt to speed up his recovery and will have scans on Monday to see if he will be fit in time to play the Sharks.
Stuart hopes renewed competition in the squad will push the Green Machine to greater heights this year, adding recruits Josh Hodgson, Frank-Paul Nu'uausala and Sia Soliola while representative prop David Shillington is also fit again.
Mitch Cornish is favoured to get the first chance in the No.7 jersey, but Stuart will wait until later in the week before deciding on a line-up.
The Raiders' potential move into the city will not happen until at least 2017 as they weigh up their future and keep a close eye on the government's plans to give Civic a makeover.
Plans for a new $350 million rectangular stadium with a roof have been put on hold while the government foots the bill for the Mr Fluffy asbestos clean-up.
ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr is hopeful the stadium will be built between 2020 and 2025.
The ACT Brumbies have moved into a new $16 million training facility at the University of Canberra, but the Raiders are prepared to break away from the sporting hub near the university and the AIS to be a part of a redesigned city landscape.
"Historically we should have been in Braddon. It might not be until 2018 before anything happens, I don't know," Furner said.
"But if a new stadium comes in, it would be great to be around the corner from it. The city will be vibrant ... the reliance on Canberra Stadium and the AIS won't be as much and we've got our own in-house doctors and physios now.
"There's a long way to go, planning and finances have to come into it. We need the money first to make it happen."
The Raiders will meet with government and Canberra Stadium officials in the coming week to build plans for greater fan engagement at home games in an attempt to lure crowds back to NRL matches.

The NRL is proudly boasting their 50 million dollar annual profits. Governments won't contribute to these pipedreams until the NRL puts in real money as well.

Money is always available, Bulldogs managed to get $7 million or so from Canterbury Council just to create a training and admin base for the club. This will obviously cost more, but if Manly can put up some cash through their owners and there can be access and use by the whole community then it is always a possibility.

As an aside, the article mentions restaurant-quality food. Do people actually want restaurant-quality food at the footy? I would be happier if they lowered the prices of pies, chips and drinks to something closer to what you would normally pay, instead of double

Parra need a 40 thousand that should be shared with a few other teams for any big derbies.
They have soccer as well who can use this new stadium, along with derbies such as with Panthers, Tigers, even the Dogs.

SFS needs fixing, and the white elephant needs to be turned into a proper rectangle ground. No more of our code trying to squeeze our code into a round field, it is killing our atmospheres.

Dave Smith talks about atmosphere, well build us some decent rectangle grounds you pillack.

Manly have got to build no smaller than a 27 thousand ground. It should be 30 thousand.

Cronulla dont need anything yet. They cant even fill the cheap seats, so dont waste funds on them until 2020.
Apart from that, only Townsville need a new stadium, and they have been promised one.

The Warriors need to get some assistance as well. The government in NZ is trying to screw them over and get them to play outta Eden Park so they help pay off unions faking bills.

Dave smith has got to make sure we are not funding union in NZ. They are sneaky fakers.

They will. That's partly what they're putting the money away for, to be able to make co-contributions in proposed projects like this and others.
