Future NRL Stadiums

however, i thought there were strict rules of what could be built around the lake given the national capital authorities continued push to keep things "within the vision of burley griffin"or whoever decides on that.
there was a stink over building in the parlimentary triangle over something a few years ago.

what a crock that vision was too. All he did was copy bits of Washington's roads and slap them together based on Canberra's geography.

None of the buildings were his. And what better place to put a national stadium (this is the time to build an eye catcher) than on the shore of the Lake?

There is little to no room for the area of civic they are talking about. I'd like to see a plan be it doesn't sound plausible.

It's a fine club stadium... But I think only about 4 of 26 thousand seats are undercover?

Building a roof over the other 22 would cost almost as much as a new stadium. Building it near civic would be a massive improvement.

Have to be careful though... The last time the ACT sports minister brought this up he wanted it to be multipurpose. I would rather play out of Bruce until it collapses than at an ovtangular stadium.

I'd be much more confident about this if it weren't Andrew Barr.

For those not in the know, the ACT government gives grants to the sporting teams that play here. Under his watch, they are giving GWS more than double per game what they are giving the Raiders and Brumbies.

He's an absolute disgrace, preferring to support an out of town team more than those that give back to the ACT economy.

Where in the Civic area would be possible?

North Oval? League Park?

well they indicated by the lake...

league Park..f**k no. its surronded by housing on 3 sides of that block and canberra centre
would be too tight space wise IMO.

it would need to have alot of under ground parking.

i doubt the ANU would give up the grounds that they have...
and if you are taling about the ground on Barry Drive..possibly. would yake alot of work. again parking in the outlying area would be an issue.

if the ACT government bought that whole block...as in that and the crappy wasted space at the back (has some athletics equimpment...crap grass and pine trees. i run past there on my lunchbreak come times. then there is the space . but like i said the ANU wouldnt sell it cheap.

yep. he's a useless merkin.

no doubt GWS would wanna be involved. they can play at manuka. f**k orff from this.

its a disgrace how much AFL pole they smoke for 4 games a year (one of which is a pre season)

its like they forget they have 2 teams who have won their respective titles playing in town. but wooo GWS lube me up lets go says the ACT.

IMO this is what they need to do. Get the FFA ARU and NRL involved in a joint stadium with the ACT government. Say to the FFA put a team in canberra once its built (we should have got one last go round)..they fund a bit. gives them a Fifa approved world cup option if by some fluke there was a revote on 2022..NRL assures its long term facility in the nations capital. adds an extra venue for things like Finals, Kangaroos games or maybe even SOO (pipe dream i know)
Rugby Union gets a new facility for the brumbies in a strong Rugby city....another venue for future world cups and test matches.

its gotta be a joint effort against the AFL to get it to be rectangular, 40k and under a roof.

They will make it multipurpose because of the 4 games GWS will play at canberra :sarcasm: The AFL will make sure to turn any new proposed studiums into an oval/multipurpose until Rugby league, Rugby and FFA stand up to them

Mr Barr also confirmed that the idea of a single, multi-purpose stadium to fulfil all of the capital's top-flight sporting needs had been abandoned after being deemed too costly.

The refurbishment of Manuka Oval had assumed priority in the short term, Mr Barr said, so Canberra could have a ground good enough to host elite Australian Football League and cricket matches.

''The issue of one or two stadia has been resolved, it's just not cost-effective to have just one that would accommodate every user group.

''The moveable seating, all the rest mean that it doesn't end up being a cost-effective model for the size of stadium that we're talking about.''

NRL needs to get on this early and refuse to allow NRL regular games to be played at oval grounds, Get ARU on board as well and scupper the AFL before it begins!

One of the rare occasions when we're on the same side.

Oddly, I think that it could be cricket that f**ks us. CA has indicated that if this summers BBL is a success, they will expand. And that only venues with lights will be considered. If that comes up, you can bet your bottom dollar this new venue will be ovtangular in order to accomodate all 4 sports.

Thing is the cost of building a multi use stadium is massive. If your aiming at 60K+ then it is worth it, if it is 30k then the costs of having moving stands, pitches that can cope with it etc are cost prohibitive.

driving home yesterday .. I just don't know where they'd put a Stadium on that Southern Shore of Burley Griffen next to the CBD
theres just no room to accomodate it effectively with all the current roads accessing it .. Parking etc

unless they reclaim some land from the lake ... its shallow near the shore so wouldn't be a massive undertaking

Acton would be the spot.

Edit**... that would of course be the Northern Shore if it were next to the CBD

^ The lake is completely shallow. Its only a couple of metres deep at its deepest. Wouldn't take much effort to fill it in.

Oh no, but there goes Burley Griffins dreams!!!

why they cant put lights at manuka?

FFS its already there and a fine cricket ground and would fill to capacity for big bash games if we were to get a team.

that covers AFL aswell.

I think NY City has a floating playing field on a quay. Don't think it is a stadium with stands etc, but hey, if they can build 'the world' over in Dubai.....
