Behold the new Perth Oval

EXCLUSIVE: Here’s what Perth Oval AKA nib Stadium will look like when the WA Government gives it a long-awaited overhaul to drag it into the 21st Century.
Department of Sport and Recreation plans seen by oneperth.com.au depict new grandstands for the east, north and south of the ground.
The plans are yet to be assessed for development approval but are likely to be rubber stamped by the City of Vincent which recently agreed to lease the ground to the government.
The new eastern stand (pictured above, right) will replace the existing 6940-patron scaffold stand, and house 9975 patrons under cover. Included in the 9975 seats will be 420 open air corporate ones.
Under the $82.5 million overhaul, stadium capacity will decrease from the existing 21,254 to 20,441. However, most patrons will be housed in plusher surroundings than before.
The existing western stand will stay largely as is – with the same capacity and no plans to add to its existing 242 open air corporate seats.
A new southern stand to replace the existing, temporary one will remain roofless for now.
However, provision has been made to erect a cover and link it to the eastern stand at a later project stage when the stadium’s ultimate capacity of 25,000 would be reached.
To the north of the ground, the current 3591 standing spaces in the lower bowl will make way for 2097 self-tipping, plastic seats.
New light towers, video scoreboards and a replacement pitch with subsurface drainage will also be part of the revamp.
Behind the eastern stand, a long row of food, beverage and toilet ‘pods’ will house catering services and provide for any resulting gastric reaction.

Looks good but can can anyone tell me about this.

When I watch NFL or Premier League, a lot of the stadiums (most I would say) that are purpose built tend to be much taller and straighter (Like Lang Park). Is this not done in Australia due to costs?

It looks like a far better viewing experience, as if you're up the back you at least get the looking over the action feel. Also the noise seems to stay in the stadium much better.

Hindmarsh Stadium or the New (but broken) grandstand at WIN have or will have a better viewing experience than any ground ive been to in either league. Marathon and the top tier of the SFS are not far behind

A 20K capacity should be alright in the short term and it's similar to what a lot of other NRL clubs are playing out of.

The question is though when will this be completed and when will the eventual upgrade to 25K capacity be complete?

Thats very craptacular for $83M. Eastern stand looks like WIN Stadium's new grandstand (which cost something like $30M from memory before the roof broke).

May as well move to a new site like the powerstation site and build one good grandstand like Newcastle's Western Grandstand and use a hill on the other 3 sides until another $83M is available.

As is, that nib plan is dreadful.

It's a compromise situation which isn't ideal but a damn site better than we have. The clubs wanted a corporate West stand building, the Govt wanted a vote winning all fans East stand building. We've ended up with a hybrid massive East stand that serves both. It is more akin to Newcastles new stand than St's. It isn;t a very accurate article as the $82.5 was upped to $91.5mill recently and the diagrams they are showing are from the old planning document that isn't accurate anymore in terms of the size and design of the new East stand.

Personally I'd build this new stand and sort out the other key issues like pitch drainage and big screen (that is what the $90mill will be spent on). Then I would extend the Shed to create a massive standing terrace with a big roof over the whole end, would create a great atmosphere, allow for cheap tickets and add significantly to capacity for not much expenditure. Then move onto a new West stand, all under cover seating costing around $50mill and finally the Sth end replaced with a permenant roofed family all seating stand with suitable amenities families expect these days. Would get it up to 25k+ for around a total of $200mill total spend.

The eventual downsizing will only occur as the stands are being developed and knowing our Govt that may be a while! The East stand development starts this year and will be finished for 2013. This will actually create an increased capacity over what we have now and take it up to 24,300 by the time we enter the NRl in 2014/15.

It is only if and when the Shed end gets developed that we will see a decrease. I can see fans kicking up a stink as the Shed makes nib unique and fans love being in there creating a great atmosphere (esepcially the Glory fans).

Don't get me wrong, its on par with a few Sydney grounds like Parramatta. Its just for a city like Perth with 2, soon to be 3 professional teams needing a football stadium, its not a very aspirational project.

And now that I think about it, the reason the West GS looks like WIN is because it probably costs a similar amount - around $30M for the stand and another $10M for the amenities "pods".

Going off other stadium projects in the past, replacing the seats and putting in light towers usually cost around $12-15M. Refurbishment of the old main GS probably costs around $6-8M. Scoreboard another $1-2M. Another $6-8M for all the perimeter fencing, gates and ticket facilities. Then $15M or so for the south stand.... and thats the $83M spent.

I just think it could have been a lot better. Kind of strange how the stadium is squashed up on the western side of the block too. I know the old stand is heritage listed, but they should just level it. Far better and more historic grounds have been levelled in the past.

It will make a fine club venue.

When (if) the new Stadium WA is built, it could be used for finals and the like.

Goddo that image isn;t accurate. That stand isn;t showing the corporate facilities that are being icorporated into teh East stand inc , 56 boxes, BBQ areafor 250 and two 300 person function rooms. Add them in and as you can imagine that stand is going to be much bigger and different looking! Also the actual spend is $95.1mill according to this so that article is generally not very accurate at all! I do agree though they should have bitten the bullet and built a brand new 30K stadium at Burswood.

The capacity going down is a worry.

At the risk of sounding pedantic, this thread should be renamed to correctly read, "Future NRL Stadia".

The capacity going down is a worry.

It's would only be temp lowered and then by just a thousand or so, eventually the capacity when finished will be 25k all seater. I still say expand the Shed end and you could have 28k with 22k seats and 6k terrace standing.

We should move at least one of our games to the Forsyth Barr Stadium. Give the Warriors fans in Dunedin and the South Island a treat. It is a brand new stadium and it would attract a lot of fans with it's transparent roof.

I heard this stadium was in talks with a few NRL clubs about the possibility of taking a game there.
