Widdop once again a huge loss directs the team well around the park they will really miss him. The players hats off to they played some great footy against the Broncos. I honestly think that performance will be hard to replicate and probably taken alot out of them the victory at Brisbane recovery and freshning up will be important heading into next week.

Great, so you're not going to stop supporting them until the coach is no longer around as you said earlier today?
Stop f**king around with all the small talk etc and let's cut to the chase.
How did Lomax go today and have you changed your opinion in anyway as to his value or potential?
Should he get a start next week or does Aitken tick the box for you?

The slide for the last part of the season was well and truly worth it. Knocking out a red hot broncos in an elimination finals in front of 50,000 at Suncorp, all the while being Ben Hunt's first match against them there

Best victory since the grand final

Yep I have thrown up plenty of negatives on the side recently and deserved and hope today was my saviour. Well praise and positves where due to even Mary and all the squad.
Well they have done me proud today as a club and team and showed what we have been looking for for some time. Widdop gone (big loss) and Mann to replace him i have just as much hope against the Wabbits. That should be the only change i hope and I have some confidence. Sorry Euan and Flo..you can support from the sidelines. I thought Dufty, Lomax and even (Mcdonald except 2 bad errors) did well. Hunt stepped up in the 2nd half as he should as was quiet the 1st half. All the forwards even Lawrie excelled today. While there is life..........

Great work, mate. Look forward to seeing some good, positive contributions from you on here. Go the saints!

I must admit that I may have been a touch sceptical about our chances today, but I can now reveal that it was all mind games to fire the team up, and didn't it work a treat?

So while I was wrong, I was also somehow right, it's an enigma for sure.

Not funny. Be serious about being positive to our team, thanks champ.

Are you angry because we won today, fake fan? I mentioned earlier, he is slow but today was good in defence and has good footwork. I liked his kick at the end too. He stays IMO.

Your pomposity knows no boundaries does it?
You couldn't give it to the kid enough last week despite a very good first full game, even to the point you were basically saying he would never make it and Aitken should be rushed back in.
Now you have a crack at other people who may have changed their positions on issues and to top it off start the fake fan rhetoric.
You turn up late August professing to be all things St George, well where have you been all this time oh number 1 supporter?

Champion, I was geeing you and everyone else up last week. You and the other remnants of the circle jerk group on here are quick to judge many of our coaching staff/management/players on minimal fact or evidence, so I thought I'd give you the same shit. How'd it taste?

Sorry to break your heart kiddo, but lomax was much better today than last week. Without looking at the stats I'd even take a guess and say he busted more than 0 tackles this game.

St George Illawarra claim surprise NRL finals victory at Suncorp Stadium
AFL
From the moment James Graham charged out of the defensive line to flatten Josh McGuire in the opening set of the match, it was clear the Dragons of old had arrived at Suncorp Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

What followed was a barnstorming first half performance that left the Broncos players and more than 47,000 fans in attendance at Suncorp Stadium in shock.

Graham may have left the field with a concussion in the 24th minute, but it didn't stop the remainder of the Dragons forwards imposing their will on the game.

The team’s early season success was built on the back of their dominant forward pack and it was much the same on Sunday, with Tyson Frizell and Tariq Sims leading the side from a 10-2 deficit to a 28-10 half-time lead.

Sims broke the game open with a first-half hat-trick, the third try coming after he shrugged off younger brother Korbyn in the 37th minute.

Dragons coach Paul McGregor praised his forwards for outplaying a highly touted Brisbane pack in what he described as an outstanding victory.

“You’re coming up against a side like Brisbane where they’ve got some highly talented, powerful backrowers,” McGregor said. “They’re the talk of the town, everyone’s talking about them playing representative footy at the highest level.

“I’ve got my backrow that I think is as good as any, so it was their task today. You go Tyson, then you go Tariq and Jack De Belin, I wouldn’t swap those three.”

The Dragons opened the scoring in the second half through Tim Lafai, but then, much like they did during the regular season, the wobbles emerged.

Suddenly a 24-point lead had shrunk to 16 and after Jack De Belin and Gareth Widdop left the field with ankle and shoulder injuries respectively, the visitors looked to be on shaky footing with 22 minutes still to play.

Up stepped the most maligned player in rugby league, Ben Hunt.

With his halves partner off the field, it was up to Hunt to steady the ship and that he did.

Hunt's kicking game helped pin the Broncos back in their own half and when Brisbane made errors working the ball out, the Dragons were good enough to close out the game in the final 15 minutes.

Tries to Luciano Leilua and Matt Dufty eliminated any hope of a comeback, with Dufty crossing in the final play of the match to secure a comprehensive 48-18 victory.

With just one player left on the bench, McGregor was pleased with the way his side fought to regain the momentum midway through the second half.

“It was 34-18 and we were down to one interchange, which I thought could really hurt us, but the boys showed a lot of really good character and pushed through when they were under fatigue. To manage to come out the other side of that momentum and put some points on was great.”

The Dragons will be left to count the cost of the win, however, with Widdop re-injuring the shoulder he dislocated in the round 22 loss to the Eels and De Belin re-injuring the ankle that had him in serious doubt of missing Sunday’s match.

While not too concerned about De Belin’s injury, McGregor revealed Widdop’s shoulder dislocation will force him to miss next Saturday’s clash with the Rabbitohs.

Player ratings for St George Illawarra and Brisbane Broncos following their finals meeting at Suncorp Stadium on Sunday.

Brisbane Broncos

1. Darius Boyd: Brisbane's lack of ball in the first half meant Boyd was left out in the cold. Showed his class in the 52nd minute to slice through and give his side an outside chance of a comeback. 6/10

2. Corey Oates: Saw very little of the ball in the first 40 minutes. Finished with 10 runs for 94 metres. Made a couple of bad errors. 4.5

3. James Roberts: Was pushed off by Tim Lafai early in the second half in a game where he had limited chance to impact the game with the ball in hand. Finally found open space in the second half but it was too late. 6

4. Jordan Kahu: Rarely seen in the first stanza and did not improve in the second, finishing with only six runs for the match. 4

5. Jamayne Isaako: Try-saving effort in defence in the first three minutes and showed no signs of nerves in his first finals game. Fell away in the second half matching his team's fortunes. 6

Fifita scores Brisbane's first try

6. Anthony Milford: Solid kicking game early but failed to spark his side with their season on the line. 5

7. Kodi Nikorima: A line-break in the 17th minute allowed him to set up the first try of the game with a sensational solo effort midway through the second stanza. 6

15. Joe Ofahengaue: Left the field for a HIA in the sixth min after a heavy tackle with tackle Jack De Belin and did not return. 3

9. Andrew McCullough: Lost a ball in a tackle coming out of his own half which led to the Dragons scoring their first try. A team-high 37 tackles. 6.5

10. Sam Thaiday: Not the way he wanted to end his NRL career, with 12 runs for 108 metres. 6

17. David Fifita: was busy on the right edge early and backed up well to score off a Kodi Nikorima break. Was arguably Brisbane's best forward before an ankle injury saw him hobble off in the 57th minute. 7.5

12. Tevita Pangai jnr: Quiet by his standards through the first hour of the game and overall failed to bend the line. 5.5

13. Josh McGuire: Was vital in the middle of the field to help steer the younger Broncos forwards around with his dependable high work-rate seeing him make 36 tackles. Was less impactful in his second stint. 6

Interchange:

8. Matt Lodge: A fiery finish from the big prop. Never stopped trying but was outpointed by the Dragons front-rowers. 5

14. Patrick Mago: Provided excellent energy late in the game off the bench in only 13 minutes. 4.5

16. Korbin Sims: Ill-disciplined early with three penalties putting Brisbane under pressure. Poor defence on his line as he missed a tackle leading to his brother Tariq's third try. 3

18. Kotoni Staggs: Limited minutes late in the game when the result was already all but decided. 5

Lafai gets another Dragons try

St George Illawarra Dragons

1. Matt Dufty: Had limited opportunities to show off his speed in open space but was solid with his tidying up work at the back. 7/10

2. Nene Macdonald: Made 108m from nine powerful carries. Got his hands on the ball in the second half when his forwards needed a breather. 7

3. Zac Lomax: Composed performance from the teenager. Some nice footwork in attack and kept the Broncos speed men in check. 7

4. Tim Lafai: Stood up big time with one of his best games of the season. Made 67m in the first half and then ran over James Roberts to score a crucial try early in the second half. Always dangerous with ball in hand. 8

5. Jordan Pereira: Fairly quiet in the first half but made some strong carries in the second term and produced a huge run to get his team out of trouble with the Broncos pressing in the 64th minute. 6

6. Gareth Widdop: The captain's return brought composure to the Dragons and he took control to set up a huge lead. That was until he left the field with a shoulder injury in the 57th minute. 6

7. Ben Hunt: Sent his first kick long and looked nervous, but settled into the game nicely and took control with his kicking game when Widdop left the field. Nailed a 40-20 late in the match as his confidence surged. 8

8. James Graham: Set the tone early with a huge hit on Josh McGuire but was knocked out in the 25th minute trying to tackle Korbin Sims head on and did not return. 3

9. Cameron McInnes: Got through plenty of work in defence (36 tackles) and kept the middle tight for the Dragons. 6

10. Leeson Ah Mau: A powerhouse effort to nullify Brisbane's much-vaunted pack. Set the tone with a superb first stint and grabbed his second try for the season in the 28th minute. Finished with 147m from 14 hit ups and 27 tackles. 9

11. Tyson Frizell: Another Origin forward who stood tall when his team needed him most. Recovered from early mistake to churn out 132m and made a mark in defence with 21 tackles. 8

Sims double extends the Dragons lead

12. Tariq Sims: A stunning performance from the Origin back-rower as he terrorised the Broncos' right edge to grab three tries in the first half. Ran straight over brother Korbin for his third try and celebrated like he'd just won a grand final. Will now take aim at the Burgess brothers. 9

13. Jack de Belin: Came in under an injury cloud and looked proppy early. A bad missed tackle on Kodi Nikorima led to Brisbane's first try but he ripped in to his defensive work and ran strongly before limping off in the 52nd minute. 5

14. Jeremy Latimore: Entered the match when James Graham was knocked out and showed all his experience to make a solid contribution in attack and defence. Got through 13 hit ups for 114m. 7

15. Kurt Mann: Came into the game late but didn't put a foot wrong. 5

16. Blake Lawrie: Best game of his career as he churned out 129m from 12 runs in 39 minutes of game time. Huge impact off the bench. 7

17. Luciano Leilua: Grabbed a try late in the game and showed again why he's an X-Factor for the Red V. 5

Report, Video | St George Illawarra Dragons keep season alive with courageous 48-18 elimination finals win over Brisbane Broncos
  • Local Sport

Unstoppable: Tariq Sims scored a first half hat-trick. Picture: AAP

  • St George Illawarra have scored one of the gutsiest wins in the club’s history to keep their season alive with a 48-18 win over Brisbane on Sunday.

The Dragons traveled to Suncorp Stadium with their season on the line. It appeared Mission: Impossible. St George Illawarra, who led the competition up until nine weeks ago, had suffered a deflating end of season slump to finish seventh.

They had been hammered from all angles over the last month. Experts. Pundits. Some of their own fans.

The Broncos, meanwhile, were touted as the form team of the competition. The team who could challenge the top four for the title. On their home patch, in front of a big crowd. The Dragons were supposed to be a speed bump for Brisbane on their way to week two of the finals.

St George Illawarra had to do it the hardest of ways. They lost James Graham to a failed head injury assessment during the first half. They lost Jack de Belin to an ankle injury in the second half.

And, in what appeared was going to be a fatal blow, then lost captain Gareth Widdop to a dislocated shoulder in his comeback from the same injury.

But the red V refused to quit. They almost blew the Broncos away in the second half of the first period. They then weathered the storm when everything was going against them.

They will now face another elimination semi-final against South Sydney. Who would write them off now?

Sims hits, spins, and then slams it down!#NRLBroncosDragons#NRLFinals#NRLpic.twitter.com/U2nnx1ZX3S

    — NRL (@NRL) September 9, 2018
The Dragons opened the scoring through a Widdop penalty goal before a sickening head clash between de Belin and Joe Ofahengaue. The Broncos prop left the field for a head injury assessment which he failed and did not return.

A pair of Jamayne Isaako penalty goals gave Brisbane the lead before the Broncos appeared to blow the game open.

A poor read in defence from Tim Lafai and de Belin allowed Kodi Nikorima to burst through a yawning gap untouched 20 metres out from his own line. The halfback raced down field before drawing Matt Dufty and finding David Fifita, with the young back-rower celebrating his first finals appearance with a try under the posts.

The more pessimistic Dragons fan might have worried the flood gates were about to open. But St George Illawarra hit back against the run of play through a pair of huge plays from Sims.

    A first-half double for @tariq_sims!#NRLBroncosDragons#NRLFinals#NRLpic.twitter.com/mnLRLYarWJ

    — NRL (@NRL) September 9, 2018
Firstly, he rocked Broncos hooker Andrew McCullough to force an error with a tackle to gift the Dragons possession. Sims then benefited from a Ben Hunt shift to the left to beat Nikorima one on one to score.

Just when they had got themselves back in the game, if they were to go on and win they would have to do it the hard way after the Dragons lost Graham.

Broncos forward Korbin Sims charged with the ball close to the Dragons’ line with Graham appearing to be knocked senseless after wearing a forearm to the head. The Englishman failed his head injury assessment and was unable to return.

But if there was any doubt about the Dragons’ fighting qualities they answered them strongly.

Firstly Leeson Ah Mau barged over from close range for just his second try of the season just before the half hour mark.

    Tim Lafai from the scrum!#NRLBroncosDragons#NRLFinals#NRLpic.twitter.com/kQaoJsKeA5

    — NRL (@NRL) September 9, 2018
Korbin Sims then gave away a pair of silly penalties, the first for a clear two on one strip, the second for a lifting tackle on Blake Lawrie.

Sims wasn’t endearing himself to his future teammates and, if this game was the tale of two brothers, Tariq was to write his next chapter shortly after with his second try.

He then had the first hat-trick of his career just before half-time. This time Tariq isolated his brother on the goal line one on one and stormed his way over.

Another Widdop penalty goal gave the Dragons a 28-10 lead at half-time, meaning Brisbane would need to equal their biggest ever comeback to keep their season alive.

But it only took nine minutes of the second half for the Dragons extend their lead when Lafai isolated James Roberts in a simple scrum play to score after a dangerous run from Dufty.

Two quick tries for the @brisbanebroncos!

    Nikorima provides the spark.#NRLBroncosDragons 18-34 after 58 minutes.#NRLFinals#NRLpic.twitter.com/IytZOJqFuh

    — NRL (@NRL) September 9, 2018
St George Illawarra then had another set back, losing de Belin to a lower leg injury. The NSW representative had been in a moon boot earlier in the week. With Paul Vaughan already missing for the season, the Dragons will be hoping de Belin can prove his fitness for the clash with the Rabbitohs.

Twenty-four points down with 27 minutes to play, the Broncos needed an urgent response. Darius Boyd, who won the Clive Churchill Medal with the Dragons the last time St George Illawarra won a finals match, provided it. The fullback sliced through to score from close range.

The Dragons then endured what appeared their fatal blow. A Roberts break gave the Broncos field position before Nikorima scored from a scrum. But Widdop fell awkwardly attempting to tackle the halfback, appearing to dislocate his shoulder again on his return from the same injury.

With the Dragons now without Widdop, Graham and de Belin and the Broncos missing Ofahengaue, the match started to look like a casualty ward when Brisbane lost Fifita to an ankle injury.

With a huge home crowd behind them the Broncos pushed and pushed. Their season on the line, they threw everything they had at the Dragons.

But St George Illawarra refused to yield. They finally sealed the result when Luciano Leilua touched down from a deft Cameron McInnes grubber kick close to the line.

Luciano Leilua collects the McInnes kick!#NRLBroncosDragons#NRLFinals#NRLpic.twitter.com/9NftMZ4M80

    — NRL (@NRL) September 9, 2018
And they weren’t done. A Hunt 40-20 added gloss. A long-range Dufty try kicked off the celebrations.

The experts have written them off for weeks.

    Can you hear them now?

No. The Dragons are still breathing fire.

    Leader Scoreboard

St George Illawarra Dragons 48 (Tariq Sims three, Leeson Ah Mau, Tim Lafai, Luciano Leilua, Matt Dufty tries. Gareth Widdop seven, Zac Lomax three goals)

    defeated

Brisbane Broncos 18 (David Fifita, Darius Boyd, Kodi Nikorima tries. Jamayne Isaako three goals)

    at Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane

Leader man of the match: Tariq Sims (Dragons)

Dragons’ next game: South Sydney, elimination semi-final, ANZ Stadium, Saturday.
