Players don't go for legs now. They're yelled at by coaches when they do bar players on an edge. They're taught to get for the hips and drive them back if you go low. If they go for the legs players just easily offload.

Who will you stop these days going for the legs? So solves 2 problems. Less offloads and a slower play the ball

I agree that they are not taught to go low but I don’t think it is about the offload, but more about the way the game is reffed. A good legs tackle and it is hard to offload, but they hit the ground fast and the refs yell at you to get off straight away. Can’t slow the play the ball down.

I would like to see the legs tackle rewarded as ‘dominant’ for a while to see if that would have a positive impact on tackling technique and concussions.

You go low. More chance you get KO.

Take someone like Kikau. A beast of a human. Legs pumping you run the risk of knee to the head. Head hitting the hip. Simply being too strong to put him down

NRL physio did the numbers and players get HIA more trying to tackle low apparently

Yeah basically this.

Wade Graham has HIA issues. Self inflicted and often only him in a tackle.

We see very few dog shots now. Often is just timing or luck is off. It is good when those accidents happen that steps are being tak

This is more detail about what I share yesterday.

It's not the end of league as we know it, but a sensible way forward.

Yeah basically this.

The NRL needs to get some common sense. There is no way Trindall should of been binned than suspended for the hit on Jenkins

More players get hurt going legs now.

No islanders back then nor Full time in gyms meant players could. Players are too powerful these days
I don't think people realise how strong players are. Paul Gallen could deadlift 240kg and he is not a big man compared to many. Think about that. That means he could pick two 120kg players straight up off the floor. He could pick up two Mark Geyers and still have room for a suitcase full of luggage. I believe there are many players who can squat 200kg plus.

They are incredibly strong now and that is why tackling has changed so much. A football legend like the late Johnny Raper would be broken in two nowadays .Raper's playing weight was about 65kgs and obviously he would benefit from modern training methods, but at that weight he would be smashed. Paul gallen could dip him in cotton wool and use him to floss his teeth.

Please, pardon my ignorance, what does "dead lift" and "squat", as in weights mean?

a dead lift (as I understand it, please correct me if I am wrong) if lifting the bar from the ground to above your head. I think you can get the weight to your chest and in a 2nd effort raise the weight about your head.

a squat lift is where the person get's down in a squatting position position before lifting the weight, and then bringing it above their head.

Deadlift - you pick the bar off the floor up to waist height. Squat, the bar is on your shoulders and you squat down and stand up again.

There is no lifting of the weight above the head. The power comes from the legs, back and core in both lifts. Lifting 240kg off the floor is no mean feat.

Mate spot on. Most nrl players would squat 150kgs plus. The elite would squat 200 plus. Almost all nrl players would deadlift 200 plus.. big forwards like marty tipua and kiks etc would deadlift close to 300kgs. In a past life i could deadlift over 200kgs and i was definitley not a pro sportsman. These guys train 8hrs a day 5 days a week..

All players would bench huge numbers. And theyd all run 13 or so plus on the beep test or yo-yo. Players these days are elite. Dylan and co would run 15 plus on the beep test, and under 11.5 sec 100s. They are all round elite specimens.

The injuries in the game are purely due to the fitness being 20x better and players being twice the size but triple the fitness.

Exactly. These guys are the top 1% physically.

Api got the vax. So no issues for interstate games now.

Good there'll be less disruption for the season.

Another crazy signing by the Warriors. Picked up Dylan Walker on a 3-year deal. Starting next year.
When I first read this I thought what an unusual signing by such an experienced recruitment manager in Peter O’Sullivan but I now see he is with the Dolphins. Great deal for Dylan, not so much for the Warriors.
