I appreciate Ivan Cleary doing his best to make a mockery of my initial opinion that he was a bog-average coach who would get us nowhere, but if someone could tell him we need to get to at least 6 in a row before I concede, that would be great.

To equal the Dragons we need to get rid of all the inter-state teams and the Warriors and reduce the competition to 10 teams and get rid of the salary cap. Then we can have Burton, Capewell, Crichton, Leniu, Korisau, Luai, Turuva, Kikau, Hopgood, Katoa and maybe Staines back (for depth).

I am so over this Dragons 11 year worship. It was the NSW Cup, a separate competition existed in QLD. It is very impressive for what it was at the time. But, and its a big but, they didn't even have to play a team from QLD. Cronulla and Penrith didn't exist. Imagine if they had to play the Broncos, the Storm and the Raiders? You know, those teams that produced multiple grand final winning teams featuring a lot of talent from QLD. St George know all about the Broncos.

The Cowboys, Raiders, Broncos, Cronulla, Penrith and the Storm have all won premierships since 1966. The Warriors have made two grand finals.

The worship of the Dragons goes a long way to explaining the SOO hate. QLD must feel it was like they didn't exist. St George weren't even the national premiers, they were NSW champions. Northern Suburbs won six QRL premierships in a row between 59 and 64. Why aren't they ever mentioned?

Enjoy...

To be fair there is really only one mouth breather in there, the rest of them know what's what. Still funny though.

I agree with the thrust of this, but you could come at it from the other direction. Guys like Langlands, Raper, Gasnier were that good while working day jobs. How good would they have been if they could focus on footy professionally, benefiting from modern medical practices and sports data science? Similarly, what would our team have done if they came together in the 50s? They probably would have won 11 straight or thereabouts. There wouldn't be much else they could do.

I don't think we can have answers and comparisons across that length of time with that many different variables are pretty meaningless. I do agree the whole "11 more than 4 so git on my lvl" stuff is silly and strongly agree there should be more of an integration of QLDs history in these conversions. Bottom line is both us and the 50s Dragons are atg teams that achieved something unbelievable. It makes for an incredible theoretical matchup too if you're inclined to daydream about stuff like that.

And who knows, maybe we'll get to 11 in this era and end the debate once and for all 😋

The dargons heyday was largely in the unlimited tackle days. So with no salary cap you just needed the best players and make sure you didn't let the ball go and just keep charging at the line...

I just clocked that Dean Whare has hung them up following this season. He’s a guy like Mansour that was an absolute shining light in a pretty grim period for the club. Shame he left just as the good times were starting. He’d be a monster in this side. One of the best classical centres we’ve seen in a while. Just made great decisions in defence and attack and put his winger in the right spot every time.

Whare was a gun. Injuries cruelled his career but at his peak he was terrific.
