Gillett sin bin

2 on field referees, 2 touch judges and 2 in the box

a guy gets sent from the field for being off side after he chases a bloke 40 metres down the field

I can't understand it, how do they possibly f**k that up.. are they all gutless to tell him he's wrong?

They probably did tell him, but he had already made the decision.

Just watching the replays, it's pretty funny seeing Mitch Rein actively arguing FOR the penalty and sin-binning.

Cummins proving time and time again why he has never been up to first grade standard

What would have the NRL done if the Broncos lost the game?

I can field this one for you, the NRL issues an appology and the referee officiates next week anyway. Then all opposition fans tell broncos fans that if they were good enough to win they would have.

lol you can't overturn a penalty nor a sin bin unless there was prior foul play he missed. Can't believe how many people don't know the rules.
So you're saying he would have been going against the rules if he'd overturned his original decision? Phew, I'm sure glad he didn't do that. What a gaffe that would have been.

That's only worse in their eyes because it involves Melbourne

The hysteria of a 10 year old child is to be expected with you.

Last nights call was atrocious, no-one will argue that point, but the worst call ever, nope.

Had that call cost you the game and a possible spot in the top 8 then fine. Just leave the hysteria at the door.

The way it may pan out neither of our teams may be good enough to play semi final football. I can live with that, obviously you can't.

Everyone makes mistakes. Making up new rules to try and rectify them isn't the right way to go about things.

Showing a bit of discretion and overruling a decision that everyone knew was clearly incorrect within 15 seconds of it being made would've only upset the biggest of pedants.

More controversy from the quick tap, sure the ref should have known the tackle count, but this obsession to speed the game up by introducing new rules instead of dealing with the real issue of wrestling is putting a lot of added pressure on refs to come up with big calls in split seconds.

lol no. you can't go around trying to fix your mistakes. If you get a penalty wrong, do you give the other team a penalty so it evens out?

Oh wow...

In what sense is calling Gillett back before he left the field equivalent to a square up penalty?

This should be good.

Because one a decision is made you can't over turn it. A penalty has never been over turned unless prior foul play and I'd bet a lot of money a sin bin as never been over turned.

We go on and on about how bad the refs are and how we need black and white rules. In this instance we do. But now the ref should over turn it if he realises his mistake within 15 seconds and the player hasn't left the field yet.

The ref f**ked up royally, he thought a tackle had been made when it wasn't. He apologised for his mistake and the broncos players were quite happy to blow it off post game. Introducing new rules that bring in even more grey area isn't the answer. Nor is being able to break the rules if you know you got one wrong.

You can't call him back. Then it really would be a farce. As it stands now, it was just a mistake. A bad mistake. No need to make it worse by making further errors.

Im sure incorrect penaltys have been overturned before....maybe non penalty decisions Im thinking.

We see tries awarded and overturned, and vice versa, by the VR....I know this is somewhat different but.....

This ''we cant change it because its in the rules so we just stick our heads in the sand" mentality is just like not being able to rule on a blatant forward pass.

Common sense will always prevail over looking like an utterly inept and amateur schemozzle

But no.....we cant change it....becuase the rules...you kno....

Penalties can't be overturned unless prior foul play the ref didn't know about.

Tries aren't awarded and over turned. That would never have happened in history (except in my u14b's grand final, almost cost us the game).

If it's such a big deal then change the rules, but deliberately ignoring rules because you made a mistake turns the game into a farce.

I hear what your saying but the thing is that sort of logic is all well and good in theory but when in practice it will completely ruin the game. If we allow the video referee to intervene on every bad decision then games will take 3-4 hours to play! Games are slow enough as it is without the video referee given even more licence to intervene. We see it in the game already with players staying down, time gets blown off, the video referee takes a look at it and a penalty is blown etc, all the while the game is stopped for a couple of minutes.

If you look at football in the 80s and 90s, referees probably got around probably 4-6 calls wrong a game, maybe even more on some occasions. However, the game flowed freely and the spectacle was much more appealing. What we have to accept is that referees are going to make errors; it happens in virtually any sport you can think of! The way the Australian sporting landscape is at the moment, rugby league football cannot afford to ruin the spectacle of rugby league by slowing the game down. In terms of attracting fans, Australian sport is more competitive than it has ever been before and the referees and their decisions cannot become the face of the game!
