he didnt sing mother

he did comfortably numb - which ended up being the only song off that concert used in gerneral release
as yes ...it was god awful.
I think he was actually reading the words as he went.

Wasn't cyndi lauper and thomas dolby involved somehow?

Bryan Adams did a good version of ''young lust'' from memory.

And for your inspiration, Mr Farenheit:

Billy Sheehan
Stu Hamm
John Entwistle
John Paul Jones
Steve Harris
Tom Hamilton
Geddy Lee
Bob Daisley
Duff (the only Gunner worth feeding IMHO)
Lemmy

Les Claypool
Jaco Pastorius
Cliff Burton etc etc

LOL we'll have a diff thread for it one day Loudstrat (btw from your list Sheehan, Entwistle and Geddy Lee are standouts IMO)

From the original list I can't go past Layne Staley as a personal fav, but I'll add:

James LaBrie
Sammy Hagar
Mikael Akerfeldt
Devin Townsend

For me, i can't go past Layne Staley either... nothing has impacted me more than AiC.

I love Akefeldt when he doesn't growl, like songs like Patterns in the Ivy II etc are awesome.

Oh, and i originally meant frontmen/women of bands... but if you guys want to talk about the likes of arethra franklin, then by all means go on...

Like Carch did with the guitarists i think there should be criteria... how about;

Skill
Emotion
Presence
Versatility
Lyrics

??? good/bad? any other suggestions?

Hmmm - I love his growl, sensational.

We agree on Layne atleast... + i think the harmony with Cantrell made it even more powerful... songs like 'Down in a Hole', 'Brother' etc.

Bassists: for being tasteful and fittin in would be Paco Palladino (or Entwhistle- he held them together)
for trying to shred probably Billy Sheehan
for being inovative maybe Victor Wooten
and I think Jaco would get the votes for being the face of the jazz bass.

And i love Geddy, but despise his voice.

I think the subject of vocalists is way too subjective to properly have a winner- there are some who undeniably had great ranges, but being a good vocalist is about so much more than pure technique. Most of my favourite singers are guys who are decidedly dodgy technically but who know how to emote and tell a story with their voices, for example Nick Cave, Allen Averill Nemtheanga, Tom Waits etc etc.

Got me wrong, with Chris Cornell guesting, is bloody good too

Check out 'Get Born Again' on Music Bank Disc 2, if you have it. It was Layne's 2nd last song (that he wrote) before he died :(. It has some spooky vocals too.

And i agree with what you said spacemonkey, but hey it doesn't hurt to have discussion :)

Tasteful and fitting in... i couldnt go past JPJ.
Trying to shred (and succeeding), sheehan for sure.
Innovation Jaco/Wooten, agreed.
Composition - Burton
Slap Bass - Claypool/Flea

however i think we need a bassists thread, because there's obviously enough interest.

Actually I'm gonna mention them because everybody else is probably too embarrassed to, but Eric Adams and Joey DiMaio of Manowar would both rate a metion in the best vocalist and best bassist categories, despite Manowar themselves being borderline comedy most of the time.

I can assure you that I have every AIC track ever recorded. :D

Get Born Again is superb, great track.

I've always loved Over Now and God Am as well as so many tracks on Jar of Flies.

Would.

Just too many good tracks to name really.

As for what spacemonkey said, it's why I love Layne. He is pretty decent technically anyway but it's the emotion that does it for me. So amazing.
