Freddy Mercury

Skill - 10
Emotion - 10
Stage Presence - 10
Versatility - 10
Lyrics - ??? Not sure what you mean by this. The vocalist isn't solely responsible for songwriting on most occasions, you'll need to clarify.

I know I said Robin Zander was probably my favourite, but the best has to be Freddy. Straight 10 out of 10's for me.

I realise this, but i mean more the way in which he/she delivers it - in relation with the rest of the song. I mean, sure others may write it, but the vox has to convey it in a particular way so it could have full meaning... however its not the strongest indicator, agreed.

Mercury was good, but i wouldnt say versatility 10...

'Tie Your Mother Down' is an awesome song - definitely in my top 3 favourite songs.

I know, kinda off-topic, but I couldn't help it!

definately agree with most of that last post, i think my 5 criteria from above is probably perfect for an assessment of vocalists. Ozzy should've rated a mention and Jagger ofcourse (and all those you mentioned.)

Where's Dee Schnieder from?

Twisted Sister. Saw 'em at the Hordern in their heyday, and wasn't expecting much. But he was an absolute workhorse - never stopped. At one stage he stopped the show because 2 chicks sat down up the back. He said "I've sprained my ankle, so if I can rage on, you can too". Played another half hour after than, never stopped, despite the ankle.

One more - and probably my favourite - Robin Zander
Yeah, great call!

Re Plant v Mercury - have to say more of Plant's work was accessible. Some of Queens stuff is just obscure.

Still reckon Dio has a better voice.

The general dislike for Plant will have some sort of effect on people's rating of him IMO.

fair enough, (to both you and Carch) i guess i hadn't heard about 1/4 of the stuff posted in that list. Stand corrected.

Cool man, just think for a second of songs like Princes of the Universe, Flash, Bicycle Race and then Crazy Little Thing Called Love, if you played those songs to somebody who'd never heard them before there's no way they could say that "Crazy" was sung by the same guy who sang the first 3 I mentioned.

Horses for courses.

''Lust for life'' or ''night clubbin'' done by anyone else but Iggy is shyte.
Lou Reed's ''perfect day'' and ''walk on the wild side'' is shyte when done by others...even Pav.

Those 2 blokes are hardly great singers...but have great voices.

Sebastian Bach anyone?

Has a pretty decent range and has nailed an Iron Maiden cover, not to many singers can do that.

how would you guys rate your nominees based on the above?

Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden)

Skill: 9 - Huge range and power, and he can do it whikle chrging around the stage like a madman, even at almost 50
Emotion: 7 - Maiden's style tends to the epic rather than the emotional, but Bruce still imbues everthing with plenty of feeling
Stage Prescence: 10 - one of THE great frontmen
Versatility: 5 - Maiden have genrally stuck to their formula, although he branched out more in his solo work
Lyrics: 7 - Always one of Maiden's strong suits, although Steve Harris was responsible for much of their work.
Total score: 38

A. A. Nemthaenga (Primordial)

Skill: 6.5 - Not a flawless technical vocalist, but can still hit and hold some impressive notes, and move from clean singing to screaming effortlessly
Emotion: 10 - One of the most emotive vocalists I've ever heard, makes every word drip with conviction.
Stage Prescence: 9 - commanding stage prescence and knows how to work a crowd
Versatility: 7 - great clean voice but can shift effortlessly to an inhuman scream, slthough doesn;t really play with genres too much
Lyrics: 8 - really emotional and evocative
Total score: 40.5

Mike Patton

Skill: 8 Again not a conventional vocalist, but has a great range and can hold a tune perfectly
Emotion: 6 - can turn it on when he wants to, although thats not usually his style
Stage Prescence: 10 - an absolute madman
Versatility: 10 - the absolute master of vocal role-play
Lyrics: 8 - always crazy and humourous
Total score: 42

M. Shadows as current vocalist - very G'n'R style with a rougher edge than the Axe.

For all time I'd rate J Page and Hutchence up there and of course Bruce Dickinson.

Skill: An easy 10. Can do everything from crooning to rapping to screaming.
Emotion: 7.
Stage Prescence: Never seen him except on youtube, but it would have to be 7 or 8 from what I've seen.
Versatility: 11/10.
Lyrics: 8. Sophisticated wordplay, can do emotional, funny or both at the same time. Wrote a large portion of FNM's lyrics.

I agree with most of this but I'd probably give his stage presence a 9.

He adopts a different stage presence depending on the music he is performing but they are all very intense and entertaining.
