DLR didn't have a great voice but he was the ultimate frontman. And I do like his voice - gravelly and dirty. Also very versatile - rock, blues, swing, jazz etc

I can assure you that I have every AIC track ever recorded. :D

Get Born Again is superb, great track.

I've always loved Over Now and God Am as well as so many tracks on Jar of Flies.

Would.

Just too many good tracks to name really.

As for what spacemonkey said, it's why I love Layne. He is pretty decent technically anyway but it's the emotion that does it for me. So amazing.

Noone can show pain (especially) more than layne for sure. I, like you also have every AIC track ever recorded, and how can you stop at over now, god am, and would? You can keep going, Sludge Factory on unplugged is another standout amongst many...

It was one of the greatest bands ever assembled, for sure.

Hot Dog and a Shake
Two Fools a Minute

Truly magnificent musicianship with a massively charismatic frontman

Speaking of charisma, i definately thought Plant would be more highly rated amongst the LU members - a favourite of mine anyway.

anyone who loves Cornell and Vedder, check out 'The Temple of the Dog'

Its Cornell + Matt Cameron (soundgarden) + Vedder, Gossard, McCready (PJ) - from memory.

Exactly right Fahrenheit! I have all their stuff and it's awesome! "Hunger Strike" is probably their most well known song, and the best IMO. And Matt Cameron actually went on to become the drummer for PJ as well.

yeah he left in 98 after Soundgarden disbanded, and PJ has had plenty of drummers, but i personally prefer Abruzze (spelling) for PJ. Hunger Strike is an amazing song, i agree that its their best...

I can see that this thread is a rockers thread, and in that case Freddy Mercury has to take the cake, BUT, if i may step in and give my opinion from a rap music fans perspective:

Anyone ever listened to Public Enemy? Their lead vocalist, Chuck D, must have one of the greatest voices i have heard. Extremely powerful, distinctive, and although it may not have the range of some other famous vocalists, it does its job of getting the point across amazingly well.

Any feedback on that?

Agreed, Chuck D was a great exponent of his genre.

Re Vocalists - only the DLR mention considers them as a FRONTMAN. Here Mercury shines for sure, but forget what happens in the sterile world of the studio.

What about live? DLR and Freddy had tons of charisma. Why has no one mentioned

  • Roger Daltry
  • Steve Tyler
  • Bon Scott
  • Doc Neeson
  • Ozzy
  • Mick Jagger
  • Dee Schneider
To me, of the mainstream, Plant has it in a shade over Freddy. Some of Queens stuff was inaccessible. Plant did an incredible job stretching his vocal range to match the heights of Page, Bonham and Jones. And Some Zeppelin songs went for ages. Plant also conqured so many styles with Zeppelin - from bluegrass/folk to southern blues reggae to jazz to metal. To own songs as divers as Hate Off To Harper, Since I've Been Loving You, That's The Way and Immigrant Song exceeds Mercury I'm afraid. BTW, that's all off one album too.

And Dio has to be mentioned. He owns the stage. Such a powerful performer for a little bloke. Best stage vocal moment I have seen was Dio with 2 red cans in his face playing the devil "I wanna burn in hell with all of youuuuuuu" doing Sign of the Southern Cross. Made me sh*t myself twice - 15 years apart!

Charisma is the essential ingredient for a vocalist. That's what made vocal hacks like Ozzy, Alice Cooper and Bon Scott so loved, and Paul Young, John Farnham and Joe Lynn Turner so pompassly boring.

To me:

  1. Dio
  2. Plant
  3. Mercury

definately agree with most of that last post, i think my 5 criteria from above is probably perfect for an assessment of vocalists. Ozzy should've rated a mention and Jagger ofcourse (and all those you mentioned.)

Where's Dee Schnieder from?
