Seems to be all rockers getting nominated here.

I've always thought Mick Hucknall's had a silky set of pipes.

Gavin DeGraw, Jason Mraz, James Morrison, Amos Lee, great singer songwriters.

Chris Robinson of the Black Crowes has always been good vocally.

Lauryn Hill gets my female vocalist vote.

Freddie Mercury best overall. Great power and an incredible range. What's more, could do it live as well.

Re Vocalists - only the DLR mention considers them as a FRONTMAN. Here Mercury shines for sure, but forget what happens in the sterile world of the studio.

What about live? DLR and Freddy had tons of charisma. Why has no one mentioned

  • Roger Daltry
  • Steve Tyler
  • Bon Scott
  • Doc Neeson
  • Ozzy
  • Mick Jagger
  • Dee Schneider
To me, of the mainstream, Plant has it in a shade over Freddy. Some of Queens stuff was inaccessible. Plant did an incredible job stretching his vocal range to match the heights of Page, Bonham and Jones. And Some Zeppelin songs went for ages. Plant also conqured so many styles with Zeppelin - from bluegrass/folk to southern blues reggae to jazz to metal. To own songs as divers as Hate Off To Harper, Since I've Been Loving You, That's The Way and Immigrant Song exceeds Mercury I'm afraid. BTW, that's all off one album too.

And Dio has to be mentioned. He owns the stage. Such a powerful performer for a little bloke. Best stage vocal moment I have seen was Dio with 2 red cans in his face playing the devil "I wanna burn in hell with all of youuuuuuu" doing Sign of the Southern Cross. Made me sh*t myself twice - 15 years apart!

Charisma is the essential ingredient for a vocalist. That's what made vocal hacks like Ozzy, Alice Cooper and Bon Scott so loved, and Paul Young, John Farnham and Joe Lynn Turner so pompassly boring.

To me:

  1. Dio
  2. Plant
  3. Mercury
Mercury is the only signer I have heard whose voice is just as powerful, emotive and just downright perfect when he performs live and in the studio.

There is not a human being in the known existence of earth whose singing voice is as consistently smooth, has such a massive range, has a versatile voice enabling them to sign many varying styles of music and can hold notes as long as Freddie Mercury

Anyone who mentions Axl Rose needs new ears, the blokes sounds like he's been gargling tupentine before he started signing. He has one pitch - coarse.

He makes James Hetfield sound like Freddie Mercury ffs.

Sebastian Bach anyone?

Has a pretty decent range and has nailed an Iron Maiden cover, not to many singers can do that.

I am a huge Bach fan as well. He has an amazing voice.

My top 5 are
Freddy Mercury
Axl Rose
Steven Tyler
Sebastian Bach
Bruce Dickinson

He should stick to screaming. In the latest album, his 'singing' is painful to listen to.

Mate the way I see it the whole current album is pretty average... apart from the 2 minute Hotel California-style outro in Dear God.

He sung in City of Evil and that is the best album I've heard from a band in the last 10 years, bar none.

Wholeheartedly agree with most mentioned, so it would be useless for me to repeat them. Therefore, limp-wristedly stretching genres a bit -

David Crosby
Billy Joel
Michael Jackson (seriously, despite being a nutcase, he could sing)
Peter Gabriel
Frankie Valli
Justin Hayward
Michael Hutchence
Tiny Tim (again, despite appearing to be a nutcase, he could sing)
Scott Walker

Regardless of how atrocious one might find the music, and that goes without saying on this forum, they had voices.

lol, I was talking about City of Evil, their newest one slipped my mind. Waking the Fallen was their best, imo. I can't stand some of the screeching in City of Evil, which is a shame because it had potential to be so much better.

Well i'm going to talk about great females lead here as we already know that RJD and Axl are the greatest ever.

1st Johnette Napolitano, Concrete Blonde, an amazing singer with a terrific range and from all reports a great live act.

This is her with 'Joey'

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MIIlUHBNkEc

2nd Leslie Knauer , Promises, an unbelievable range with the best set of natural assets i've ever seen

This is her with 'baby its you'

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xyvgv9J6maE

3rd Christina Amphlett, The Divinyls a great Australian female singer, made it overseas and apart from a great voice was a terrific live act.

This is her with 'Pleasure and Pain'

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TDnhKyn-xaA

4th Fiona Horne, Def fx, this girl had so much talent it wasn't funny, looks, magnificant range, lyrics, live act ( she flashed her boobies at us once on stage :) an absolute waste that she didn't carry on her talent after the demise of one of Australia's better and more talented groups.

Here is 'Psychcoactive Summer'

I can't believe we've gone 3 pages and not a single mention of Trent Rezonor. His voice is pretty weak these days but back in the 90's there's not a singer that comes to mind that can match the intensity that he can convey.

Mercury still stands alone though IMO. On the next level down from there in no particular order and not based necessarily on range and skill: Robert Plant, Janis Joplin, Tori Amos, Maynard James Keenan, Bob Dylan, Thom Yorke, Kurt Cobain, David Bowie and Paul McCartney (when he was taking a break from the love songs) just off the top of my head.

Staley sh*ts all over most of your second tier (IMO, ofcourse)

Ha! Of course, Reznor.

And Maynard goes without saying. Brilliant.

Not so sure about Kurt though ...

Ronnie James Dio. Perfect in the studio, and live. His emotion is superb, and there is no more powerful voice. His problem? Not as commercially sucessful, or as well know as Freddy. Those that know his solo stuff, his Sabbath years, his Rainbow years or even The Butterfly Ball know he's been cutting it for over 30 years. Most of new metal (apart from the dickheads that listen to a wailing stuck goat like Axl) have used Dio as their mentor.

If I can find a youtube clip of Sign of the Southern Cross, Voodoo, or Don't Talk To Strangers, I'll put 'em up.

Robert Plant's range exceeds that of Mercury.

But I still love Freddy's voice!

Agree re Axl. He is sh*t. A tosser as well. An ugly cutie. Rather listen to Angry Ansderson.

Yes, I am ashamed. And especially ashamed that no one has mentioned JAMES BROWN!!!! I have a DVD of his he did when he was about 65. F**king awesome, sh*t hot band that would change song with a drop of his hand. Performed a medly that went for an hour, never stopped. Amazing.

Gees , the mention of them is making me head toward my old Platoon soundtrack.
