It all comes down to the question of what Origin's role is.

If we're opening it up to players of all International allegiance, then surely it's an All-Star series in all but name now - right?

No. You still need to be born or raised in NSW or QLD to be eligible.

That said - Origin's role as a Kangaroos selection has long been overstated.
Cynically, it exists to sell expensive TV adverts and tickets. Keep the mythology of it being true QLDers hating true NSWmen alive still matters for a lot of people. But I suspect long term (give it another 10 years...) the eligiblity will loosen further. I'd bet it eventually will become an All Stars event and personally I'm fine with that.

Radley hahaha God no
Have some compassion and sympathy Chins. The guy had to cancel his wedding as 600k was not enough to pay for it after he got fined for allegedly buying a couple of 8 balls for his snooker table. The extra 30k per SOO game might mean wedding is back on.

Origin is not dying. But I do see it morphing into an all star event.

The current change doesnt make it any less "true" - you still have to be born or raised in NSW or QLD.
Cutting loose the delusion of "Kangaroos selection trial" is a positive. It was never fair that a kid born in Sydney could be cut out from Origin for honouring his parents heritage.

But once the audience gets used to this change, I could definitely see a push towards allowing Kiwis to play with their "Origin" being first NRL contract. With Warriors aligned to NSW via NSW Cup, PNG and WA aligned to QLD? Storm could go either way, they're in NSW Cup these days but have long had QLD feeder associations.

The thing origin should try to do is get back to being a very entertaining product on the field. It was such a great spectacle in the 80s and 90s with great open play, set pieces, brawls. Now obviously we cannot have brawls but make it brilliant football. The 2010s were a disaster in terms of the origin game play.

I probably don't see it going that far. But I do see maybe something like if you played in Australia before 16yr's old, then you could be considered for selection. You still need to keep it from become somewhat farcical cause you don't want the event to end up like a NFL pro bowl eventually where no one wants to play it seriously.

Only if you are too dense to understand there are still tight eligibility rules that govern selections

Its not like they are letting Herbie Farnworth and Joseph Tapine play SOO

… did we just bump a thread from 2004? Incredible.
There was a thread the other day that got a bump from 2007 and I thought that was impressive..!

There were babies being born the day that last reply was posted who are now driving, working, and having babies of their own in the time since that final message from 2004 was posted.

Great change and long overdue.

It's criminal that AFB, born and raised in Sydney, can't play for NSW because he played 16mins off the bench for NZ as a 20yr old, same with Taumalolo for QLD

This rule will only affect a handful of players, it won't change the fabric of the game or make it an 'All Stars' game.

absolutely. there was nothing better than origin in the 80s.

then in the 90s, probably when gould took over for nsw, the game turned into 17 gorillas against another 17 gorillas going one out all game. it's been the same ever since.

Under Mage it started to look better but Laurie Daley is the worst coach for this.

Its a good decision.

Now get to 20 teams so we can fix the scheduling. Origin makes our game plenty of money but it is a real handbrake on the middle of the NRL season.
