Haddin at his best is a mile better than Paine, but problem is he is nowhere near his best.

Haddin and his keeping days could be numbered.

Bit sad watching him today, he's just past it. Did a good job post-Gilchrist until abotu the World Cup but form has dropped right off since then, is 34 or so and ready to go. Didnt benifit from getting in the side at 27 or so (being behind an all time great and all), finally getting in at 30 has left him with a shorter peak.

Hopefully Wade or Nevill get a run in Perth.

Haddin has never shown the mental fortitude to be a Test player. His comments about "playing our natural game" when he threw his wicket away to that disgraceful shot in South Africa simply served to prove that he is not a very good thinker about the game. Your wicket keeper needs to be able to assess the flow and pace of a game and assist the captain where possible. Luckily Clarke is a natural when it comes to the feeling the pulse of the game.

Even if these other guys don't have averages that warrant Test selection, I hope they pick the one with the most cricket nous.

Mathew Wade averages 40 with the bat after 50 FC games

From all reports is very solid keeper, and is 24yo

With Paines injury woes, Youd think Wade is next in line

As has been mentioned, Haddin at his best is easily the best option in the country. The question now is whether his is past it or just lacking confidence.

Unfortunately it appears he might be on his last legs.

But Tim Paine? Myth

But Tim Paine? Myth
Why is he a myth?

The Tasmanian players say he is the best player in their team, and the general feel around cricketing circles is that he is a genuine leader who could captain his country.

You can't judge a wicketkeeper by runs and wickets alone, their character is a very, very important part of their makeup, and that of the team. If the people who know Paine well think that he will bring the right elements to the team, then maybe us mug punters should recognise that.

Remember, Ian Healy's record was non-existant when he was picked, but he was picked on character because the selectors knew that a wicketkeeper must be the heartbeat of the team.

If Brad Haddin could actually keep, would have no problem with him. He would have made a ton if he got the chance the bat. Its his diabolical keeping that irks. Gambhir drop was inexcusable

If that is the case then maybe the consensus is that Haddin is a better motivator in the field and despite a few goofs is considered a better quality batsman than Paine? Paine is only a couple of years younger than Clarke and even if he does succeed Haddin, he wouldn't be the ideal leader in his early to mid 30s.

Well I for one am stunned that his Tassie teammates would back him ...

Maybe. Maybe he is still in the team because of his experience.

However, the rumours suggest he was gone if not for Paine's injury, and his own decisions when batting and comments afterward bad dismissals would suggest that his credentials are questionable. Some journalists have even stated that his position as VC (when Watson is injured) is hard to take due to his cavalier attitude.

Not saying any of this is definitive, but there's certainly a lot of smoke.

Way to answer sarcastically to just the first sentence you dick.

Besides, I never said that the Tasmanians think he should be the Aussie wicketkeeper (which I've no doubt that they do), I said that they (perhaps not all of them, but some of them) think him the best player in their team. Better than Ed Cowan, Hilfy, Xavier Doherty, Krezja, and their own captain.

If he is the best player in their team then the tassie team is shithouse...

Wicket keepers these days should be judged for the wickets and runs.. I know a few people that have a great character and can catch should they be in the team?
