Maybe. Maybe he is still in the team because of his experience.

However, the rumours suggest he was gone if not for Paine's injury, and his own decisions when batting and comments afterward bad dismissals would suggest that his credentials are questionable. Some journalists have even stated that his position as VC (when Watson is injured) is hard to take due to his cavalier attitude.

Not saying any of this is definitive, but there's certainly a lot of smoke.
I think Watsons injury saves him as he's the obvious vice-captain of the current side, given he has a heap of leadership experience (captained one of our Shield victories) at NSW level.

Paine is pretty over rated though, batting is nothing special and his keeping is hardly outstanding. Wade or even Nevill would be a better option but our selectors love to pick a golden child

Way to answer sarcastically to just the first sentence you dick.

Besides, I never said that the Tasmanians think he should be the Aussie wicketkeeper (which I've no doubt that they do), I said that they (perhaps not all of them, but some of them) think him the best player in their team. Better than Ed Cowan, Hilfy, Xavier Doherty, Krezja, and their own captain.

Sorry mate, but Wade ---> Nevill ---> Paine

Exactly. If Paine is the best player in Tasmania (I'd probably have Butts ahead), then they'd think they were in the presence of gods if Wade went back or Nev went south rather than north.

Paine's not a bad player by any means, but he's no where near as great as he is made out to be by CA and the hangers on.

How is Wade's glovework?

never really seen him play but his batting record looks solid.

Surely a decent chance for some one dayers soon I would have thought.

I would have Wade as the ODI opening bat/keeper.

His ODD form since opening the batting from midway through last season has been amazing.

3 centuries last season and 1 so far this season in the 50 over game.

And now Haddin says India are fragile, or was he referring to himself???? Pressure right on him now to perform. I assume that was his motive for making his comments???

Lol Zaheer fired back saying Haddin should focus on his keeping:lol:

Haddins the Australian vice-captain. He was always going to be asked questions, and why shouldn't he say they're fragile? They kind of are.

Why? Because Haddin has looked "fragile" himself for a while now. He is starting to look as if he is losing his eye sight. You wouldn't know this bloke is the VC though, they do well to keep him out of the media. Ponting and Hussey seem to front up a lot for media duties.

I haven't read the entire thread, though my thoughts two points on Brad Haddin that have been in the media of late are this.

1. The comments he made about the Indian team being mentally fragile (paraphrasing) I hated it, just hated it. If it was from our captain Michael Clarke, fine, though from a player whose glove work and batting are below par currently, I just cringed. It brought attention on him as opposed to the team and in my opinion, Haddin should be advised to adopt the "less said the better" as an individual and work hard on his all round game. I do agree though with a couple members stating "well he is Vice Captain" and that he will be asked questions, though this can be managed by team management as Spot On stated above. Haddin can be removed from the firing line and in my opinion he should be when dealing with the media at the moment.

2. Brad Haddin should announce his retirement from Test cricket effective immediately after this series. I am a patriotic New South Welshmen and an ardent Brad Haddin supporter, though looking at the long term health of the team, I'd much prefer blooding Matthew Wade. Why? Wade is ten years younger and we lose little in the keeping and batting department. Some good judges may argue we would gain if anything (I am on record as having a preference for Tim Paine, though he is injured and cannot justify waiting on his possible return).

I also envision until the completion of the 2013 Ashes a top six evolving around; Warner/Marsh/Cowan/Khawaja (settling on opening pair a juggling act - I'd prefer Warner and Marsh or Cowan), Watson, Ponting, Clarke and Hussey. With Ponting and Hussey likely to move on close together, having Wade in the side now nullifies any negative impact this may have on the team as a whole. Keeping Haddin in with Ponting and Hussey means we potentially lose three stalwarts in a short turn around which is less than ideal in my opinion.

Brad Haddin is an unlucky cricketer in many ways as he was behind the greatest keeper the game has seen in Adam Gilchrist. In many other eras, Haddin would be redefining the role as Gilchrist did after replacing Ian Healy. Haddin has had a good career with Australia, I'd prefer we end it now and with an eye on the big picture, bring in Matthew Wade who will battle with Tim Paine for the next few seasons (assuming Paine can and will return).

How blokes with such average numbers like Paine and Marsh are considered part of the future furniture is beyond me

I was a defender of Haddin until recently.

Clearly his glove work is getting worse and his batting has been poor for a while now.

Possibly we do not have great options to replace him but they may as well expirement with a younger bloke sooner rather than later.

We do have great options in Matthew Wade and Tim Paine if he is able to return to cricket.

Tim Paine averages 35.87 in four Tests, 31.62 in First Class cricket. Gilchrist lifted the bar for poor keepers and we now expect our keepers to average 40+. Paine is more than handy with the bat and his keeping is first class. I select a keeper primarily on his glove work in which Paine or Wade are both more than capable in this department and both can swing the blade. Wade at this stage is probably a little stronger as a batter, Paine in my opinion a better keeper.

Shaun Marsh is someone who hasn't realised his obvious potential in my opinion. We have seen glimpses, though his best cricket is ahead of him. I hope selectors persist with him, I think we will all be rewarded if we do.

Paine is supposed to be the next Captain. I can't figure that out at all.

Next or possible future Test captain? With Michael Clarke aged 30 nearly 31, it's anyone's guess as to who will succeed him. Any such label on a young cricketer at the moment is an opinion that is up against injury, form loss, the rise of alternate options etc. Damien Martyn as a youngster was seen as a possible Test captain by many for example.
