I'm reading the Sunday telegraph at the moment. It says that the Board has given Hagan five months to save his career. Hagan was quoted as saying that Denis has decided that "By March they'd be in a position to reassess beyond next year". The article also mentions that the Eels have signed Kevin Kingston One of the key elements raised was the absence of Ben Smith who was a"huge loss to our experience in the backline".

ohh so it was ben smith being missing that threw our season down the toilet im glad thats been cleared up for a minute there i thought it was ill discipline, lack of fitness and a totally ineffective forward pack that caused the problem boy is my face red

P.S. what is giving hagan another 5 months going to prove to the board over the train wreck that was 2008? its not like the eels will even play ONE first grade game before march are they going to take a few trial wins (assuming they win any) as proof the eels have turned the corner?

look at the trial form the boys showed last season, if anything he should have 5 rounds, if by then we see the same stuff as this year then this would be the best to say hages do what you have to for the rest of the year and he doesnt then show him the door and bring in rip ...

Bummer. I hoped that Dan Anderson would be appointed now for 2010.

trials are no guide to form every team is juggling things around promoting new juniors, putting players out of position to see how they go, its like a training run with another team there
yeah I know. I was being half sarcastic, half serious. I mean they said he has till march so the only guide is the pre-season trial games...

mmm - the 5 months thing sounds a bit whacky - what can be shown in 5 months? - any substance to the "5 months" or just telecrap creativity?

do we really need to be calling the guy names like "f**kwit"?

I mean i'm as sh*tted with the way our team has gone as anyone - and I can hack hagan being given sh*t over his coaching and called things like clueless/hopeless/useless/crap coach/etc, but I reckon the insults are tending to get a bit too personal

i'm sure hagan is a decent guy and probably has some ability as a coach (we did ok last year) - I don't think he deserves personal insults from ppl who don't know him from a bar of soap

Hagan set deadline to save job

By David Riccio | October 05, 2008 12:00am

THE Parramatta board has taken the extraordinary step of giving coach Michael Hagan just five months to save his career.

Hagan met club management last week and was informed by chief executive Denis Fitzgerald he had until March to prove he was the man to lead the club beyond 2009.

The decision has left Hagan in the unenviable position of having to convince the board he can resurrect the club's fortunes without a minute of NRL football being played before the supposed deadline.

"They asked some questions which I think they're entitled to ask when you've had a disappointing year,'' Hagan told The Sunday Telegraph.

"And I was pretty honest in my assessment of our year.

"Denis made some comments that by March they'd be in a position to reassess beyond next year, and I think that's fair enough.

"I'm happy to just focus on the immediate stuff you've got to get done and I'm sure that will sort itself out as we go forward.''

Parramatta's 2009 playing roster - not including those players participating in the World Cup _ will resume training on October 29.

With just one major signing for the new season - hooker Kevin Kingston from Cronulla - Hagan faces the most important off-season of his coaching career.

Hagan joined the club last year following Brian Smith's sacking in November, 2006. The premiership-winning coach took the Eels to within 80 minutes of last year's grand final before off-field ill-discipline and a lack of on-field maturity saw the club fail to qualify for this year's NRL finals series for the first time since 2004.

Hagan said the review process was cordial and that he left the meeting believing he had the scope to deliver the results required to stay at the club.

"It was just a normal review process like I've done most years,'' Hagan said.

"There was feedback on this year and also next year and where some players are up to. I wasn't looking for too many excuses but I think there were a couple of mitigating factors talked about that probably hurt us through the year.''

Key elements raised were the prolonged absence of experienced centre Ben Smith. Smith's ongoing knee troubles forced the premature shift of preferred wingers Jarryd Hayne and Krisnan Inu to the centres throughout the season.

"He was a huge loss to our experience in the backline,'' Hagan said.

The Eels' off-field behaviour, including a shooting incident in Kings Cross involving Hayne, was also fingered as a major problem.

With a focus on recruiting from within, Hagan said he remained confident the club was in good shape for next season.

"I think the players are all very supportive of the football club going forward,'' Hagan said. ``As a club, we've won the club championship this year for the first time in years.

"So there's a lot of positives there when you talk of a rebuilding year.''

Hagan added that the players' training and preparation over the summer would prove critical to the club's bid to be a force in 2009.

"There's no secret that those guys that have a good pre-season have a pretty good year,'' Hagan said.

Yeah I don't doubt we would have been in the grand final if Ben Smith played all year.

So if we look good in training and the trials Hagan gets an extension.

Then we get the wooden spoon with a coach who just got a 5 year extension

serves them right if in 5 months time anderson has gone elsewhere and we are left with stuart raper or graham murray as our new coach

The article is wrong. From my information he didn't get 5 months, he got 5 weeks to come up with some answers to some pretty pressing questions, Like fitness recruiting, defence and importantly club morale.

5 weeks sounds more like it....... by March next year all the good coaches would be snapped up.

That's exactly right.
Fitzy won't sign Anderson. Stop dreaming everyone..
The 5 mth thing is to ensure Ando signs elsewhere so Fitzy has an excuse
The simple facts are Fitzy can only work with a select few people.
Forget about your Bennett's, Bellamy's, Stuart's & Anderson's.
I can see someone like our U/20's coach getting appointed.
