Brave Tiger Cubs win in Heat
Saturday the 24th of January, whilst most people were at the beach, the Balmain Tigers Harold Matthews Development Squad play their first game of the season against the Penrith Panthers at sweltering TG Miller Field at Eastwood where the temperature reached 40 degrees.
But that did not stop the boys in black and gold playing an excellent game of rugby league and from the kick off they followed the game plan from the coaching staff and that was to put Penrith under pressure with strong defence and quick play the ball from the base of ruck to tire a much bigger Penrith team.
With hooker and captain Andrew Kazzi and half back Sam Gorman calling the shots it wasnt long before the Tigers crossed the with a repeat set of six from a smart grubber kick put into the Penrith in goal from Sam Gorman and trapping a Penrith player in goal force a Panthers line dropout. Balmain shifted the ball both sides of the field and saw big John Leapai crash over for the Tigers first try.
After the drinks break the Tigers were completing their sets of six and defending very strongly but from a handling error Balmain force a Penrith scrum and from the onset the Panthers scored their second try again through their number 12 .
Half Time Score
Balmain Tigers 4 Penrith Panthers 8
In the second half the Balmain boys went back to the game plan which was to force Penrith to make mistakes and to capitalise when we had the ball and the Tigers did off the back of a penalty for Penrith being offside and it was long when the Tigers were in again to score their second try through 5 / 8 Matt Janes to level the score.
After the drinks break the Balmain Tigers scored their third try of the game from a kick which landed in the Penrith in goal area where the Panthers were unable force the ball and in the mix winger Billy Moisdis got his hand to the ball and claimed the try.
After the last drinks break of the game the Tigers lay and wait for their pray to meet its fate and like a flash they took to flight like lighting to a fight until they holding victory in their claws and that came through a Nathan Bechara try and the Mighty Tigers fourth of the game.
Penrith were award a penalty late in the game for Balmain being offside and from a tap the Panthers charged for the Tigers try line only to be met by the smallest player the field Sam Gorman and help by 3 other Tigers players driven back in massive tackle. But the Panthers scored a consolation try which was the final play of the game.

u/17 Development Squad
In a tough battle up front, Penrith managed to squeeze out a gallant Tigers outfit who were hit by injuries and call ups just before kick off. Coach Danny ONeill was happy to support the S G Ball request to rest some of his players so they could play in their trial even though it severly impacted his teams preparation. Overall we played well, but with a much stronger squad next week we should do well in the Albion Park Gala Day ONeill said. Best for the Tigers was Ajay Vaivaka, Lochlan Piper and Luke Symonds.
Harold Matthews Trial
Although the team was outplayed by a much bigger Penrith outfit, coach Ken Stapleton took some positives out of the clash. He will now focus on the final squad preparing for the trial against Souths this Friday night. We missed too many one on one tackles which lead to Penrith tries, so we need to fix this aspect of our game up before round one. Best for the Tigers was Kyle Lovett & Ryan Kelly.
S G Ball Trial
Our S G Ball team flexed their muscles with a strong display against a much fancied Penrith side. To have a defensive effort like that for our first trial holds us in good stead for the season proper said stand in coach Gary Freeman unfortunately we dont get two points for the trial win so we need to keep our feet on the ground and continue the hard work Coach Brooks will have a hard time finalising his squad with so much depth but he is happy with that problem. The S G Ball also plays Souths this Friday night. Best for the Tigers was Sebastian Vourlos (who celebrated his birthday) Dean Parata & Joel Luani.
