If we started the NRL from scratch, what teams would we have?

Assume the NRL was starting all over again and a new competition was being born in 2014.
In the same way the A-League was started from scratch from the old NSL days.
No old teams, no old affiliations, no mergers, no hidden agendas.

How many teams would we have?
What teams would we have?
What cities could sustain multiple teams?

Please just state your number and teams. No existing teams or mergers, and no talk about what current teams should go or merge. Remember these will all be new franchises.
In the fantasy world, all franchises must meet certain targets or risk being cut for other clubs waiting in the wings.

My view...
An 18 team comp, including
3 Brisbane teams, 5 Queensland teams,
4 Sydney teams, 7 NSW teams,
2 NZ teams.

1. North Queensland team (Cairns/Townsville)
2. Brisbane City
3. Brisbane South/Logan
4. Brisbane West/Ipswich
5. Gold Coast
6. Newcastle/Hunter
7. Central Coast
8. Northern Sydney
9. Sydney City
10. Southern Sydney
11. Western Sydney
12. Illawarra
13. Canberra
14. Melbourne
15. Adelaide
16. Perth
17. NZ North
18. NZ South

Waiting in the wings:
A Darwin/NT franchise
PNG
Central Qld
Fantastic idea buddy, and then we may as well bend well and truly over and let GWS give it to us good and proper, mate no recognisable Western Sydney team and the whole comp goes to shit, as this is the heartland and Knights by the way i like the way you have slipped in a "Sydney City" team.

considered the CC but then thought if Newcastle get their act together with their new found billions then no reason Gosford can't become 2nd home for the Knights and would make them a mammoth club of they could succesfully incorporate that area into their catchment/supporter base. I did have a spare spot so CC could fill that.
You obviously dont know the difference between the northern beaches and the Central Coast!

If you started the NRL from scratch, you'd be looking at infrastructure - that means stadiums and juniors.

You would therefore get:

Penrith
Parramatta
Inner West (ANZ)
Macarthur (Campbelltown)
Sydney (SFS)
St George
Cronulla/Wollongong
Warringah (Brookie)
Central Coast
Newcastle
Gold Coast
Brisbane City (Lang)
South Brisbane (QEII)
North Queensland
Canberra
Auckland
Wellington/Christchurch
Perth

 @ the idiotic gimps that throw in Adelaide to "make the game national". If you are that stupid, you also need Darwin, Broome, Port Headland, Alice Springs and Hobart. At least 4 of those venues would not get 500 people. But obviously if you think like that you dont understand the concept of people.

Agree. These threads bring out f*cking idiotic ideas. Tell ya what - it would make a super club that would dwarf all others. And the gimp plonked in Adelaide too  They would never get within 100 of a combined Eels/Dogs!

Sydney (Inner, inc East, South, North and West)
Sydney West (Ashfield to Parramatta)
Sydney South West (Liverpool - Campbelltown)
Sydney Outer West (Parramatta to Penrith and based in Blacktown)
Sydney South / Shire / Gong
Sydney North / Central Coast

Brisbane 1
Brisbane 2
Gold Coast (though they almost dont deserve one)
North QLD (Townsville)

Melbourne
Newcastle
Canberra
Adelaide
New Zealand
Perth

That's 16 teams. In a World where you start from scratch you'd obviously look at other rivalries other than just Sydney, but some consideration does have to be given to where the core fan base is. As much a Melbourne Derby would be tops for example - there wouldn't be any justifcation for two teams there.

This list gives us a National competition, with teams in every mainland State Capital and the Nations Capital plus a team in New Zealand. There are also local derbies built in for the two biggest geographical areas and another Derby with the Central Coast and Newcastle.

I agree that people on the Northern Beaches might not want to travel to the Central Coast - but the Inner City team would represent the Lower North Shore and Peninsula anyway.

Anyway, it's not going to happen - it's just a way of passing the time in the off season.

I get your point about Adelaide, but it is a little bigger than Broome or Port Headland.

If Rugby League went there with a long term game plan, then it could succeed. It's the only way to view such a concept. But you need a population mass for it to succeed.

People only mention Adelaide because of dots on the map. To be fair dinkum, you have to
have dots on the map that covers the nation.

The people that bay about a national comp are not talking about demographics.

1. Adelaide Rams
2. Auckland Warriors
3. Brisbane Bombers
4. Brisbane Broncos
5. Canberra Raiders
6. Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs
7. Central Coast Bears
8. Central Queensland Comets
9. Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks
10. Eastern Suburbs Roosters
11. Gold Coast Titans
12. Ipswich Jets
13. Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles
14. Melbourne Storm
15. Newcastle Knights
16. North Queensland Cowboys
17. Papua New Guinea Kumuls
18. Parramatta Eels
19. Penrith Panthers
20. Perth Reds
21. South Sydney Rabbitohs
22. St George Illawarra
23. Wellington Orcas
24. Wests Tigers

So that's 24 teams with:

6 QLD Teams (Brisbane, Brisbane 2, Central QLD, Ipswich, North QLD and the Gold Coast)

11 NSW Teams, Central Coast Included

Canberra, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, Auckland, Wellington and Papua New Guinea

There would be 4 conferences of 6, with 12 rounds (play each team home and away and 2 byes)

Conference 1 (QLD): Broncos, Bombers, Comets, Cowboys, Jets, Titans
Conference 2 (Southern): Souths, Dragons, Sharks, Canberra, Tigers, Bulldogs
Conference 3 (Northern): Easts, Manly, Bears, Eels, Panthers, Knights
Conference 4 (Non NSW/QLD): Adelaide,Auckland, Kumuls, Melbourne, Perth, Wellington

Now there is something that would make me very happy, especially if the Roosters were re-named back to Eastern Suburbs, it just has a better ring to it. Anyway we all know this will never happen, but a man can dream...
