Is Channel 9 the home of rugby league?

Another day, another rugby league in crisis at the home of rugby league. This time over a minuscule 85k cumulative round 1 difference, apparently the horror off season is the cause! No mention that the lowest nrl game outraged the entire round of the A league! This rubbish feeds the fake narrative in the general public that rugby league is dying!

The NRL has taken a TV ratings hit with 85,000 less people tuning in to round one compared to last year.

All eyes were on how viewers would respond following the game's off-season from hell which has dragged the game's name through the mud and prompted the ARL Commission to introduce its controversial "no fault" stand down rule.

Despite round one getting off to a flying start with a bumper audience tuning in to the Melbourne v Brisbane season opener, numbers flagged across the weekend.

A total cumulative audience of 4,055,000 tuned in across Fox League and Channel Nine for the eight matches, down from 4,140,000 for the 2018 opening round.

However these number do not take into account the number of viewers who tuned in across streaming portals including Kayo and the NRL's app.

Officials at Rugby League Central were doing handstands after the Storm's 22-12 win over the Broncos attracted a record audience of 1,183,000 (334,000 on Fox League, 849,000 on Nine) on Thursday.

Comparatively, last year's corresponding game between St George Illawarra and Brisbane reached 1,026,000 viewers.

Last year's opening round did have the added bonus of the first Saturday fixture kicking off at the viewer-friendly timeslot of 4.30pm, while this year the Warriors v Canterbury clash began at 3pm.

If I'm not mistaken, but I believe kayo numbers aren't taken into account at all for any TV ratings.

I think it's more likely that people who normally watch Nine are using kayo, as opposed to Foxtel subscribers dumping Fox for Kayo.

Exactly!
And even without this, there is absolutely no need for this rugby league bashing article. No other sport cops this!

Read it too and thought the same. Pathetic effort.

Today Show’s AFL crapfest will only kill it quicker as ratings continue to spiral

BY SCOTT DILLON

What is going on at The Today Show? You’d swear they were the official broadcaster of the AFL if their recent antics are anything to go by.

Ratings have been in free fall and they’re getting bashed daily by Sunrise over on Channel Seven.

Just the other day they were beaten by the ABC morning show which is no small accomplishment.

On Friday morning, The Today Show’s sports reporter Tony Jones (Victorian), seemingly oblivious to the major portion of his audience at home, waxed lyrical about the Collingwood versus Richmond Aussie Rules game. Apparently he and news reporter Tom Steinfort (Victorian) had a bet and with Steinfort’s side losing, he had to sing the other mob’s team song.

Live on air. Look out!

The rest of the Today Show team cheered and clapped at this momentous Australian television occasion.

Okay, okay, it might be cringe worthy to people in the northern states but who really cares, right?

It’s not the end of the world – just don’t shove it down our throats.

Even more disturbing was the fact that Jones at one point failed to even report the amazing game of rugby league played at Suncorp Stadium last night between Brisbane and St George Illawarra. Wasn’t even good enough to show a two second clip. Official broadcaster of the NRL – Channel Nine.

And it isn’t the first time this has happened – they have form.

Last week, on the opening night of the AFL season in Melbourne, a huge brawl erupted in the crowd with someone recording it on their phone.

Jones, speaking about it the next morning, somehow dragged rugby league into it labeling it a problem for both the AFL and NRL.

Last time we checked, dust ups at the NRL are very rare. Some recent fights at the AFL have been hard to watch including one fan stomping the head of another in a street after the match.

Let’s not even start on the racism.

The fact is The Today Show is getting destroyed in the ratings.

They won’t get any better if people in NSW and QLD, or NRL fans anywhere, have to keep waking up to AFL sleeper cells ruining their breakfast.

Well NRL has $30million a year in contra available to it, maybe it should be pushing Ch9 to actually support and actively promote the game? I wonder if any one at NRLHQ gave this same response to Ch9 HQ today? Im guessing not, and there in lies the issue. If we wont self advocate then no one is going to do it for us. With a media dept the size and spend of the NRL's you'd think someone would be in charge of media stakeholder management!

seems like ch9 just doesn't know how to promote their sports, or any sports, more than anything else. shows just keep failing: https://www.news.com.au/sport/afl/f...e/news-story/6c5decaa8fbd0fecdc3019d8aea2d478

anyway, suck shit "footy" fans. won't be long til the last rights are read to this abortion.
After the Erin Mooan disaster, they come up with the genius idea of Neroli Meadows for the AFL version.

They’re not a very bright bunch.

And nothing against women hosting, (Fox’s League Life shows that it can be done) but you couldn’t think of two more boring, uninspiring ‘personalities’ to host a show.

Another rugby league bashing episode coming up on ACA this week. Apparently interviewing the wife of an nrl player.

The home of rugby league!

I think Vossy started saying that when he joined Fox as a cheeky "f**k you" to his previous employer and now they're running with it.

"The home of the NRL " with only 30% audience reach! Not a wise scenario for rugby league! Yes, the NRL deserves better FTA coverage. Having a FTA simulcast game on a Saturday would help!

Channel 9 claim it, but only show 3 games per round for most of the season. It must be a pretty small home. At least Fox League show every game of every round.
