Look I’m sorry but it just annoys me when the club fails to re-sign someone everyone piles on and says “stuff him! better off without him!” etc etc. Just because the club couldn’t negotiate a deal that suited both parties.
Wait and watch Cam McInnnes absolutely destroy it for Sharks this year meanwhile we have McCulloch.
The Bird thing is a real shame, spewing they couldn’t reach an agreement, he’s an excellent footballer and is about to have a breakout season, dragons will end up with egg on their face.
chill out man. its not like the club is letting go of a promising junior who has the world at their feet. Griffin has always said he wants players that want to play for the dragons. Clearly bird doesnt

Yes. He has apparently had a small op on his injured knee so won't be able to play until at least week 5. We play the Sharks in round 3 so he won't be playing against us until round 20 if he isn't injured or suspended then.

Oh wow, I just read 2-4 weeks.
Here’s hoping it’s more than 3 so that we play Sharks when he’s still on sidelines!

Let me start by saying I like Bird, He’s all effort, tough, doesn’t take sh#t But his hands let him down at the wrong times because of a number of things like fighting in the tackle & too busy engaging with the opposition.
Plus no one knows his best position.

If he’s looking for a big payday & good luck to him should he get it but anything above 500K from us then he can take his mercenary mentality & faults I’ve stated elsewhere.

Bird showed a lot of heart last year and was often one of our best but me thinks he doesn't want to be a pig. He'd make an amazing lock If he changed his game and stopped slowing momentum by bouncing off 3 tackles a ruck and just used his footwork to find his front or ball play. He's not worth what he thinks he is and he's not going to play 1 or 6 for a top 4 side. He's a great player but not the one we need for the $ he is chasing imo.

nah, its 4 weeks from yesterday, not the first 4 rounds, first 2 rounds at the most. Even tonight Toby Rudolf said in an interview that he may only be out 2-3 weeks, so maybe only round 1 to be missed. Definitely not the first 5 rounds.

Yes, you are right, my bad. Will miss trial and the first two matches of the competition which means he should be back to playing us.

McInnes did his all for the team, sorry to see him go. Wish him all the best.

I like Bird, but you have to manage a cap, and he isn't worth overpaying for. (even if I am unsure his real worth, 500k + seems to much to me)

Love Bird and his want to win but not if it screws the cap moving forward. I’d be disappointed if he leaves for the $$ but with his history of injuries I get it. Tough one but hopefully he sticks around with good days ahead for the red V

I agree that the man put everything into his games last season and he does have the ability , however in saying that he is not worth a larger salary .

Still he is with us this year , so let’s see how he goes , who knows he may think twice about leaving and realize his true worth - not that that his agent has put into his head .

Bird is a 26 year old who has unfortunately had a stunted career due to injury. Griffin identified him as a target for SGI and brought him to the club, big tick. We nursed him through last year so he could get his confidence in his body right, mission accomplished.
Now when we are just about to cash in on our investment we are going to let him go to another club.
Next 3 years may be Birds best of his career, if he was being well paid and was happy he could have been our future captain.
I understand they want to protect cap but this hard line stance of just saying NO and not negotiating with the likes of Bird, McInnes, Sims could come back to bite us.
I hope to god that Sloan, Amone, Sullivan turn into stars of the game very quickly otherwise these isn’t much in our roster to get us near a premiership, fingers crossed.

Don't know what we are paying Bird this year but if he leaves next year along with Sims, that should be well over $1m in the cap to further build the quality and depth of the squad in key areas. And the following season I think is the last of Hunt's and Macca's contracts (stand to be corrected) which should free up something like $1.5m (or there abouts). As this is 2 years away, hopefully Bud and Mulheison (sorry if spelt wrong) will have gained experience and ready to step up permanently and money is then freed up again.

Just saying that cap looks like it's getting into shape snd being managed better with good money freed up each year to make additions.

Agree with your post. The 3 amigos show talent but there have been numerous players that were guns in their age groups, showed promise when they broke into first grade but petered out. Hopefully this not the case with them.

Bird for me is a good quality player, great to see him have a year without injury last year and hopefully this did a lot for his confidence and can build on that this year. Don't know what his role will be this year but if it is to be a rotational one on the bench, I think 500 to 600k max as I wouldn't want to be paying 700 to 800k for a bench player if that's the type of money he is after. I would rather spend the 700 to 800k on some 23 or 24 year old who broke into grade at another club and was on say 300 to 400k as they were young when they first signed on and are up for renewal and wants a big upgrade and we can pick them up as their club could not match our offer.

Bird is one cat who has not changed its spots despite the Dragons rescuing him from the Broncos who did not want him. From what I saw of Bird last season, the Dragon's offer of 600k was very generous.

I say let him go now and give another young back-row forward get his chance to shine.

So does Woods/Burgess/Sullivan/Feagai Twins/Armone/Sullivan/Lawrie/Sloan/Ramsey...did I miss anyone ?
The Amone contract upgrade will be interesting, if he plays out of his skin this year he’ll command a decent upgrade prior to Nov 1. I don’t want him anywhere near the open market, he’s the best 5/8 talent we’ve had in 20 years. If Bird’s money goes towards locking up Amone then I think that’s a fair bargain.
