James Maloney...... what do you think so far?

Im yet to see Cleary take a game as big as that and do what maloney did tonight.
Ive seen him look calm and steer the team around and a nice kicking game. He reminds me of Mitchel Pearce style. And quality wise he isnt far off as of now.

Maloney was solid against the dogs. Clearys pass to Morris cost the game.

Sure Cleary is young and has more potential but please.

And on the cowboys they played 3 of the top 5 teams from last season. Could of won all 3. I dont see your negativity Mx legend.

You say the club never beats a top side then when they are 4-1 outsiders and win by 20 points you still find a way to make it not that great.
Best Ive seen Panthers play in years. Forwards where brutal.

I agree with that. I knew that warriors game would be brought up as a defense. It was a pathetic unmotivated side at the time, hardly a career defining moment dominating them. A few games earlier Daz was calling for him to be dropped to reserves to find some form.

Your right, that was the best Panthers have played in years.

Moylan got injured everyone starting shitting on him and calling for May to replace him and now the same sort of thing is happening to Cleary. MX gets absolutely railed on for being negative but everyone here does it in their own way. Most just suffer from recency bias.

Yeah its ridiculous how quickly our injured guys are written off as shit. One game without Clesry and everyone is ready to move on.

Wtf? Cleary had games like that last year. Where people decided x player was holding him back.

At the end of the day it takes time for 2 players to completely gel in the halves and find the right balance.

Well if that's directed at me, please post even a single time I suggested May should replace Moylan.

I agree with MX about 95% of the time, but it's no crime to actually have your own opinions. I have never said dump Cleary. Just that he's not as good as the media and a lot of forumites believe, and that paying a huge sum for him might not be for the best.

The only reason I brought this up was because it's the first time since his debut that we've seen the team without him, and the sky didn't fall in. On the contrary, it's the best we've looked in that entire period.

5/10. Has been disappointing. But will surely bounce back.

Fangs strikes again.

About a 6.5/10 now after 4 rounds. Last nights 9.5/10 performance has improved his standing significantly.

I really hope he has another blinder and we put the Eels to the sword next week.

Cowboys are sitting on 1 from 4 right now. One win against a terriblr Sharks side.

Thurston has been shit. Morgans returning from injury. Coote is out.

Deadset. Trying to make shit more than it is. Cleary has been as good or better. The records speak for themselves

Gotta disagree, MX.

I’ve never seen an all round game like last night from Cleary. He’s played lots of good games, but never clinched the kicking aspect. That sets Maloney’s performance last night apart.

I’m wondering if Maloney at first receiver might be a better option for now? Only one game though last night, let’s see how the next few weeks play out.

Not having a go at you mate. You're a good poster.

Just a general feeling around here that players fall out of favour far too easily.

I agree we looked our best in years.

What a load of shit. Nobody has rounded on Cleary. Cleary is young and very talented. Nobody on this forum has said otherwise, contrary to what you and your mate MX are trying to make out. What Cleary lacks is experience, that's due to his age. Best way to get experience? Play with and learn from someone with experience.

What I look forward to, as everyone else does, perhaps except for you and MX, is for us to have a great halves combination in Clear and Maloney. Cleary will, due to Maloney's age, have to eventually become the dominant half, the only debate that I can see is when that change in dominance should occur. No body is putting shit on Cleary, so don't use MX's bullshit to put shit on posters.

Tom.

I'm not putting shit on anyone. I'm countering the narrative that we are negative and others are positive.

as soon as Maloney has a good game everyone is doing the exact same thing as they did with Moylan and start doubting.

I agree with you that they need to become a good combination. If Maloney being the dominant half helps that until Cleary is ready so be it.

It is also funny how quickly someone who has played at an elite level for years has one average season, turns 31 and everyone is ready to move on.
Maloney physicaly hasnt been playing NRL since 19, he looks fit and elusive. You have nothing but rubbished him and how he is past it.
Yes Cleary is the future but Maloney currently is the guy who has to tick on the board.

You mean like everyone turned on Jamie Soward?

I have been waiting to see how he went. A few posts in this very thread from me:

Maloney has improved a bit. Although 3 weeks in a row he has thrown shit passes behind runners. If he can hit our runners we score more tries. It should be a simple fix.

I was hoping he would do a Moylan vs Raiders tonight. His goalkicking is a handy backup .But he is yet to improve our attack.

Right now he's about a 5/10. Hasnt done much and weve only faced average sides . Just needs a few games where he sets up some tries. Forces some drop outs. Pins teams in their half etc. Like Soward used to do and he would be an 8/10.

When we face a few hot sides in good form we should have a better idea on if he fixes what we lacked last year though.

Also like to see him step up and destroy a shit team. We're good flat track bullies. Hopefully he can keep up with our younger guys if we get into that sort of mood. But 2 games in hes not close tosettled here yet.

Well we will find out whether he was a good investment or not while Cleary is out.

Im backing him to step up. But I wouldnt be surprised if he plays terribly and proves to be a dud either. I know he's had a history of success at other clubs. But he also had impeccable timing at joining them.

We have a pretty easy run while Cleary is out. On current form Ill go with:

Round 4 - Cowboys - loss
Round 5 - Eels - win
Round 6 - Titans - win
Round 7 - Sharks - loss
Round 8 - Bulldogs - win
Round 9 - Cowboys - loss
Round 10 - knights - win
Round 11 - Tigers - win
Round 12 - dragons - loss

Cowboys current form isnt great. But I feel like they will be much better. I think we can win atleast 5 games without Cleary and stay in the top 8. Climb to thr top 4 when he returns.

He was playing average footy and we all agreed on that. I never wrote him off from being able to play well again though.

I think the other factor clouding a lot of our opinions is the very real possibility of Cleary leaving. It’s a lot easier to say ditch him we have a bloody good half and Luai looks like he could make it when we might have to say goodbye to Cleary soon. If he was staying it’d obviously be, damn things are gonna be good when these two click.

I hope we have a stomper of a season and he has to stay for the glory because these two will be one hell of a combo when they get decent time together.

Maloney was a concern because he had a full year of bad and came here and started with is poorly while Cleary won us games with none of the experience.

Maloney has had a break out game now so hopefully it plays him into a good year but people were right to question him.

Please find the quote where anybody has said that Clearly is shit. Don't over react. He is still young and has time to develop. What you saw against the Cowboys is exactly the point I have made repeatedly, experience counts. It is why the games best players are not 2 season rookies.

Cleary has never controlled a game like that. He has scored spectacular tries and goal kicks like a demon. He is not a great ball player yet and struggles to organise the attack to create space. His tactical goal kicking is poor and he defaults to midfield bombs far too often. Picking the kick for the right moment is experience, although he needs to improve his short kicking game.

All of this can be improved with time and coaching. Being shit doesn't come into it. In my view all that Maloney's performance highlighted is what Cleary needs to improve on. He has other strengths that Maloney's doesn't have such as defence and a great running game and he can build his skills and add to his game.

Don't know how we got into this Maloney v Cleary shit. What I've taken from last night is, once Cleary is back, we have the halves to win the f**king comp!

You've got that right. that forward pack with the Maloney we saw last night and Cleary playing behind it is a dream team.
