Just my opinion of course but I reckon it could quite simply have come down to boredom... he proved to himself he was good enough to make it. But when you come from a sport where you are the focus throughout the entire game, you get your hands on the ball and are involved non stop compared to the role he was playing in NFL, then an athlete with the ego, for wont of a better word, like Hayne's I think would have found it hard to limit himself to a couple of runs per game etc
Different if you grow up in that country and play it your whole life, you don't know any different and more inclined to accept your role as part of the set up etc
Hayne would know that he ain't getting any younger and that his body is just about in peak physical shape right now and want s to explore the option of making the most of that right now rather than sitting on the sideline for 3 and half hours on game day seeing approximately 53 secinds of on field action in the NFL...
That's my take anyway...
To be fair it was probably the absolute latest he could have left it to give it a crack.
Also I would suggest that the workouts he did in Seattle when he went over there would have been the trigger because he scored very well and probably had some of the guys who have a clue over there tell him he had a great chance, 2 time Dally M medal winner or not.
He never used that as a marketing tool either, the Australian and American media did, never him. He gave up everything for a very slim chance, he just happened to work hard enough and beat the odds.
The only thing that confuses me is that all the talk out of the 49ers was that he had a real shot at making the roster again and he has left it. I do get the Olympic dream angle but it still seems odd to me.
Maybe it's just that I don't like Union so I don't know why anyone would want to play it
Dragged these over from the Foran thread 'cause they are about Hayne.
Here is another scenario to consider.
Hayne is all set for Year 2 in the NFL when his one true love (Parra Eels) get rocked by a salary cap scandal. He knows he can help us get back from this setback but can't do it until 2017 and if he kicks off another year of NFL, he won't be back in time for 2017 pre-season.
Has a look around to try and work out "how do I stay fit, get some 'rugby' thinking back into my mind and my body before heading back to save my beloved Eels". "I know, Fiji Rugby 7's Olympic team - make it a 'dream' because that works for the public and obviously I am Fijian so that works too".
Spends the next 3 months re-conditioning his mind and body to a rugby style game, does or doesn't make the Fiji team but that's a little bit irrelevant to the big plan. Olympics finish in September, have a holiday and be at Old Salesyards in time for pre-season November 1st.
