Ken Thornett was a visionary. Lot of people think Kevin Humphreys and Ron McAulliffe came up with the idea of Rugby League State of Origin....
Ken Thornett suggested it in his book TACKLING RUGBY in 1966....15 YEARS BEFORE THE FIRST SOO..

That is awesome Pete. Thanks for sharing. Now I have to find a copy of that book.

Is head-high tackling illegal over there, too?

Yes.
It used to be that you could lower your head and attack the runner with your helmet (Nate Myles-style) but that's been outlawed as well.
There is a lot of helmet-to-helmet contact still, but you just can't lead with your head.

And if you so much as brush your pinkie over a quarterback's helmet, that's an automatic 15-yard penalty.

Ken Thornett sounds like a good Rugby League Labor man to me re Players Union. Don't let the establishment dictate the terms.

Sir Jarryd has registered his own brand and trademark in the States

http://www.foxsports.com.au/us-spor...ing-global-brand/story-e6frf6ju-1227503181321

Arrogance, or smart marketing ploy ?

Our lines are open.

Smart.

12 months ago he was imploring the NRL to give the players more ownership of their own brand, stating how far behind the rest of the world the NRL is.
If Jarryd doesn't make money out of his own name, someone else will.

Hayne is one smart cookie, surrounded by good people.
I admire him.

We are so behind. I remember reading that article in the smh a few years back when he was talking about the NFL. He's a smart player and deserved everything he gets out of this. And now he's showing up the NRL and how poorly managed this competition is. Why can't players control their own brand? So so dumb.

Agreed! For a supposedly professionally run organisation we just look so amateur all the time.

Absolutely agree. Very smart move and Hayne was on the money when talking about it last year.

There is plenty of potential for players to make the most of their brand that is not utilised. Haybe is smart to get onto this early.

Question, though: To actually maximise one's brand it would probably be best to go with individual numbers. Super League did this, right?

It seems weird to me, though, and wouldn't look goof on the field. However, if Hayne only had the 1 in league to go with that wouldn't mean so much, as every team has that. 38 in blue and gold, though, could be his brand (as it will be in red and white with the 49ers).

So, is it worth that change to give the players that opportunity?

Personally, I think now, but then it just kills the branding as mentioned above.

Players can market themselves here, the problem is they can not do so utilising the NRL's property.

Yes. Just a minor point that people seem to have ignored.

What we probably need is a regime in which players can market themselves using NRL property (subject to approval) and the NRL takes a cut. The problem that the NRL face is that they are worried about individual players taking out sponsorships from the competitors of the NRL sponsors, thereby reducing the value of sponsorships received by the league as a whole.

Working out precisely what types of personal sponsorships (involving the use of NRL property) the NRL would be allowed to veto is tricky bit.

It's also a problem when figuring out how to include it in the salary cap.

Say we offered Hayne $10 for every 1 jersey sold through the store. That gets included in the cap.

Say a club sponsor wanted to use Hayne - that gets included in the cap.

There are fair points on both sides. I mean, the Roosters would have a field day if the second point above was relaxed and the first point above is open to scamming...on the other hand players are having their potential earnings limited. This doesn't increase the likelihood of a switch to NFL but it might in terms of rugby or AFL.

Complicated waters to navigate but that doesn't mean it can't be done and I haven't seen any real attempts recently.

All these problems stem from there being too many teams in Sydney. f**k this spiritual home horse shit, most of them are broke.

I would relocate Wests Tigers to Perth. Also make a hard call on Penrith and move them to Central Queensland or Gosford. I would dissolve the Titans and move them too. They have failed consistently no matter what they are called.

Convieniently leaving the Eels with all of western Sydney to ourselves? Agree with the expansions though. Central coast is an easy one - league has a decent following in Perth too. Id love to see the NRL fund a development team of Papuans, Fijians, Tongan & Samoans in either the NSW or QLD cup. Bring over some players, tie it into a scholarship of some sorts with a view to setting up an NRL team based out of one of the countries at some stage in the future.
