Is $600-$700k that much though for a quality fullback? It’s only about $100-$200k more than what we were hoping to get him for. It’s not massive overs as far as I’m concerned.
Hayne isn’t a quality fullback these days imo. It’s why he doesn’t play there anymore.

I wouldn't even call what he was asking big coin, and that's the club's figure (I assume). Could well have taken even less.
He was asking for more than what we were willing to pay and he didn’t come to the party.

I’m not that sad to see him go. Time for a new era at the club. Success hasn’t ever really followed him and I doubt it suddenly will next year.

I think that this is the worst time to be taking a stand as we don’t really have any other option. Hayne only wants a 1 year contract so it’s not as though it will nite is in the arse at a later date. We also have a ton of cap space coming off contract at the end of the year so next year’s negotiations would be the time to take a stand as there will be plenty more time to find plan b’s and c’s.
so you think we will win the comp next year because we sign hayne? .... i don't

why won't the merkin sign a multi year deal?

yeah our offer is only 100-200k less than he wants - he should just accept it

He was used at fullback plenty of times this year. And played the last round there.
He didn’t even play plenty of games so I can’t buy any suggestion that his performances at fullback were plentiful.

He could have been used there next year, but not successfully over the long term imo.

Nope but we’re a chance of making the 8 with Hayne, which will certainly help with future recruitment and retention moreso than finishing last and bottom 4 in consecutive years.

I can’t see any other option at the club having anywhere near the success at fullback as Hayne would long term (I’m assuming you mean the course of a season).

Did they show some spine by signing an over-rated plodder like Juniour Paulo to a four year deal? This club doesn't have any spine. Don't kid yourself. I used to be proud of this club. Not anymore.
For some reason I still am, maybe t's by habit. Don't blame anyone for feeling this way about the club.

With one of those years being with Hayne.

Bottom 4 without Hayne (which is what you are suggesting) is actually an improvement on what we would have done with Hayne the previous year.

I’m more interested in what the overall team does.

If we improve from last to bottom 4 without Hayne as you have suggested than at least we are trending in the right direction.

Well obviously he couldn't be used at fullback if he wasn't playing. Of the time he was playing, much of that was spent at fullback. He's only 31, plenty young enough to be a 'long term' fullback.

Possibly mate, but we’ll probably never know now.

Don’t get me wrong. He has been a quality player over the years and for the right price/contract length he would have been an asset.

But if he wasn’t willing to join for the price and length of contract that the club wanted to offer then I don’t begrudge the club standing their ground. As long as they are consistent on this going forward. If they aren’t then it will all count for nothing.
