Maybe so, but if it makes the whinging look funny then it makes the claims that the club had found a set of balls hilarious. This is the eels FFS!
It appears that we couldn't make things work on our terms and were happy to stick to those terms. If we do that with every signing going forward then that is a good thing imo.

Big if though. After all, in the words of some merkin 'This is the eels FFS!'.

The article El D just posted makes it pretty clear we just didn't have the money. But we would be prepared to offer him more (much more it seems) if we did. I don't think sticking to our terms is a reasonable interpretation.

And don't listen to that merkin, he was probably drunk.

Sure. It starts earlier than that.

We only had $200K available because we decided there were bigger priorities. I get why people might be annoyed but that's what we decided.

I guess we were looking at a back ended deal where he got more in 2020 but he didn't want to go for that. I'm sure the club knew that this was a potential risk when they signed Paulo, Fergo etc.

Did they make the right call? I'm sure plenty will say no. I'm even surer that several more will join the bandwagon next year if we don't perform.

Early in the season BA was saying that Jarryd wanted to wait till seasons end to consider his future. If we really wanted the guy why would we leave such little space? Then of cause when Jarryd decides we tell the world we want him to stay but have nothing left to offer. Little wonder we are such a basket case if this is indicative of our thought process.

Maybe the clubs gone mid season....Haynes been injured and done nothing lets sign Ferguson. Maybe BA is happy with Bevan,Gutherson or Norman at fullback.
He is the coach. Maybe the club took the risk with Hayne not caring if didnt keep him. Thinking they may move someone on but if not then no big deal.

Yeah fair points. But it also appears they have changed their mind, so I wouldn't be praising the club for how they've handled this.

Could be something like that.

But isn’t it telling that JH wanted to wait till the end of the season, this is a risk that he took and the club needed other scenarios to fall into place to fit him in (jenko etc leaving) if this doesn’t happen then it’s hardly a fault of the eels as they couldn’t just wait on Jarryd to make up his mind. I’m still hopeful it happens but if not, let’s move onto the future...

I reckon when Hayne said that he'd already been told that players needed to be moved on before they could offer him a reasonable amount.

I reckon this may be on the money.

All perfectly logical and acceptable if true.

Given Haynes track record, if he says he wants to wait til the end of the year before he decides, then I praise the club for moving on because we could have waited and at the end of the year Jarryd has another dream he'd rather chase, woops, there goes Fergo. A club shouldn't be put on a hold until a player decides what he wants to do.

I love Hayne, wish he would stay around but he's not even employed by us and still the circus is in town.

For 2020? ... i think no way we offer taka a contract ... if one of our halves stands up then maybe, but no way we will offer both

Unless they all play for minimum salary of course

Fair enough.

I am personally dreading this 4million war chest story. Every player and his dog who is unhappy will now be linked with us.

.

Not sure who if off contract but a Widdop, Green, keary type would be a good foil for either Moses or Norman. I think we will piss off Norman

The ideal situation for me is that we keep most of this squad cause we had a great year in 2019. Chopping and changing a lot can be a bigger risk, though if we do poorly will be a necessity

I'm sure this is exactly what Hayne was hoping for when he refused to negotiate mid-season.

He wanted a big drawn out process in front of the media, just like he has done before, I'm sure he was hoping for a bidding war to break out, hence why the media keeps asking every club if they'd want him.
