It's pretty amazing what some people will overlook when the person in question has money, status and talent. Much more high profile example but look at how many people are/were in denial about Michael Jackson. Guy had countless sexual abuse accusations from children but he's one of the most talented musicians of all time so people looked the other way and said "No way this is true, the children are lying"

In the circumstance of Hayne he still has a net worth in the millions of dollars and is one of the highest profile former athletes in the country.
