On 2SM, Graeme Hughes mentioned that Hayne's departure could have something to the $300-400K third party sponsorship that he didnt get that was mentioned earlier this year

For the NFL guys, I read an interview the other day where Hayne was talking about doing weights for the first time in years, getting stronger but also stripping weight off. I thought it was hard to keep weight on in League as it's more of an endurance sport than NFL?

If he was to return, it wont be with us.

I can guarantee you that.

I expected that, but it's still a shame.

I wonder if that article earlier this year about Hayne being pissed off because his third party payments weren't organised is contributing to this...

I'm not sure where he expects to play (though he did say he wants to "score heaps of touchdowns"), but it's interesting he's planning on shedding weight.

A lot of analysts reckon he's borderline small as it is...

Maybe, but I wouldn't jump to conclusions. If it was just about money he'd still be here I suspect (after all the NRL offered to kick in at the last minute). The 3rd party rationale would be a convenient story to circulate for some with political motives.

Aren't the wide receivers generally a bit smaller (and faster) than hayne?

Yep, and the corner backs.

He's a touch above average size for most skill positions (ex. tight end / full back).

I suspect he thinks his best shot is as a 90kg fast WR and kick or punt returner. Probably right.

Depends.

Some are smaller, but a lot are a bit taller and/or a bit heavier.

Hayne's size is pretty good IMO.

Rather than work on his speed (which I think is good enough), he should work in his upper body strength to help him block.

I think he'd make a good punt and/or kick returner - but they're usually fifth or sixth string wide receivers, and not specialists per se, so he'd have to learn to play as a wide receiver first.

I reckon he could do it tbh.

He'd make it as a lower-echelon WR who can return punts.

But then again - no team will see him as a priority, so...

if hayne is carrying that much weight that he says he wants to shed (5-10kg) I'd be asking what the hell he was doing playing fat (which if he was doing as much cardio as he says he wouldn't be carrying that much). if he thinks stripping/wasting that much muscle will benefit him then he probably needs a reality check as he will lose a lot of size, power and strength.

be interesting to see how he goes the first time a helmet plows into him if he gets a run somewhere as the protective gear they use also double as weaponry.

I think Hayne himself said he was playing overweight in 2013 (thanks, Sticky!) and that he lost weight but still felt sluggish in 2014.

He also admitted to being a lazy trainer at the Eels, and he hadn't done any proper weight training in years.

As for the helmets, well - it's being outlawed. It's already illegal to lead with the head.

see that's what I don't get. I thought BA was a disciplinarian and tough nut. I find it hard to believe hayne was lazy under Arthur's'. as for his claim he only did speed work about 15 mins every two weeks I call bullshit again. given speed is a large component of the game every team is doing speed work with endurance. the balance of speed/endurance changes depending on what point of the season/pre-season they are at and on scheduling.

with the helmet thing I know they changed the rules but I thought it wasn't outlawed and had provisions on how and where it could be used.

I could be wrong about the helmet thing - I don't watch much NFL these days (despite loving it) because it's impossible to watch the Raiders play!

Ill chalk down the training comment to Hayne not really paying attention to what he's saying.

if you have fox sports package (and don't need to be anywhere on a Monday or hook up fox go to your work computer) espn have a great show called nfl redzone.

pretty much just goes where the action is and no commercials. unless you were after one specific game in which case a league pass online is the way to go, it's the best nfl game show I've seen.

What Graham did to Tyrell in the GF would be illegal.

Should be illegal in the NRL. Well over the line of anything safe.
