I have a bad feeling he is going to be really stubborn about this and spend three years wasting away trying for his dream, sort of like what Michael Jordan did with baseball ...and that is going to tarnish everything he has built in the NRL.

And I don't understand why his ultimate dream isn't winning a premiership with the Eels

My thoughts exactly. He keep saying in the press conference he had achieved everything in league. Clearly a premiership with the Eels wasnt high on his list.

My feelings as well, if he had these thoughts for a while why not tell the club and give us a chance to plan for next year??? Now next season is totally f**ked.

Just when the club was getting back on its feet, this will kill crowds and memberships for next season.

The club has made massive strides the last 12 months and all for nothing.

The NRL has a lot to answer for as well. Losing some if the biggest names in the sport this year, the ASADA scandal, the knee jerk reactions to the rules.... League will always be a poor second cousin to the AFL until it starts taking itself seriously.

This is probably close to the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard by The Plane. He will only ever be a training team player. What a waste of time.

And when he does want to come back to the NRL, we will probably not be in a position to sign him due to the Salary Cap.

Ridiculous....on so many levels.

I think because 2009 was as close as he was going to get in his career, Let's be honest, unless a huge change is made, the Eels are a long way off a premiership.

I want them to win as much as anybody, I renewed my membership this morning just before hearing the news, and my wife asked me if I was re-thinking that decision.

My answer was "nope, I follow the Eels, not Jarryd Hayne".

It's a blow, of course it is, but they'll figure out how to win without him, and with the space in the cap he will leave will allow us to sign some quality talent, and the Eels will kick on.

He was going to leave the Eels at some point, right? he can't play footy forever. Why not take a shot now, he isn't going to get any fitter, and the longer he hangs on in the NRL, the bigger the risk he injures himself permanently, and his dream is gone. At least if he tries and fails, he can say he gave it a shot, but if he doesn't attempt to get what he really wants, being one of the best NRL players in recent history won't comfort him much. Premiership or not.

What a joke. Who the hell are his minders/confidantes??? Surely his manager, family, best friends, should have talked him out of it.

I know he is a grown man, but if he is dreaming fairy tales and no one is strong enough or good enough to persuade him back to reality then what the...

Especially his manager, and I'm sure it is not about money because Jarryd could have gotten more playing elsewhere years ago. So his manager is really dropping the ball here in regards to the best interests of his client.

Or is Jarryd's ego too big or fragile to see or handle real truths.

At best he will be just a so so player in a massive market/sport. What a waste of the best we have ever seen in Rugby League.

If he had stuck with league he could have gone on to be an immortal and even maybe won a premiership. But now unless he sees his folly real quick ala B. Marshall, then in 2 or 3 years, if he comes back who the f**k will give a shit?

WASTE!!!

I don't think there is much the NRL could have done. He wants the challenge and doesn't even have s contract so it's not like money was the top reason for leaving (obviously the potential financial award does help)

I just watched a replay of the press conference via the DT. Jarryd was got emotional at times but spoke pretty well about the matter (for an NRL player at the very least). Contrary to what I expected, he admitted that he has no offers lined up - he is literally going over there from scratch. I know he has the safety net of falling back to the NRL (to which he intimated that he would always be an Eel) but that is a f**king massive call. He also gave himself a 12-month window (aiming for next season) to know whether he could make the jump.

Not sure what you other merkins reckon but I think that Scott Seward handled himself nicely. Expressed disappointment in Jarryd leaving but threw his support behind him while reiterating that Brad Arthur has been building a TEAM that will be competitive.

Have to say, I haven't had the most productive day at work thus far after following the announcement and fall out!

Will he make it? I don't see it as similar TBH. A punt return has electric speed, and a wicked step. And there acceleration is dynamic. As a wide receiver he would be better served but than you need to undertand the plays. This is big time.He will get 3-4 mistakes before he is cut.Thats how it is over there. Lot of pressure.
Good on him for chasing a dream. But time to mov forward-wen as a club cant hold off plans incase he wants to come back.Must go after another player

good on him - gotta be happy with what you are doing in life - its his right to follow this through

unfortunately for him I don't know if it'll all work out and I reckon he'll regret it down the track .... but hey, gotta do what makes you happy now

out of interest, what is minimum salary for NFL players? .... I know NBA is only like 500K minimum .... surely and untried product like hayne won't be likely to get good $$$s there - so I would have to think its NOT about money

He will be lucky to survive the cut - even guys who play really well in the practice games and training camp get cut. Anyone who watches that series 'Hard Knocks' will see how tough it is. Aussie Jesse Williams, who is on the Seahawks roster, is lucky to still be there - injuries have cruelled him. And he was one of the best in college.

I hope this means our money is lined up for Cherry Evans and we are upping our offer to him right now.

f**king gutted.

I wish him good luck, but his timing sucks - we now have no genuine fullback for 2015. Robinson is average, Davis isn't ready, Hopoate isn't quick enough...

And IMO he will make it - they'll put him as a kick and/or punt returner and he will kill it.

f**k.

This might be his sneaky way of getting out of Parra and signing with the Dogs, without the backlash from all of us Parra supporters.

Disappear, force Parra's hand into signing up new talent(filling the cap) and then come back, but now the only club that can fit him in are the dogs. No wonder Hasler hasn't gone out of his way to sign a decent fullback, when it is as plain as the nose on Pinocchio's face that they need a super fullback to spark up their attack. ;-)

See the link for NFL salaries
http://www.spotrac.com/rankings/nfl/

Top punter gets 3.25m - worse gets udner 500k (remember all this is in US).

I don't think he will make it to the NFL but my biggest concern is when he comes back he will not be the same player as he is leaving. NRL is all about speed and power vs NFL where it is all about speed.
