He is not the greatest eel ever not by a long shot, most talented probably but greatest ever eel no way that's an insult to guys like Sterling , Kenny, Cronin, Grothe, Price among others who all won premierships an then guys like Hindmarsh who gave his all for our club are all now greater than Hayne

If Hayne had of played out his career in the Blue and Gold and won us a title he would be a contender as our greatest ever Eel. Now it is a case of what could have been.

He's easily the most talented player to pull on a Parra jersey, doesn't make him out greatest ever Eel though.

Gee, I'm not impressed with his timing (i.e. the mid-contract shit, with apparently no notice), but the whole affair doesn't depress me. We're in a better spot than we'd be if he did his knee in Rd 1 next year. Up and at em, with a bit of cap space.

This is why people are giving up hope, if we aren't world beaters with him, what are we without him? At this point all our attacking options will be coming from Sandow and Norman.

A few more thoughts now that the day has past and settled.

I have to say that this thread has made for an interesting read (no sarcasm) between the various interpretations on his transition to American Football and the ethics behind his decision and more.

As a bicentennial baby I missed the glory of Eels in the early and mid 80s. I grew up through the Super League war not realising the significance of the Canterbury 4 until much later. I can sure as hell remember the pain of '01,'05 and '09 (and the fury we all felt when it emerged that Melbourne had cheated) and was bitterly disappointed to see Cayless and then Hindmarsh retire without a premiership to their names.

I think that today has gone down as the most striking moment out of all of them for me. It felt like a bolt of lightning on a clear day - one moment Jarryd is here as the the reigning (co) Dally M player of the year and the next he is off to America. Regardless of how his career move pans out (of which I still wish him the best), I feel like this is a defining moment for our club.

At the very least every player on the roster might speak with vindication when they say that the 2014-15 preseason was the hardest they have ever faced! :lol:

Our team was certainly looking a lot better than it had in years, and was probably going to improve next season with the addition of Watmough and hopefully a full year from Peats.

If we hadn't been so miserable for the past decade (minus half of '09) then it wouldn't have been as big a deal. But after being hopeless for so long it looked like we have turned a corner...only to have our best player leave.

I don't hate Hayne for this. I don't hate the club for this. I'm just sad that I'm probably going to watch my team miss the Finals yet again next season.

This will affect our crowds too. Superstars put bums on seats and now we are without one. Penrith have no superstar, finished top 4 and had very low crowd figures as a comparison.
