Dragons player Jack de Belin to get sentencing 'discount' if he pleads guilty to rape charges

St George Illawarra Dragons player Jack de Belin will face an automatic 25 per cent discount in his sentence if he pleads guilty to his Wollongong rape charges, a court has heard.

De Belin and his co-accused, Callan Sinclair, stand accused of the joint rape of a woman inside de Belin's cousin's apartment on Gipps Street in the early hours of December 9.

Both were arrested and charged with one count each of aggravated sexual assault in company last December.

The Mercury exclusively revealed on Wednesday morning that police have since laid two additional rape charges against de Belin.

Charge sheets sighted by the Mercury reveal the additional charges relate to the same alleged victim. It it understood they relate to individual acts alleged to have been committed by de Belin during the same sexual encounter that gave rise to the original charge

Police documents previously tendered in court revealed the two players stand accused of repeatedly raping the 19-year-old woman inside the Wollongong apartment in the early hours of December 9.

De Belin allegedly began having sex with the woman before inviting Sinclair to participate, saying "come on, have a go", as the woman lay on the bed, crying.

Both men have previously indicated their intentions to fight the charges at trial.

However, during a mention of their matter in Wollongong Local Court on Wednesday morning, Magistrate Michael Stoddart formally advised the pair of their entitlements to a substantial discount if they decided to plead guilty ahead of any trial date.

"If any pleas are made it's important to note there will be a discount in relation to [sentencing]," he said.

Prosecutors told the court the four charges - three against de Belin and one against Sinclair - had now been formally certified by the Director of Public Prosecutions and both cases could now proceed to a "case conference", where lawyers for both parties will meet to discuss the issues in dispute and make formal pleas offers if practical.

"You have to make yourself available to [your lawyers] to determine whether any offers are made in relation to the charges," Magistrate Stoddart told both men as they stood before him in court.

De Belin's case conference will take place on June 4 and Sinclair's on June 17.

Both cases will return to court on July 24.

Bloody hell reading that it’s not about how long before he can play but how long will he potentially get in jail. Very disturbing but I guess I will leave it to the courts

It's an unfortunate & unforgivable mess awaiting to be played out in the Law courts whilst dragging our club further down. We are already lumbered with a poor coach & don't need any further obstacles to deflect blame.
You have to wonder why McGregor was so optimistic that De Belin would be available to play against the Knights?
Was he desperate and clutching at straws? Sure looks like it.
It is only fair that the legal process should be respected and allowed to take its course so why did we keep hoping that De Belin would make a triumphant return?
Surely as a football club, they can't make assumptions and keep hoping that a court decision would save our season.
The professional thing to do would be to plan for a season WITHOUT De Belin and develop plans that will strengthen our position on the ladder.
If you sweep all the sentiment away ("Jack is a big part of our club" for example) McGregor has an obligation to do what's best for the club, the rest of the roster and (wait for it) the fans.
That hasn't happened in this case.
The police don't just slap serious charges on someone for the heck of it.
They believe they have a strong case and I think De Belin and his mate are in for a massive legal fight to get out of this.
If they do, McGregor has a beautiful excuse for 2019 and will welcome JDB back with open arms stating that 2020 will be our year now that he has his star lock forward back.
But what happens if JDB is found guilty?
Something to ponder and a terrible outcome for our club on so many fronts.

Yes Dennis it certainly would appear the club has been given the wrong advice or simply clutching at straws. As has been indicated the coach will be given a gap year in 2019 based on 3 excuses: JDB case, Captain Widdop season ending injury plus a list of player injuries.
These built in excuses cover the Board & Management for extending McGooses coaching tenure.

The problem is that Johnston justified his decision to recommend Mary extension on Mary's ability to best get his players through this exact circumstance. The problem is that Mary is no genius and never could or never did what Johnston said he could do. I say a clean-out of SGI management is in order right now. It is clear our management is incompetent.

Love the peanut gallery and now the use of this as an excuse for bringing the players and team down after another article is thrown out by the same one sided media coverage.
It is an unwanted media distraction for a club or brand as they call a football club nowadays but i dont think the players are as fickle as some.
By all reports from the off season they were happy to have him around and its their decision, not based on outsider's presumptions.
False hope..huh, doubt it ..they were just answering media's leading questions as is every press conference.
My comments or presumptions about JDB will be made when the court case is done and dusted.

The bs artist is using JDB as a pathetic excuse for his own incompetence. Even he's not that stupid to strongly believe that JDB would have been available for the knights game

Our coach has mentioned JDB week in week out, since this sad state of affairs commenced.

Some one needs to tell our "coach" , to STFU, refrain from highlighting what is already a prominent case, and focus on avoiding the spoon.

Some of the blame must lie at the BOD, as well, as they should make sure Mary is aware that all he is doing by referencing JBD constantly, is helping no one, and bringing more spotlight to the club.

So what if other adverse circumstances appear in 2020?
Is the Board waiting for McGregor's stars to align?
It could take eons if it happens at all.
Where's the siege mentality?
The same philosophy Manly and Hasler have used so successfully for years.
This Board is not interested in winning comps.

Dennis the pack of Wankers have stated they see him as a career coach, whilst us poor fans see him as a rear coach.....i.e a pain in the arse!

To be expected after a charge certification. (Without having seen the brief of evidence) I'm sure Jack will be fine. David Campbell SC knows his bickies.

Of course there are discounts for early plea deals.
Im also sure his legal counsel is very competent.
