Eagles reach new heights
Erina coach Mark Horo believes his side's 22-point victory against Chester Hill was their best team performance of the Jim Beam Cup season.
The Eagles are 6 points away from fifth place after hammering the Rhinos 38-16 at Erina Oval. The home team led 16-6 at half-time and by only six points with 30 minutes to play.
But with halfback Hayden Karena calling the shots, Erina powered home in what was a must-win match.
``At 16-6 at the break it was a game we needed to go on and win and win well,'' Horo said.
``The pleasing thing was that when they scored early in the second half we didn't panic. Good sides don't panic.
``We played out our sets and went on to win it comfortably.
``There were no stand-out performers but we had no bad players either.''
Meanwhile, The Entrance suffered a heart-breaking defeat against Cabramatta at Bateau Bay Oval. Star playmaker Adam Tippett landed a penalty after the siren to clinch a 20-18 win for the Sydneysiders.
With scores locked at 18-18 with less than 15 seconds to play several Tigers players rushed out of the line to prevent Tippett from taking a shot at field goal.
But the referee ruled the players were offside and awarded a penalty.
``I feel sorry for the boys, we didn't deserve to lose, especially like that,'' shattered Tigers coach Jamy Forbes said.
``A draw would have been a fair result.''

Cabramatta's Casey Ellis is playing P/L for St George this week while Mounties have Demetrius Ainuu, who played for the Sydney Bulls and the Bulldogs P/L last year, listed on a large bench. Ainuu who started the season with Norths contacted the Bulls about 4 weeks ago looking for a game.

yeah it'll be good to have tim back out there again, also with peachey and swamy back this week hopefully the results will get a little better.
we still got big injury issues, last week between JBC and A grade we had 18 players out injured. from the 9 contracted front rowers 2 were available, most long term injuries too:(
If anyone knows of a couple of decent front rowers floating around give us a tingle;)

Peter Lewis, formerly of Penrith and Parramatta, was initially signed by and then cut by Wests Tigers this season. He is now playing for Emu Plains.

shellharbour defeated demons 18-16 tonight:x

demons led 16-6 at halftime with tries to wynn, ackroyd and kassab.
came out in the second half and did their best to lose the game, eventually shellharbour accepted the offer.
demons struggled after halfback couri and captain kelly were late withdraws, a reshuffle saw ackroyd go to half and peachey into 5/8.
Tim Wynn was the best player on the park by a country mile, a real classy player.

Sydney Bulls 46 (C Salem 3, D Barakat 2, T Bushby, A Mansour, K Deeb, P Rasobale tries, N Wynn 4, A Mansour goals) beat Chester Hill 20 (S Makisi, B Champion, N Ngaa, N Barry? tries, Barry 2 goals)

12 minutes after half time the Bulls led 36-0 and then let the locals score 3 tries in consecutive sets. Jolly was carried off late in the game to add an already long injury list.

Cabramatta 44 (D Thompson, G Britcher, R Brown, D Moore, N Emms, K Heckenberg, M Alifaalogo, L Branighan tries, A Tippett 6 goals) beat Asquith 12 (C Tuatara 2, W Bishop tries).

I heard a rumour that after Cabra gave Willie Gretch the flick they had decided to get Luke Branighan back from overseas and so it has come to pass. Apparently Hala Katoa had a big game for Cabra.

Other Round 10 results were:
Belrose beat Wenty 26-22, The Entrance beat Windsor 16-12, Mounties beat Erina 48-22.

The table is:

16 Belrose
15 The Entrance (+142), Sydney Bulls (+92)
14 Cabramatta (+91), Windsor (+83)
12 Mounties
8 Wenty (+100), Shellharbour (-172)
6 Erina (-54), Chester Hill (-156)
4 Asquith
2 Seven Hills

There is intense competition for placings within the 5 - Belrose win by 4 to move to the lead but had they lost they would be 5th, but only Mounties look like they displace any of the 5. Wenty's loss was crucial. Unless a couple of teams fall in a heap, Wenty need to win 10 of their last 12 games to get in the semis.

Cabra's young Hala Katoa did switch from Union in the past to League and has been playing as a junior in Cabra to C Grade and just recently A Grade.
And now successfully making his first debut in JBC.
What a great investment for Cabramatta, this kid has a lot of potential and named man of the match.

I guess now that he has made the JBC team he will play only league but like a number of players that play grade rugby on saturdays and A Grade league on sundays, Hala Katoa played against Eastwood in rugby as little as 4 weeks ago.

The Belrose Eagles now stand alone on top of the Jim Beam Cup ladder after an impressive win over the Wentworthville Magpies at Ringrose Park yesterday. Intent on reasserting their presence in the competition, the Eagles put on a masterful early spell to set themselves up for a great victory in which they were never headed. The match was important for both sides, with Wenty fighting to stay in touch with the top five and Belrose wanting to consolidate their position and reverse a month of unimpressive form which had yielded only one win. From the outset, Belrose played with a spring in their steps and pressured the Wenty defences with some enterprising attacking and pinpoint kicking. After ten minutes this pressure turned into points when Michael Lammana crossed wide out on the end of some quick hands. The sideline conversion from Plummer gave the Eagles a 6-0 lead. Just 2 minutes later Plummer, who had been terrorising the Wenty fullback with some towering bombs, hoisted up another which was fumbled by Wenty and fallen on by the chasing Tom Joseph and the Eagles were now leading 10 nil.

Wentworthville weren’t about to lie down though and after getting some good possession started to fight back. Many promising raids were snuffed out by good Belrose defence but at the 18 minute mark, the Magpies snuck through on a fifth tackle play to narrow the gap to 10-6. The Roses responded with the best try of the match. A half bust by the menacing Steve Carew provided a great tip-on to Richie Plummer who found James, then Tim Mortimer out wide. The latter popped out a great pass for winger Michael Lammana to score his second try. Another sideline conversion from Plummer put the Eagles 16-6 ahead.

The relative free scoring of the first twenty minutes now changed as the next twenty was a real tussle as both teams prodded and probed with solid defence now dominating the game. On the stoke of half time, again on a fifth tackle play, Wenty lobbed a kick into the Belrose in-goal for one of the chasers to catch and score.

Half time Belrose 16 Wentworthville 10

Coach Camroux was pleased with his team’s progress, particularly the first twenty minutes, but warned his men of the resurgent Mapgies who are capable of scoring plenty of points. Those words must have still been ringing in the ears of the players when Wenty ran in a try within 2 minutes of the break to draw level with the Roses at 16-16.

The Eagles struck straight back, though, when a number of incisive runs saw James Mortimer charge his way over for the Eagles to kick away again at 22-16. Another great tussle ensued with Belrose having to dig deep to keep the Magpies at bay. The largish crowd had to wait until the 62nd minute for the next score. It was Steve Carew who ran into a hole for what turned out to be the match winning try for the Roses.

Wenty scored a converted try with 10 minutes left on the clock for a 26-22 scoreline and to set up a heart stopping finale, but the Eagles held firm to grab the competition points and their first ever win over Wentworthville.

A complete team performance with some renewed vigour displayed by Belrose. In the final game of the first round, Belrose play the second placed The Entrance Tigers next Sunday 3pm at Lionel Watts. The winner will be the competition leaders, the loser could fall as far as fourth such is the tightness of this competition.

Chester Hill Rhinos V. Sydney Bulls
BULLS BOUNCE RHINOS
The long awaited Derby showdown between the Sydney Bulls and Jim Beam Cup debutants, Chester Hill saw the 2006 Champions grind down the Rhinos 46-20 in a spirited and entertaining encounter at the Terry Lamb Reserve.
An hour of ruthless play from the Bankstowners was soured somewhat for their coach David Bayssari when the Chester Hill side defied a potential mugging by scoring three times in three sets late in the second half, keeping the scoreline within some kind of respectability.
Suprisingly the opening quarter of the match was a nip and tuck affair as opposing halves Nathan Wynn and the RhinosTinetali Papalii, orchestrated several oportunities apiece with no results to show for it ; that is until Bulls' stocky wingman, Chris Salem, broke the points drought with a successful short dash to the line.
Halfback Wynn rolled a neat ball into the oppositions' corner soonafter that bull flanker danny Barakat swooped on to set up a 12 point lead for the Bulls.
A lightning strip, steal and score trick from bench backliner Troy Bushby stunned the locals from a high ball before Bulls stalwart Anthony Mansour, who had overcome a virus to play stamped his midfield authority with an irresitable surge to the line.
The Rhinos continued to lurch towards halftime, coach Geoff Robertson horrorstruck as the Bulls rattled up another try and a comanding 26-nil halftime lead.
A withering halftime blast from the former Bulldogs hero did little to change the direction of the match as the Bulls piled on a further ten points before the locals responded with a triple treat of four pointers, two galloping efforts from giant backrower Blake Champion.
The chastened premiers responded in kind with a pair of left side combinations before the exotically named, Nono Ngaa evened the second half honors with a sweet finish of his own.
The game however had already been won and lost in the first forty minutes- Bulls forwards, Puna Rasaobale and Khaled Deeb standouts in both attack and defence. Winger Chris Salem also put in a clever eighty minutes while Nathan Wynn's return was crucial to the Bulls offensive structure.
Chester Hill were'nt without their own standouts-half Papalii and fullback Nathan Barry were both sound all match while prop Travis Robinson tried hard all day to bend the Bulls line.
The Sydney Bulls continue to climb the ladder after a shakey April and are expected to be too strong for lowly Seven Hills this Friday night. Coach Bayssari is likely to ponder who to risk adding to an already high injury list in the short lead up to the next round. In form veteran, Steve Jolly, who finished the game with a suspected quad tear, may be rested from duties this week as Menai local, Josh Dixon showed plenty of ability at replacement pivot.
The Bulls are second one point of the competition lead coning into the last game of round one. A sensational effort when one considers that 33 players have been used due to injury and promotion to the Bulldogs.
Sydney Bulls 46 (T. Bushby 2, D. Barakat 2, C. Salem 2, K. Deeb, A. Mansour, P. Rasaobale; N. Wynn 5 goals) dft.
Chester Hill 20 ( B. Champion 2, T. Tuitama, N. Ngaa tries; N. Barry 2 goals)

Disgusted Moore flicks kicks
29May07
THE Entrance skipper Alex Moore said he was happy to hand the goalkicking duties to a teammate after he missed all four conversions in the 16-12 Jim Beam Cup win over Windsor at Bateau Bay Oval on Sunday.

The Tigers scored four tries to two to move to equal second place on the ladder but put themselves under pressure by not converting the tries.
``I'm giving it away, I've had enough,'' Moore said.
The attempts weren't easy but Moore was disappointed he couldn't slot any over. ``I don't know what's going on,'' Moore said.
The Tigers skipper said he would give the kicking duties to Kirk Thompson, the club's under-19 kicker from last season, who has played the past two games off the bench in the Jim Beam Cup.
The Tigers have called on some help from the Central Coast Mariners A-League soccer side to help them with their goalkicking.
While his goalkicking might have been off target Moore had a strong game for the Tigers and played a big hand in two tries.
The Entrance turned in another solid defensive effort and kept their mistakes to a minimun to give themselves the upper hand.
The home side opened the scoring when winger Ryan Wheele scored from a Moore bomb 12 minutes into the match.
The Tigers went out to an 8-0 lead when centre Shaun Corrigan scored five minutes later. Windsor halfback Drew Dalton scored two converted tries in a 10-minute period to give his side a 12-8 half-time lead.
The Tigers levelled the scores seven minutes after half-time when a cut-out pass from Moore gave Wheele his second try. Three minutes later The Entrance took a 16-12 lead with a try to winger David Djukich that came after a 50m bust from prop Courtney Rolff.

Horo: I'm not panicking but we need to start winning
29May07
ERINA coach Mark Horo did his best to remain upbeat after the Eagles chances of reaching the Jim Beam Cup finals suffered a major blow on Sunday.

The Eagles conceded five tries just before and after half-time and were beaten 48-22 by improving Mounties in Sydney.
The result means the Eagles will face a must-win clash against Wentworthville at Erina Oval on Sunday to keep their finals hopes alive.
``There's no panic yet but we need to start winning games if we're going to be in line for the finals later in the year,'' Horo said.
``This was a game I thought we had a big chance of winning but in the end a lapse in concentration before and after the break was the difference.
``You can't concede five tries in the space of about 20 minutes and win games. It's frustrating but we haven't lost hope of making the finals just yet.''
The Eagles trailed by 16 at the break but three quick tries after the resumption killed off the contest.
``The good thing is we pulled it together and finished well,'' Horo said.
``There's pressure on against Wentworthville, we have to win that one.''
