Jim Beam Cup season preview
SYDNEY BULLS
Coach: David Bayssari
Colours: Red, green, black and white
Home ground: Crest Stadium
Joined competition: 2003
Form guide: 2003 - 3rd (out of 12), 2004 1st (out of 11), 2005 - 2nd (out of 10), 2006 1st (out of 9), 2007 - 2nd (out of 12).
Trial matches: Lost to Chester Hill 24-16 at Crest Stadium, lost to WA Reds 34-22 at NorthBeach.

Losses: Luke Millwood (Newtown), Nathan Ford (Coogee), Khaled Deeb (Newtown), John Koborsi (released), Anthony Mansour (retired), Jason Asplet (retired).
The Sydney Bulls were a touch unlucky not to have collected another trophy last year, losing to The Entrance in the grand final.
Despite losing both trial matches, the Bulls will once again be the side to beat. The return of play-maker Adam Tippett to link up with Steve Jolly will cause havoc for the opposition. The addition of hooker Brett Finn from the Cronulla Sharks will add a new dimension to the side as will tryscoring machine Mark Butler.
WINDSOR WOLVES
Coach: Trent Rosa
Colours: Green and gold
Home ground: WindsorSporting Complex
Joined competition: 2003
Form guide: 2003 - 8th (out of 12), 2004 - 3rd (out of 11), 2005 - 1st (out of 10), 2006 - 5th (out of 9), 2007 - 5th (out of 12).
Trial matches: Beat Wentworthville 34-30 at RingrosePark.
Gains: Craig Trindall (Penrith), Lee Hopkins (Harlequins).
Losses: Anthony Dalton (Mounties), Drew Dalton (Mounties), Brad Clews (released), Denis Boyd (retired), Luke Gordon (Newtown), Brad Parker (released).
The relationship with the Penrith Panthers will work wonders for the Jim Beam Cup as players will aim to get the chance to play at a higher level. The return of Craig Trindall from the Penrith Panthers will see them have a quality playmaker as well as a formidable goal-kicker.
Former NRL player Lee Hopkins has returned to the area after spending the last three years with the London-based Harlequins side in the English Super League.
With the majority of the side backing up again, the Wolves could be collecting another Jim Beam Cup title after winning the competition in 2005.
MOUNTIES
Coach: Steve Ghosn
Colours: Black and gold
Home ground: Mounties Sports Ground
Joined competition: 2007
Form guide: 2007 - 7th (out of 12)
Trial matches: Lost to Western Suburbs 26-10 at Leichhardt Oval, beat NelsonBay 34-26 at NelsonBay.
Gains: Blake Champion (Chester Hill), Drew Dalton (Windsor), Anthony Dalton (Windsor), Anthony Farah (Cessnock), Adam El-Zbadieh (Cessnock), Pat Galea (Western Suburbs), Peter Lett (Group 6), Damian Mostyn (The Grove), Chan Ly (Asquith), Aaron Brown (Seven Hills).
Losses: Mark Butler (Sydney Bulls), Aaron Mercer (retired), Daniel Russell (Gateshead), Blake Blackburn (released), Adam Bennett (Balmain Ryde), Alfred Betham (Wentworthville), Lisala Usasi (Tonga).
The Mounties began the 2007 season on fire but fell apart at the business end of the year. The club has purchased some keen signings including Damian Mostyn, Drew Dalton and Chan Ly.
Coach Steve Ghosn is a smart operator and will make sure that he has the depth to make the semi-finals in 2008. He already has had success with the Windsor Wolves.
WENTWORTHVILLE MAGPIES
Coach: Brett Cook
Colours: Black and white
Home ground: RingrosePark
Joined competition: 2003
Form guide: 2003 - 2nd (out of 12), 2004 - 4th (out of 11), 2005 - 3rd (out of 10), 2006 - 4th (out of 9), 2007 - 4th (out of 12).
Trial matches: Lost to Windsor34-30 at RingrosePark, lost to Chester Hill 32-30 at Crest Stadium.
Gains: Brett Blacker (The Entrance), Alfred Betham (Mounties).
Losses: Adam Capovilla (retired), Kieran Herring (retired), Daniel Bell (retired), Aaron Fluke (Cabramatta), Ammon Frost (retired), Walter Vaeau (released).
Have always been competitive from day one and nothing will change in 2008 despite a number of retirements. The losses of Adam Capovilla, Kieran Herring and Daniel Bell will be a massive loss for the club but they have enough depth to reach the semi-finals.
Ian McCann has stepped down as coach of the Magpies and has been replaced by Brett Cook. The Magpies reached the grand final in the inaugural season of 2003 but have failed at the last hurdle in the past four years. Can the trend change for 2008?
CABRAMATTA
Coach: Len Stacker
Colours: Dark blue, light blue
Home ground: Cabramatta Sports Ground
Joined competition: 2004
Form guide: 2004 - 5th (out of 11), 2005 - 6th (out of 10), 2006 - 3rd (out of 9), 2007 - 3rd (out of 12) Trial matches: Beat Shellharbour 32-26 at?Ron Costello Oval.
Gains: Nathan Carr (Wentworthville), Luke Carr (Guildford).
Losses: Don Thompson (Roosters), Adam Tippet (Sydney Bulls), Matt Gruszka (Brisbane Easts), Phil Takchi (Sydney Bulls), Willie Brown (retired).
Could easily have won the Jim Beam?Cup competition in 2007 but faltered in the major semi-final and preliminary final. Still have a strong squad to worry plenty of sides and should snatch a semi-final spot.
ERINA EAGLES
Coach: Mark Horo
Colours: Red, blue and white
Home ground: Erina Oval
Joined competition: 2003
Form guide: 2003 - 10th (out of 12), 2004 - 7th (out of 11), 2005 - 8th (out of 10), 2006 - 8th (out of 9), 2007 - 8th (out of 12).
Trial matches: Lost 30-0 to Penrith at Windsor Sporting Complex, Drew 6-all with Manly Under 20s at Forrestville Oval
Gains: Mark Meredith (Asquith), Anthony Kiro (Asquith), Jacob Martin (The Entrance), Ryan Cribb (The Entrance), Vita Hemmings (The Entrance).
Losses: Grant Wooden (Thirlmere), Ryan Tubridy (retired), Luke Roberts (released), Rueben Enoka (released), Matt Hunt (North Sydney), Justin Rogers (released), Eddie Hei Hei (released)
The Erina Eagles have never reached the semi-finals and we hope to change that all around in 2008. If they can show the form they produced at the end of the 2007 season, the Eagles could create history. Have picked up some handy signing including Mark Meredith and Anthony Kiro from the Asquith club.
SHELLHARBOUR MARLINS
Coach: David Walsh
Colours: Maroon, gold, blue and white
Home ground: Ron Costello Oval
Joined competition: 2007
Form guide: 2007 - 10th (out of 12).
Trial matches: Beat Campbelltown Eagles 52-6 at Ron Costello Oval, lost to Cabramatta 32-26 at Ron Costello Oval.
Gains: Brad Davison (St George Illawarra), Blake Dureau (Denman), Dixie Harris (New Zealand), Jarrod Roberts (Western Suburbs), Matt Walker (Corrimal).
Losses: Brendan Tunbridge (retired), Lewis McPhail (Gateshead), Kevin Neighbour (Gateshead), Peter Magnone (Gundagai Tigers), Jamie Manukonga (Berkeley), Ben Cole (Collegians).
Struggled in their first season of the competition in 2007 but could be one of the big improvers this season after snaring halves Brad Davison and Blake Dureau.
But the Marlins have lost inspirational skipper Brendan Tunbridge to retirement as well Lewis McPhail and Kevin Neighbour.
The latter two have both decided to head to Englandand play with National League Two side Gateshead Thunder. Could trouble sides at home but if they can win their share of games on the road, could well be in the semi-finals.
BELROSE EAGLES
Coach: Peter Camroux
Colours: Red and gold
Home ground: Lionel Watts Oval
Joined competition: 2005
Form guide: 2005 - 9th (out of 10), 2006 - 7th (out of 9), 2007- 6th (out of 12).
Trial matches: Lost 28-20 to Balmain Ryde-Eastwood at Leichhardt Oval.
Gains: Mailangi Styles (Leigh).
Losses: Richie Plummer (retired), Todd Barrow (Blayney), Matt Forrest (Brisbane Norths), Matt Mirabito (retired), Josh Brown (released).
The Belrose Eagles missed out on reaching the semi-finals by one competition point last year after being in the top five for most of the season.
The Eagles have lost the inspirational Richie Plummer to retirement but have the nucleus of last year’s squad to be very competitive.
CHESTER HILL RHINOS
Coach: Geoff Robinson
Colours: Blue and gold
Home ground: Terry Lamb Reserve
Joined competition: 2007
Form guide: 2007 - 9th (out of 12)
Trial matches: Beat Sydney Bulls 24-16 at Crest Stadium, Beat Wentworthville 32-30 at Crest Stadium.
Gains: Nil
Losses: Nathan Barry (Milton-Ulladulla), Saia Makisi (England), Tinetali Papalii (trialling with Cronulla), Matt Habojen (retired).
Injuries played havoc with the Chester Hill Rhinos in their debut season and they must find the depth in order to be competitive.
If skipper David Thompson can remain injury-free on the field, the Rhinos can win their fair share of matches.
WA REDS
Coach: Chris Dever
Colours: Red, black and grey.
Home ground: Members Equity Stadium
Trial matches: Beat Sydney Bulls 34-22
Joined competition: 2008
Gains: Shayne McMenemy (Hull), Joe Rawlings, Michael Small (Lakes United), Tyrone Coppedge (Souths Logan).
Newcomers WA Reds showed they will be competitive after beating Sydney Bulls 34-22 in a trial match played before a crowd of 1200 at NorthBeach.
The Reds could well be the most supported club in the competition with officials confident they can attract average crowds of 2-3,000 to their home games. The Reds should be able to match it with any club at home but it will be the travelling that could hurt them.
CAMPBELLTOWN EAGLES
Coach: Daniel Draper
Colours: Red and white
Home ground: Campbelltown Stadium
Joined competition: 2008
Trial matches: Lost to Shellharbour Marlins 52-6 at Ron?Costello Oval.
Gains: Jamie Szcerbanik, Stephen Harding, Ben Sauvao,?Ryan Owen (all from Western Suburbs), Paul Neville (Camden Rams).
The Eagles will have to adjust from making the step up from A-grade to the Jim Beam Cup. Like most new clubs in the competition, they will be tested as the season rolls on. They have picked up some handy players from the Western Suburbs Premier League side.
The Eagles might have been beaten well by Shellharbour but were competitive when they fielded their Jim Beam?Cup squad for the first quarter of the game.
SOUTHERN SYDNEY SHARKS
Coach: Luke Goodwin
Colours: Black, white and blue
Home ground: ToyotaPark
Joined competition: 2008
Trial matches: Lost to Cessnock 24-22 at Braddeley.
Gains: Steven Stuart (Kurnell), Phil Green (Gymea)
The club was originally called Cronulla-Caringbah but last minute talks with the New South Wales Rugby League has seen a name change.
The club will still have the same coach, colours and players but will field plenty of players that were involved in the A-grade competition last year.
Former NRL player Luke Goodwin will coach the side and will be hoping that the Sharks can win a few matches from the beginning.
