Joel Monaghan has quit the Canberra Raiders. The disgraced former Test centre is to announce his decision at a press conference at 3pm in the national capital. He will appear alongside Raiders chief executive Don Furner and chairman John McIntrye.
Monaghan's career was left in tatters when a lewd photo of him and teammate's dog was published online last week.
The Canberra board was expected to meet today but it is understood Monaghan decided to hand in his resignation this morning.
The 28-year-old's manager, Jim Banaghan, has already begun sourcing offers from the English Super League and if they are forthcoming he will relocate to the northern hemisphere, where his brother Michael plays for Warrington.
Monaghan had been urged by teammates, chiefly Raiders five-eighth Terry Campese, not to leave the club but his hand has been forced with his position at the Raiders untenable.
It is believed the NRL would have deregistered Monaghan from next year's competition regardless, although it has left open the opportunity for him to return after a spell abroad.
