I don’t agree. If the club views him as a starting 17 player in 2024 and want him on their roster, then they exercise their option. If they don’t then that leaves the player to look elsewhere, exericise his option and play somewhere in the Top 30 OR exercise his option then retire and get paid out.

So my view is that he’s getting $400 x 2 or $400 x 1 + $200 x 1. Whatever the figures, he probably sees his last two years in AU as being averaged out at $300k or whatever per season.

Yep, or what's the point of having two separate options? The club option is to forestall offers from other clubs and the player option is if there is no external interest. Two very different situations, with two different expectations of supply and demand.
