ill Reserve moral opinion on junior until after the court case, but based on his footy he was starting to look really good last year. Bud is still my pick of the young guys, and I was looking forward to he combo. Not sure if either has a boot as good as Zachary Herring seems to.
No it's not. I quoted the policy. He is charged with an offence that carries a maximum term of 11 years or more, so the policy should still apply.

This is incorrect. The police have not dropped any charges. The NRL did not make any assumptions that are wrong. The change is that the prosecutor has opted to try the charge in local court which has a legislated maximum penalty of 2 years for a single charge and 5 years for multiple, no matter what the person is charged with. That doesn't change the fact that he is charged with a crime that has a maximum of 14 years, and if the case moves back to district court he will still be facing that 14 years.
I am sure the NRL could use that logic if they wanted to hold a vindictive approach

There is no need for them to be vindictive to have that approach. It is exactly what the rule states.

Dragons star Amone cleared to play, stand-down rule no longer applies

By Adrian Proszenko, Michael Chammas, Adam Pengilly and Christian Nicolussi

Updated March 7, 2023 — 1.25pm
KEY POINTS
  • Latrell Mitchell is battling a knee problem before the trip to Penrith.
  • Jack de Belin has been ruled out of the Dragons’ first game with a calf injury.
  • The Roosters have lost Victor Radley and Matt Lodge through injury.
  • Dragons forward Toby Couchman will come from the bench for the Dragons.

St George Illawarra playmaker Talatau “Junior” Amone is available for immediate selection after his suspension under the no-fault stand-down policy was lifted.

As revealed by the Herald last week, Amone’s legal representatives petitioned for the NRL to reconsider its stance due to the way his case will now be prosecuted.

Dragons stand by Amone despite alleged assault

Talatau 'Junior' Amone's Dragons teammates have his back even though he could still be stood down by the NRL.
Amone has been unavailable for selection since he was charged over an alleged hammer attack on a roofing contractor in November. The case of the Dragons five-eighth – who was charged with reckless grievous bodily harm in company, destroying property and intimidation – was mentioned in Wollongong Local Court on last Wednesday.
Under the NRL’s rules, players charged with an offence carrying a maximum prison term of 11 years or more are automatically stood down until their court proceedings are finalised.

That was initially the case for Amone, who was facing the prospect of being behind bars for up to 14 years if the more serious grievous bodily harm charge was dealt with in the district court.
However, the matter will be prosecuted in the local court, where the maximum sentence available for the charge is just two years. Even if convicted of all charges, the maximum sentence available to the court is now only five years.

The NRL declared he is available selection for selection ahead of the Dragons naming their team for the first game against the Gold Coast.

Totally agree ......
Me too! But in saying this, it is good that we have an extra half to choose from for at least a while until the case goes to court later this year or whenever it is heard.

Amone did play well against the Titans late last year so who knows, Hook might play him this weekend as a "show of strength". I hope not though as I would like Sullivan to show what he has for at least a half dozen games and if very good, keep him there.

Well the genie is now well and truly out of the bottle and yet again the NRL have well and truly f**ked us over.

The media will be all over us criticising us no matter what team gets selected as they will argue both sides of the fence.

We should be able to send Turner back to the Titans if we so desire as that decision was made under duress and in light of the arbitrary decision making nature of the NRL.

OK. The NRL will have to revise the policy as it's no longer the maximum sentence applicable to the charge but the maximum sentence available to the court in which the case will be tried. Pedantic stuff I know, but the point is that the NRL established the policy and is applying it quite arbitrarily. Clubs need to know what the actual policy is because 1st grade players are very expensive assets and investments. The policy shouldn't be so unclear that a player is 100% out one week and 100% back in the next week. I really think it is a mistake for the NRL to wade into legal judgment territory. Why not leave it to the courts? If a guy is found guilty of a serious crime and is given time in the big house then he'll be removed from the game anyway.

The conduct that lead to his charges. Even if found not guilty it is hard to imagine why he behaved so aggressively. Antisocial behaviour unbecoming of a representative of our club.
So you are assuming hes guilty of the charges before a courts findings? Can you even say that you are sure it was Amone? Can you be sure that if it was him that his actions couldnt be justified?. You want to punish someone that you have no actual proof that he has erred. If he is found not guilty im sure the court will be privy to why the matter turned violent and the reasons behind it. Until then we dont know and he shouldnt be punished unless there is a finding of guilt.

Until we know the full story let’s let it rest.
I agree. I think that we cool things down with this Amone matter and let things take the right course of proceedings and whatever the outcome, then it can be open for discussion again sometime in the future.

Amone is cleared to play, let's be grateful that something positive has happened for us for a change. He is developing well as a player, let him continue to play now and leave it at that.
