Hey Laggy - explain to me again how Tamou will have an additional $30k of net disposable income at the end of this series.

Are the test matches not taxed in your vision Grimes? Just origin?

Clearly it is an additional 30 K presently disposable pre tax...

With a post retirement kitty.

What exactly do you find so tough to understand?

This whole discussion is a bit strange. I don't ever remember getting a job where a boss has quoted me a salary in after tax dollars,
Exactly. Only Grimes lives in that world!

It can't be ALL about money. Some of it has to be for self promotion for future contract propositions,
That is still money...

Self promotion : see yourself as a business: books, public speaking, endorsements : money

Future contracts : money

Future prospects is about money, sure. But playing Origin also brings some respect and prestige among your peers.

If you think foreigners or even people playing for the "wrong" state in Origin did not factor in money as a primary choice or reason, then you're an idealist.

They are professional ballers. Playing football is how they make their money. Get real.

If rep fixtures were unpaid, you may, and I mean only MAY (due to non direct additional fiscal bonuses of being an Australian League hero as opposed a Kiwi one), have an argument.

But while the origin payments are so much greater than tests... get real.

Calling the interstate series, STATE of ORIGIN

i think its all exaggerated.

tamou was lower grades at the roosters, kasiano played in qld when younger, inglis played in the qld colts comp at 17.

sounds about right to me

Seems to me its grossly unfair SOO benefits from the popularity of the week-to-week competition. Yet alot of those players who help to make the game what it is wont receive the financial gain based purely on what nation they play for.

I'm not arguing with you regarding financial reasons as being a major part of why a player chooses to play where, and for who they do, because I agree with you. All I'm saying is that it's not the only reason, and that the prestige of playing at that level, and being good enough to be picked and to show people so, is surely a big part of it too.

QLD will pick Kasiano, not because he is the best option, but because they secure his rights for his career, thus making him eligible for QLD/Australia for his career.

QLD will pick Kasiano, not because he is the best option, but because they secure his rights for his career, thus making him eligible for QLD/Australia for his career.

And at this stage Kasiano would be a fool to accept this because he's far more likely to play more matches for New Zealand than he would be for Qld and Australia combined, an unlikely course of events not permitting.

As I said in the other thread;

Being eligible for State of Origin shouldn't exclude you from representing your country of birth. It's possible to be a New Zealand born Queenslander (it's actually downright common) just like it's possible to be an England born New South Welshman and these players should be allowed to represent the state that they've spent a portion of their life in as well as the country in which their heritage lies. In the case of a hypothetical New Zealand born footballer that moved to Woodridge at the age of 14 and played junior footy there, nominating for Qld at the age of 23 (when he has spent a lot of his life in Qld) should be encouraged, not at the sacrifice of him representing a country that he would have more allegiance to than Australia.

So big James Tamou will pocket about 15 grand in hand after this series, less expenses.

The NZRL match payments must be small if it is all about the money for these Kiwis.

Yep......kinda shoots down that theory that NZ players are only in it for the money

So, in conclusion, Australia>NZ

Exactly. NZ players quite clearly are being swayed to abandon the NZ flag not purely by money.

There is also the prestige of playing in the worlds greatest games of RL ........SOO

I was just watching 'The Back Page'. Paul Kent came up with a simple yet good solution for players who want to change allegiances. Declare you want to change, and then you have to sit out two years off rep footy. It separate those who are fair dinkum from those who aren't.

You should not be able to switch. Once you represent a country you should stick with them for your career!

Wouldn't change the current Tamou or Kasiano situation though would it.

You're spot on. I can't blame either of those two, even if they want it for money. But I just like what Kent said because it was so simple.

Yeah agreed that would be a step in the right direction but I agree with hutch that you shouldn't be able to switch at all.
