Knights Lower Grade Stuff

No one named stands out as "snatching" a first grade spot unfortunately. Clune, Hodgson & Lucas will probably get a run at some stage due to injury. Didn't see anything to get excited about with Tupouniua or Hollis in the trials but won't have much choice if there's a few injuries early. Maybe a good start to the season could put Wainohu-Kemp in the frame if they end up letting Dom go but he was still very raw last year.

Chris Vea'ila being beaten out by a 115kg local league player isn't great either.

There's only one bloke in the entire squad that I saw that went out and made a bit of a statement in the trials - and that was Lachie Miller. Clearly had worked his ass off and had a point to prove. The rest of them had a real air of "ah shit, not this again" about them - coupled with confusion about what anyone is supposed to be doing.

I can't see any juniors that are banging the door down and demanding selection. It's so troubling.

How’s the hooker Rugless? I thought Huth was a shining light last year and on the verge of FG.

Haven't watched enough of Rugless to have a real opinion on him. Didn't stand out in the 2 or 3 games I saw.

Marzhew and Gamble left out of both grades is very weird

Edit: Apparently Marzhew has a hip pointer injury

Gamble is in the reserves list for first grade but not reggies, same with Johns. Cup plays in Auckland the next day so probably just not worth making the flight late Friday night or Saturday morning and then playing same day. The other 3 reserves are named so clearly a conscious decision.

So Johns is 18th man and Gamble is backup 18th Man, surely if Gamble or Johns not required they could then play Cup on Sat, assume all travel over and back together.

Gamble & Johns will be with the first grade squad in Wellington and the other 3 will be with the reserve grade squad in Auckland.

Is Clune really as bad as he appeared last year? He battled that knee injury for a long time and you could tell it really hampered him. Obviously would've been painful to run but that had to really affect his mental psych with other things like general kicking etc.

Not calling for him to be in firsts or anything, but probably as good of a backup half as you will get.

Clune has everything you'd want in a halfback except size. He gets monstered in defence

Yes I know there have been tiny halves before but the game has changed since then.

if Clune was built like Hastings he would be in the origin conversation. He is as skilful as they get. Just so undersized.
