English players very rarely succeed outside of England.

He'll be the next Beckham, leaving home will be the worst thing for his career.

LOL

To be fair Owen was statistically Franco's best striker. Steve McManaman did alright in the pre-Galactico era too. Not that either of them are relevant to how a Welsh player will perform though lol

Has there even been 10 prominent English players move outside of Britain in the last decade? Not some pension chasing move to the A-league, MLS, Middle East but genuine transfers.

You'd have to go back and include the 90's to get a decent list going.

Yeah outside of Beckham and Owen, you have to go back to the days of Paul Gascoigne and Chris Waddle as far as world class English players plying their trade overseas.

And before them there were the likes of Trevor Francis and Gary Lineker. Keegan was an absolute beast in Germany but we're going back to the 70s now!

Ironically, an actual Welshman who did play overseas was John Charles. One of the best players of all-time and was voted Juventus' greatest ever import - not bad when that list also includes Platini and Zidane.

British players generally don't play overseas in their prime. They're an especially odd bunch who don't put themselves out there when it comes to adapting to other cultures.

I'm honoured that you're always thinking of me.

Bale was immense last season. He basically single handedly led Spurs to 5th in by far the most competitive league in the world. Without him they would have finished about 12th.

Based on last years form alone he was clearly one of the top 5 performing players in the world.

3rd best was a stretch. I got a little excited but I have the balls to admit it. I should also have paid more credence to the fact that one season doesn't make a career.

As such Ozil is clearly a better player because he has performed for many years at multiple clubs. The way he has immediately adapted to Arsenal is the sign of a pure genius.

Nobody gets it right all the time. I got carried away on Bale. But, make no mistake about it he is a sensational player. I just doubt his ability to adapt to another country and handle the pressure of being the 100million man at a club like Real.
I agree, it's one thing being the best player at spurs, and the best player for Wales, both teams aren't expected to win every time they step on the pitch, and like you said being the most expensive player ever carries a whole new burden.

Where are the Bale haters now ?

Pulled off an absolutely stunning display. He is back to his trademark self again with 2 goals and 2 assists. Also won man of the match.

I dont get why people question his ability. He was always a good player. It just takes time to adjust from the EPL to La Liga and on top of that he had not pre season and on top of that he has been battling injuries.

Hope he continues to showcase his abilities.

they showed all of Madrid's goal and not one of Sevilles

Bale and Ronnie gave the poor Seville LB nightmares all game. Bale would have his way with him for 10, then he and Ronaldo would switch sides for a bit so Ronaldo could have some fun. Poor bastard even palmed bales free kick into the top corner haha

Such a fun game to watch as a neutral.

Rakitic scored a cracker. Was easily Seville best. Despite the score they gave arbeloa a hell of a time for most of the night.

Most of the comments I've read regarding Bale aren't questioning his ability, rather questioning the amount that Real Madrid paid for him.

Tearing it up against a team coming last and a Sevilla side that has seen better days is still not proof that he's a world class player.

Scoring 2 goals and 4 assists in 2 games is a solid effort regardless of what team you are playing. Your comment may be true to some extent but the manner in which he tore defenders up out wide shows that he does have world class qualities about him.

I guess you can decide for yourself tomorow if he is a world class player when he comes up against Juventus tomorow morning.

He's obviously got some world class qualities, he cost them €100m, even if it's twice as much as his true value, anyone worth €50m has still got to be world class
