absolutely positively rediculous. Its illegality is a joke and this approach is a joke.

should they get a 2 year ban for drinking alcohol as well?

My thoughts exactly.

I'd rather see a ban on players drinking during the season first.

Alcohol causes more damage than smoking pot...both to your body and to others (fights, lewd phone calls from cabs, players defacting in shoes and pissing in casinos, sexual assualt...the list goes on).

having had had close friend as a daily weed smoker i can say with great authority that it eventually scatters their friggin brains. And sure, i don't give a f**k what ppl do in the privacy of their own homes, but when it comes to signing a rugby league contract, i want to know that the players in my fav team are giving their all, not becoming aggro because they can't wait to get another hit of the wakky tobakky..............

Sure...but how about players who go a bit aggro on the turps.

Who's to say that players while doing those acts werent affected by pot aswell?

I drink beer and have never done any of those things youve mentioned, so why ban something thats not illegal when only a small percentage of players shouldnt drink. Maybe clubs should have a ban on alcohol for players who have a history of turning into criminals when drunk.

As for pot. I would think clubs wouldnt want their players to smoke it, so they wont complain about the NRL being the enforcer with thi issue.

hmmmm my question is whether a high profile rep player would be banned if caught out or would it be swept under the carpet....

and if half the team got done, the nrl/team management would ' sacrifice' one player to the media-scott wilson knows

Mate, from someone who's been known to smoke pot, I can honestly say that people who smoke are more likely to want to sit down and watch TV than go out and cause trouble. Give a very drunk man a toke on a joint and he'd probably fall asleep.

I think its more of an issue to be sorted out by the clubs rather than the NRL. A 2 year ban is a bit of a joke....besides, as mentioned it stays in your system for ages so anyone caught in a test is a bit of an idiot.

Professional athletes know this and I would be very surprised if many actually smoke.

Perhaps because it's illegal? Toovs should have a good hard look at himself if he thinks it's ok to use illicit drugs.

The NRL has no business handing out penalties to players committing illegal acts in the privacy of their own home.

Recording TV shows on a video recorder is illegal, buying pirated CDs & DVDs is illiegal. Do the NRL see it as their duty to impose penalties on any player that may be involved in these activities too?

Marijuana is performance destructive. If a player is stupid enough to indulge with the occasion bong, thereby reducing the quality of their performance & ultimately jeopardising their career, then that is punishment in its own right.

On the other, I can totally understand a club suspending, fining, or sacking a player caught using pot. As the players employer they have the right to expect that player to turn up for work in a condition where they are able to perform at optimum levels.

or puke his guts up, in my observation...

And I know 2 high profile solicitors and an orthopaedic surgeon who are daily ganja smokers and have been for years. Hell, half of my Law faculty smoked and the other half were p*ssheads. Like any substance, it affects different people differently. You have very little authority.

not becoming aggro because they can't wait to get another hit of the wakky tobakky..............

it isn't heroin dude. or alcohol.

Exactly. Its not as if players are walking down the street in their club jersey passing a blunt between them.

Fully agree. When I did my engineering degree, if you didn't do any drugs you were in a minority. Not that there was any peer pressure to do them or anything...just the type of people who did my course. At my work there are plenty of professional people who don't think twice about indulging on a friday or saturday night.

Moderation.....key word people.

I wonder how many players fail in house drug tests? The whole thing is very hypocritical. It's either zero tolerance for recreation drugs or nothing. The incident at Souths in 1990 was the biggest load of bullsh*t, ever. The NSWRL were coping money from a cigarette company and went on this high moral stance of saying the game is clean of drugs. Then they visit Souths and found a heap of their lower grade aboriginal players with marijuana positives. 12 months later the NSWRL got caught out covering up an International player’s positive test.

Most???

Not really...depends on what industry you work in. Forklift driver...meat worker...perhaps.

If they tested for drugs in my division there would be about 20 people laid off.

There's still a lot of legal business with testing for drugs. Have you seen the Mythbusters episode where they eat a fair bit of poppy seed cake and bread and still test positive for opiates a couple of days afterwards?

Most employers do not test for pot these days, or any drugs for that matter. Not unless you live in America, or you want to be in the defence force.

bullsh*t.

maybe if you're going to work in the freezing works or some sh*t where you're dealing with knives...

Anyway this is a complete load of bullsh*t by the NRL. It's none of their business if players are at home chillin on their couches..hittin the bong and playing playstation.

Legalize it.

Hmmm...all the pot smokers come out and act self-righteous.

That'd be right.

It's an illegal act, and drug use does not belong in sport or amongst sportspeople. End of story.
