Tigers have only just started chasing him now that the missed Mitchell. They like us are struggling for recruits. Who else was chasing him? He did flop in 2010, and last year he missed a chance to win the game. Obviously this was only one moment but that is a centres bread and butter. Should the forum be shut down? No it’s fine to discuss our team and be armchair coaches from time to time but it’s also worth acknowledging that first grade coaches including Mary know more about NRL than anyone on this forum. If the Tigers are the only club chasing and the Raiders are willing to pay for him to leave what more needs to be said?
He wasn’t even available. He broke a contract to move. Had he been off contract I’m sure there would have been more interest.
Agreed that he was terrible in 2010. But come on. He was an absolute rookie who was playing against Gasnier and Nighty at their peak.
At the end of the day I’m not even sure I would want to recruit him, but I think you’re being incredibly unfair. BJ is an enigmatic player, which is important to a squad. You can’t have too many, and they need to get a good feel for the team, but they are important. One of the reasons we have struggled these past few years is that we have lacked a player of his style; someone that creates in an unpredictable way.
One of the reasons that Canberra got as far as they did last year was off the back of BJ’s work. They focused their game around their 9, had a 6 whose first option is to run, and had a running fullback. Their half was a kickbot, so the only real creativity down the right came from BJ and Bateman.
And I still don’t get your argument about NRL coaches knowing more than the punters. I mean, of course you’re probably right, but does that mean that I get to invoke McGuire agreeing with me to validate my argument?
