Nah, the initiative itself seems to be good intentioned.

It was a bit surprising thats all, and probably not the best sign of the current Knights membership renewal numbers.

It would be interesting if the Knights made public the increase/decrease of season ticket numbers from 2008 to 2009...

Here is an idea for entertainment:

Go to the game with a bunch of your mates, and socialise while there are breaks in play. If everyone did this again, the games would be an event, and people would keep coming back.

I remember sitting on the 50, and you knew everyone who sat around you. Now you sit in the same seat all season, and most people wouldnt know the first thing about the guy who sits next to them.

Or join the Crusade. We have no problems keeping ourselves amused during breaks.

I still don't know why people don't bring their food or buy a cheap macca's meal instead.

Alot of people already do that lizziebra. I've often seen people with Maccas bags and Subways. I usually get my food at Everleigh's Pies opposite EAS. As I keep saying to those who bellyache about food prices. Nobody forces you to buy food there.

I bring my own food.

I have the brain of a five year old though. I need half time entertainment in the form of semi naked women..... otherwise I will get bored and become annoying to those around me.

The best halftime entertainment i've seen was way back in the first few years when they had about 30 guys dressed up in armour with real looking weapons walk out - then proceed to bash the hell out of each other.
It was pretty realistic - the weapons might have been blunted etc, but they relied on there armour for protection and were really bashing each other.

Re-Vamped Entertainment

Kyla Banks
Thursday, March 26, 2009

‘THRILL’ and ‘excitement’ are the words to describe the Knights’ on-field entertainment in 2009.

This year, Knights fans will be amazed by the array of new talent on show, including a unique display by a new-look cheer squad.

The squad will be comprised of two teams – a ‘Stunt Squad’ and a ‘Dance Troop’, who will perform both before the game and at half time.

Knights Promotion and Events Manager, Rob Vanderveer said the aim of this year’s squad is to offer exciting entertainment for the whole family.

"We really want to thrill the crowd with some of our stunting,” he said.

“We just wanted to show Newcastle that while we have some really talented football players, we also have some really great dancers.”

This year’s auditions proved popular with over 90 girls attending.

After a gruelling two-day audition process, just 32 girls were chosen for the squads.

Vanderveer said the process ensures that all girls are skilled in dance, have stunting ability and all fit well with the style of cheerleading at the Knights.

“Virtually what happens is on the first night of auditions, they come along with a 30 second routine of their choice and the judges score them on their individual ability.”

“The girls then get taught about a minute-and-a-half’s worth of choreography; the purpose of that being to find out which of the girls can actually pick up cheer choreography and which girls have the ability to match with our style.

“The second evening is to test their stunting ability because obviously some of them need to learn how to become throwers and lifters and backstops.

“Everybody has to be skilled enough to perform in the stunt squad,” he said.

A strong gymnastics, dance or aerobic background is considered necessary for successful applicants.

This year’s team will also be carrying a few familiar faces with 16 girls returning from last season and two ex-cheerleaders providing coaching and choreography.

Stunt squad coach Michelle Fleming has six years experience as a Knights cheerleader, while dance squad choreographer, Dominique Hipworth was on the team for five seasons.

Miss Hipworth’s dance studio, 5,6,7,8 Academy of Dance, is also a sponsor of the squad this year.

Vanderveer said being part of the Knights cheer squad involves a great deal of commitment.

“Basically the girls train two nights a week, and then obviously they do a ‘touch-up’ for the routine on match day as well,” he said.

“They train between four to six hours per week, so it’s a much bigger commitment than people see on the field.”

This year, the cheerleaders will also be involved in many events and activities outside of match day, including the ‘Hunter’s Biggest Barbeque’ and various community activities.

Vanderveer said the girls are just about to start their involvement in charity work.

“This year girls are going to be involved with the Starlight Foundation and the Hunter Breast Cancer Foundation.”

“These girls are committed.”

One thing’s for certain, 2009 will be a year Knights fans do not want to miss.

F*ck that press release made me laugh literally out loud.

' Excitement ' and ' thrill '...

' Amazed at the array of new talent '... What kinda talent exactly hey hey? ;-)

I'll go on the record now and say if anyone who goes to the matches this year actually get 'thrilled ' at the entertainment which will be on offer, you really need to liven up the rest of your life

Credit to them for actually making an effort to improve though.

Well, comparitively with last year, I'm assuming more 17-18+ year olds and a few less 14 or under year olds ;-)

Well to me, thats a good start already surely!

Or you can just head down to Newcastle beach for free?

Oh dear, if the Knights think that ' matchday entertainment ' is a couple of 2 minute routines performed by dancers and acrobats and gymnasts is all that is required to pass as exciting and thrilling entertainment, then Mr Vanderveer might want to take another quick look ' around the grounds ' at some of the other teams

Lets give it the benefit of the doubt until we see how it is this year.

Only just over a week to go now.

Seeing what new and unique way the Knights can possibly f*ck up their entertainment and make it worse year to year ( and in some cases get even worse as the year goes on ) is almost worth the price of season tickets alone.

Thats the entertaining part.

What, drummer boys at Souffs games for example? :|

And besides, cheerleaders are part and parcel of just about every NRL teams "entertainment" whether you like it or not ;-)

No , I like it - don't get me wrong.

Cheerleaders, proper ones ( not the prepubescent variety ) should be MANDATORY!

I'm just saying, that alot of us sit at the game for hours. And there's big gaps between games now, and in order for the Knights to improve their entertainment to thrill and excite us, they'll need more than to ramp up some cheerleaders who perform for what, 3 minutes at best?

Let's give season ticket holders and people who pay $$ for a day out some value for their money!

I dunno if anyone watched the end of the Footy Show last night. But there were those 3 guys doing a parody of popular songs which are written to the same chord sequence. I loved it, very clever. Whats stopping the Knights getting something like that at the games?

Its not like they are at the same cost as U2 or Coldplay.

I saw those guys at the end of the footy show last night actually and I thought it was very clever. I spose there's nothing really stopping the Knights from having something similar, along with the cheerleaders doing their thing to said songs. Keep them out there for half an hour :p
