Thank f**k for that. No excuses now why we shouldn't be able to buy some decent players. I've got my preferred options (Mertesacker, Sakho, Parker, Gotze), but to be quite honest I would be happy with ANY of the players we have being linked to.

Some light at the end of the tunnel lads! I'm a bit concerned about this article though.

http://www.caughtoffside.com/2011/0...rsie-in-furious-bust-up-over-transfer-policy/

Furious bust up eh? They were interviewed after the game seperately. Wenger said in true manager speak, we will see. RvP said we need some new players.

Obviously, United should put a cheeky 20 million bid in for RvP, cause he is a great player...

Still on Sunday, you are going up against a team of youngsters, with 3/4 of the back line missing, and whose first choice mid and forwards are coming back, so you will surely be disappointed with anything other than a win. ;-)

Garbage article - if anyone wants a definition of media beat up, you have it right there. Unfortunately I've been at Uni since 8 and had to rely on The Guardian's text updates for the game this morning. Which result in me severely breaking morning commuter train etiquette by jumping up and fist pumping after Chezzy saved that penalty.

Heh, yes and you're going to be against a team who have just sold their two best midfielders (and LB) without signing any replacements, who is missing four other 'first team 'midfielders, a LB, a winger, playing a RB out of position and having a youngster make his second EPL appearance against the reigning champions.

Rather easy task for sure.;-)

I actually saw the interviews on telly, and thought nothing of it. Wierd you listening to a game on a morning commute and i was watching it on telly with a beer in my hand!!

You can't use players sold as an excuse, thats the managers decision. We are wthout our 80million goal scoring machine upfront. Also if Wilshire was fit then Frimpong wouldn't play anyway, so your not having him either. From your first 11, how many people are actually missing.

For United using the end of last season as a guide its:
De Gea
Evra
Raphael
Rio
Vidic
Young
Fletcher
Carrick
Valencia
Rooney
Chico

Bold are injured, italics are coming back from injury so not match sharp and probably won't play. So thats Evra and Rooney with experience for United and a load of other players who are learning how its done.

Should be a cracker, a lot of players trying to get themselves a reputation. :D

Gotta love timezones..;-)

I wasn't even able to listen to it. The mobile reception on the way to Sydney from my way is average at best so it was The Guardian's website or nothing.

True, true. I was clutching at absolute straws and you're right about Frimpong. Thankfully though Djourou is fit so we wont see Miquel, or even worse, Squillaci playing unless an injury occurs.

It'll be interesting to see if Arsene players Sagna at LB again. Traore hasn't featured yet and has only just come back from injury.

It should be a decent game though. A lot of youngsters vying for recognition. A 12:30am kickoff here, it could be worse.

It's been a bastard of a summer but Arsenal fans need to start walking with a swagger again.

We drew IMO 2 of the easiest Pot 2 and Pot 3 teams. Yes we drew the German champions, but Germany is a mediocre league, Tottenham/Liverpool would be contenders there.

We are going to win our group.

We are going to make multiple big signings before the window is out. We will contend for the league title.

Where can I get some of your optimism? I like to view myself as an optimist, but your glass is overflowing!

You highly undervalue the difficulty of our group. The Bundesliga is the most even, competitive league in Europe. Dortmund would challenge any club side in the world. They're a very, very good side.

Marseille are one of the best and most consistent teams in France, with some very handy players. Olympiakos are no mugs either.

Without doubt, we have the second most difficult group after Group A.

Barcelona, Manchester United, Manchester City, Real Madrid, Chelsea.

Those are the only clubs on the planet that I'm not confident about beating on a regular basis.

IMO we'd be champions in Italy, Germany and France. I don't respect those leagues, they have no truly outstanding teams.

I'd go as far as saying if we sign who I think we're going to sign this week, I actually think we'll be closer to Chelsea and Real Madrid and Man U than we were last season.

From our first few competitive games this season I've actually seen plenty of very exciting signs.

Szczesny is world class. He cost us 500k, De Gea cost United something like 20 million. I guarantee Szczesny has the better season and the better career. A 15 year keeper for us. He's 20 years old and has the maturity and swagger and confidence than you need of a top class keeper. All that plus outstanding ability = potentially the best keeper in the world.

Walcott is finally showing finishing ability. If he shows that consistently he becomes a threat as a striker as well as a winger and makes the move to the next level he's been threatening to do for the last 3 years.

Gervinho has also proven he's worth so much more than the 10 million or so we got him for. Superb talent. Jenkinson and Frimpong have also shown they have what it takes.

I'm predicting Szczesny, Walcott and Ramsey to do what Wilshere did last year and become legit world class players. Throw in the development of the others I mentioned, plus the 2 at least and most likely 3 top tier players we're going to buy this week and we will have a better and deeper squad than we had last year.

I know a lot of our fans have lost confidence about the loss of Fabregas and Nasri but let's put into perspective what they really contributed to us. A combined 9 seasons of losing. Nasri was only a top player for 6 months for us. Fabregas was never the leader we needed him to be. Van Persie is a better captain...even Wilshere has shown more leadership than Fabregas did.

With Fabregas as our captain over and over we got deep into tournaments and contended in the final months of the league every year, and over and over we failed. Look how he went to pieces against Barcelona when we were in a position to beat them.

I don't understand why our fans are so depressed at the breakup of a losing team? We have the money to make up for the loss of talent, we are developing mentally stronger players than the ones we just lost. We're going to be better this year than we were last year.

Each to their own, but I highly disagree. Are you saying our 2010/2011 squad would be champions, or the existing squad?

I'd hardly say that Wilshere is "World Class". I hate how that term gets thrown around nowadays. The only player we have that is anywhere near "World Class" is RvP. If he wasn't so injury prone, he'd be considered in the top five strikers in the world.

I will agree that Chezzy and Ramsey, unless they suffer a bad injury, will have a standout season. Ramsey and Wilshere will be the nucleus of our squad for at least the next five years. Both have the potential to be included within the best midfielders in the league, if not the world.

I know a lot of our fans have lost confidence about the loss of Fabregas and Nasri but let's put into perspective what they really contributed to us. A combined 9 seasons of losing. I will agree there too. Fabregas was never captain material. He was only given the armband because Gallas was a sook and RvP wasn't playing enough consistent football. Personally, I'd prefer Vermaelen over RvP as captain. But, Robin was next in line and is our longest serving player, it was only fair.

I don't understand why our fans are so depressed at the breakup of a losing team? We have the money to make up for the loss of talent, we are developing mentally stronger players than the ones we just lost. We're going to be better this year than we were last year.

I don't necessarily think it's because three players have been sold. I think this offseason has been our most productive in years. Merely because a lot of deadwood has either been sold, or close to being sold. Denilson and Eboue have gone, Almunia will never play for the first team again and Bendtner is on the shopping list.

I assume that in the context of being a 'Big Four' club in England, and one of the top ten clubs in Europe, Arsenal has been too quiet when compared to our rivals. Which is what upsets the fans. It can be interpreted as a lack of ambition by the club. Especially when Arsene said that selling Nasri and Fabregas would mean that we are no longer "a big club".

Wenger made a mistake in what he said about us not being a big club.

United lost Ronaldo and Beckham, now they're as good as ever. Big clubs lose big players routinely. It's what you do about it that decides whether you're still a big club.

If we sign the players we should sign this week, we won't miss the players we lost.

And about Wilshere, they're basically building England's future midfield around him. Capello at one point has even talked about England using the formation that best suits Wilshere. He's the best player England has produced since Rooney, and he'll be carrying the entire countrys burden of expecation on his shoulders for the next decade. I agree the term 'world class player' is overused, but IMO it's fair to describe him that way.

Potentially World Class yes, but right now, not quite.

I just hope the club doesn't run him into the ground like they did with Fabregas. Players that young should not be playing 50+ games a year.

Just look how screwed Cesc is with both his hamstrings now. He rarely played more than four or five games in a row last season.

Agreed about his workload. Our key players like him really shouldn't play any Carling Cup before the final and any FA cup before the quarters.

And he should be rotated in league and champions league matches whenever possible. Hopefully we buy Hazard and Kaka/Sneijder and have a solid midfield rotation of Wilshere, Ramsey, Hazard, Kaka/Sneijder, Song and Frimpong to lighten the load for Jack.

Considering we only payed Fabregas under 100,000 per week, I doubt Wenger would pay 155,000 a week for Kaka and 200,000 a week for Sneijder ontop of the transfer fee. Although we were rumoured to have offered Nasri 120,000? It makes 155,000 for Kaka seem feasible.

I don't mean both Kaka and Sneijder. I meant Hazard and one of those two. They overlap and getting both would be overkill, but with the 200k a week wages off the books with the sales of Fabregas and Nasri, we can afford one of them.
