As a Zeppelin freak Bonham is the man. In 1975 and 1977 he held that band together when the egos and the drugs completely went nuts.

Listen to him on any tape you can find playing behind Page on Achilles Last Stand or The Song Remains the Same in that era.

The man is a freak because he had to be. Bonham played drums and you heard them. Name another.

f**k the intricacies and art.

John Bonham was the Hammer of the Gods!

Yep my dad played drums for bands from the 60s to the 90s and he said no one hit the skins like Bonham did. He pretty much invented hard rock/heavy metal drumming. Not bad for a bloke who was picked from obscurity because he happened to be a friend of a friend of Plant.

Meg White.

Reminds all of us mediocre musicians that no matter how terrible you are, if you cling to someone with talent you could still earn yourself millions.

I relly dont know how Urlich got where he is, he reminds me a lot of Ringo

a 10 year old kid can replicate his drum beats and I dare say alot of 8 year olds

he must have just been in the right place at the right time, if you compare him with some one as complex as Carey or Mangini its like they play a different instrument

It baffles me how he got to where he is tbh...I mean, he both sucks and blows...

But in all seriousness, Lars Ulrich is a terrible, terrible drummer. Awful, awful man.

Again...Lars f**king Ulrich...

As a non-drummer I really don't understand the Lars hate. From the intro roll in Hit The Lights to the last riff of The Struggle Within I fail to think of a moment where I've ever thought 'man, the drums there are sooo $hit'.

I can't just insult Lars from then on as everything the band did sounded $hit after black.

Bonzo was the greatest exponent of triplets and parradiddles which you wont hear now days due to everyone using double kicks.

For the non drummers, you can only use one foot pedal when playing triplets. Left hand right hand then foot pedal, and keep repeating, he played alot of triplets in Moby Dick, his drum solo, then he'd put the sticks down and play by hand.

His stuff is not hard to play, its just that he was an original. There will never be another Bonzo.

Nicko from Iron Maiden is a single kick drummer and also uses a lot of those techniques, his drumming is really nimble and intricate and is an often overlooked part of what makes Maiden's sound.

But I agree the predominance of double kick has led to the demise of a lot of single-foot technique in rock/metal.

Matt Cameron is hypnotic on the skins.

lol@Ringo

Does anyone else remember those rumours about John, Paul and George telling Ringo that it was a wrap for the day at their recording sessions, then waiting for him to leave, and secretly bringing in another drummer to actually lay some tracks?

On 'The Ballad of John and Yoko' wasnt it only John and Paul who recorded it?
My moneys on Mccartney playing drums on that one.
Very similar to the drum style on the McCartney album recorded a couple of years later.

Foo Fighters did that with Color and the Shape, except Dave just re-recorded the drum tracks.

Phil D Fisher from Fishbone rates a mention... The ~40 second outro on the album version of their metal infused song Servitude still gives me thrills 30 years after it was recorded.... And then 2 tracks later on the same album, his work on Jamaican ska-themed Unyielding Condition showcases his versatility... Jazz, funk, metal, soul - he's top drawer across almost any genre...
