A salary cap Rortt for sure, the NRL won't have the balls to look into it though..

And how exactly would the NRL go about 'looking into' this allegation? Hmm? Whats that? Connect gaz up to a lie detector and ask if he intended to stay a full 4 years?!

The $50k deal to come back mid season last year stunk , but it stinks even more now . Was bearable to a degree when the dragons had to then accommodate a marquee signing for 3 years at overs money ...but the deal has exposed a massive loophole now .NRL should act . I put it that he was never going to play for the full "contract" and he ,his manager and Doust "knew" it . Something is not right that he would walk away from $1.2 million ++ for a couple of fading years . This deal must be investigated imo .

Spot on, cap issue" has to be.

Exactly, whats to stop the Tigers resigning Benji on 50k for the next 8 years with the following years worth 1.2m each, or Cows with JT or Storm with Smith or any team with their best player....

I'd be putting some money on Gaz to be a backs coach next year and stand to collect the same amount of coin as he would have on the field.

This was the very first thing i thought of, if i recall correctly he was only allowed to have such a small contract last and this year because he had such a big back half to his contract. Now said backhalf doesn't exist.

Gasnier had been out of the NRL long enough to warrant less money when he came back. He was playing a sub standard sport in a joke league in a weak footy country before he came back. No way was he coming back and getting $400k straight up. He may not have got a second year if he was complete crap when he got back.

Anyway they've got some money to spend now. Josh Dugan money I'd say.

He had a backended contract and it should be honoured and there's nothing you can say to change that

How is it salary cap rorting if a player signs for $50000 on a backended contract and then retires? His 2010 and 2011 salary would be included in the cap as would his later payments if the dragons pay out his contract. If they don't pay out his contract its not included.

The fact that Gasnier signed for the dragons for $50000 is moot. The salary cap governs players salaries, not what people think players are worth.

As I said from what I remember the dragons could only fit him in by heavily back ending the contract. As in the NRL would only let him sign if he had a heavy back end to his contract because the start of his contract wasn't big enough to cover minimum wage in 2010.

Most people would agree with me that if he retires he should:
1. never play again at any level
2. have his remaining years on his contract honoured at the prices stipulated in contract

Not true . The NRL has fair and reasonable values on players . You can't sign a player below the NRL's fair market value , and $50k , or $100k pro rata was well below Gasnier's market value . Dragons were given a special dispensation however largely on the basis of the entire contract .It is a rort that has hoodwinked the NRL .

$50k for a player returning from a couple of years in a sub-standard sport to play 1/3 of a season? Pro-rata it's the equivalent of $150k for the year. FMD - not much less than lol@50ff$ wanted to register Inglis's contract for.

The only person who loses out on not seeing through the back-ended contract is Gasnier himself.

Plenty of players have been moved onto new clubs on back ended contracts but you want to talk Salary cap rorting.

How about the NRL investigates how Braith Anasta could sign with Easts for 300k a season when the Bunnies offered him a 3 million dollar contract?

What about Fittler living in the penthouse of the Holiday Inn at Coogee for free whilst with Easts?

Well I don't think he will play again in the NRL and that is the genius of it . He will retire this year .He will probably be parachuted into an assistant ,consultant or coaching staff role at the dragons on good money , which of course now will be off - cap .They win and he wins as this allows him to also concentrate on his media career simultaneously .He already writes for the News Corp so that's a given. This then frees up much more valuable cap dollars for the dragons ,instead of paying $600k per year for a 30 year old centre which many people were questioning last year as it seemed crazy .

 How is that equivalent to what's going on here?

Spaz signed a backended contract which isn't going to be honoured, so he was basically signed on minimum wage. The Dragons must honour this contract, this is the price you should pay for rorting a premiership

That's your assertion which can't be proven so it's worthless.

I can assert that you sleep with sheep but does that make it true?

Please.

This is less of a scandal than the Sam Burgess contract.

The NRL already approved it.

Case closed.
