For the record, i dont give a shit that he worked for woolies or whatever other lame one liners we can throw at him ... everyone starts somewhere ... he didnt lose his one footy job because he was bad at it, there was some other incident .... yet the leaders at that club have given him references - all sounds odd tbh .... but doesnt say he cant do the job

I am concerned why the incident at wests happened ... but i know nothing about it so hopefully its not gonna be a problem

People can bitch all they want about not getting someone better but how do you know anyone better actually wanted the job

but how do you know anyone better actually wanted the job

depends what you mean by "better" according to the club he was the best applicant

I have heard that some of the names that have been mentioned here as ideal candidates had applied but were unsuccessful

We also need to remember that some of the people involved in the interview process were neutrals and nothing to do with our club, yet the usual suspects are already deathriding the club over a position that is not even filled yet and wont be until November

Who else applied but were unsuccessful? ... i miss plenty of stuff on here these days

It might not just be us knocking them back - they may decide they dont want it also - mismatched role expectations, money expectations, other opportunities etc

I saw again, piss off and support the Dragons or something.

Negative merkins like you aren’t what the club needs right now. You clearly hate the club, what the f**k are you even doing here?

Oh and yes I’m hugging a nut right now, it’s great, you should try it.

cant say as it cant be sourced but names that were mentioned here never even made it to the interview process which was a bit mind boggling, but like I said some of these people were professional neutrals

My main concern with a relatively inexperienced HoF is that

“The role was listed as having the following management responsibilities:

* Player roster & recruitment
* Salary cap
* Player contract negotiations
* Football operations – NRL & Junior Elite
* High Performance unit
* Player wellbeing & education
* Parramatta junior league
* Elite training facilities
* Budget compliance
* Media obligations
* Provide leadership & professional development to football department staff
* Foster & develop key relationships within the NRL community & key stakeholders”

The top 3 responsibilities listed here are the roster and recruitment, the salary cap and player contract negotiations. At most, O’Neill has had 6 months experience managing these responsibilities. How many players would he actually have recruited and negotiated with? I’d say a handful. As a club still in a rebuild phase and coming off a salary cap scandal only 2 years ago, I don’t think we were in a position to take a gamble on a relative rookie.

For what it’s worth our friend the lurker said (posted here already) that two former Canterbury forwards and an ex-international now in the media were applicants. Which IMO are the types of ex footy merkins that we need.

As I said last night, the FM needs to know about footy and be a good communicator at all levels. Not only does he need to be able to deal with grass roots footy, but he needs to be able to report to the CEO and board.

I think also that merkins are falsely exaggerating his role at the club. He is not the coach, nor is he CEO. He is there to take the load off BA.

“Under the structure the Eels will implement, Arthur and O'Neill will report to chief executive Bernie Gurr.”

“O'Neill's first task will be to implement the recommendations of the review which will be outlined next week. He will be across development, pathways recruitment, retention and specialist coaching.”

HoF seems like an unusual position. It's relatively new and isn't the same at all clubs. I believe some clubs don't even have a HoF. We're obviously not going for a Panthers style, where the hof runs the club, but where does our hof sit in the hierarchy and what are his responsibilities? Dunno. Glad I could clear all that up.
Anyway, not exactly inspired by the signing but definitely willing to give him a go.

Yep, same one. Last I recall hearing of him was leaving the Tigers a couple of years ago due to claims of misconduct, but apparently we’ve done our due diligence and have offered him the role.
Must have got the Donald Trump seal of approval. He only picks candidates of the highest quality, much like his latest pick for a Supreme Court judge, who ONLY had 3 woman complainants. Trump would rate his tally for groping woman as A+ so the judge is close to an F (in his opinion).

I find it odd that so many people that would have been involved in his exit from wests would be his reference

Eels turn to Mark O'Neill to help lead them out of the doldrums
Adrian Proszenko27 September 2018 — 7:00pm

Former Wests Tigers captain Mark O’Neill has been tasked with overseeing Parramatta’s resurrection after being appointed as the club’s head of football.

After an exhaustive process that resulted in officials from AFL, rugby and rugby league being shortlisted, O’Neill has been offered one of the toughest jobs in Australian sport. The Eels finished the year with the wooden spoon, a rapid decline after a top-four finish the previous season.

The appointment comes after an independent review of the football department found key areas were under-resourced and that the junior pathways and talent identification systems needed urgent attention.

There were more than 80 applicants and only nine contenders were interviewed. It's understood O'Neill, who has been working in a senior management role at Woolworths, met with chief executive Bernie Gurr and coach Brad Arthur as part of the process.

There is some upside as O’Neill prepares to take on the role. The Eels will have the new Western Sydney Stadium, one of the best sporting venues in the southern hemisphere, at their disposal from 2019. While the stadium won’t be available from round one, it’s hoped construction will be completed before Easter.

After eight years at head office, O'Neill returned to the Tigers as their general manager of football. However, the 43-year-old resigned after being investigated for alleged misconduct in September 2016 after only six months in the job. The Eels spoke with a number of NRL and Tigers officials about his character before deciding he was a suitable fit. They also sought the counsel of Shane McCurry, the man who oversaw the football review and had previously worked at Wests Tigers, before rubber-stamping the appointment.

O’Neill’s top priority will be to ensure Arthur has the resources and the support necessary to begin the climb back up the ladder, as well as overhauling a roster that failed to fire this season. The former forward is away overseas on holidays, but is expected to begin duties as the players and staff return from their off-season break.

I'm sure right now O'Neill is reading all about salary cap and how it works, but does anybody really understand how it works? Points 1 and 3 would be done in conjunction with the coach and maybe a committee. The big thing in his favour is he has plenty of NRL experience as a player and in HQ, and those contacts in HQ may have given him an advantage over the other candidates. He won't be doing all these things on his own, I'm sure someone is already responsible for keeping tabs on the salary cap.
