Matautia contract updates

I guess the NRL is now all about keeping the popular Sydney clubs winning at any cost. There is no limit to how many stars they can purchase.

I am not surprised in the least. Gun jnr crop who will be dismantled over the next 12 to 24 months with a couple staying on longer term. You can't keep them all but will we keep the right ones????

How Sione has not been locked up long term after forum users have been flogging themselves over him for a long while now is a mystery.

I keep thinking about Bennett's words re Sione being a club legend/captain at Newcastle. f**king lol. I know he's a young bloke but at the end of the day it's his call. If the brothers are unwanted at the Dogs towards the end of their new deal is sione going to move on to wherever a 'package' can be done for them???

For the NRL its always about money, TV ratings drive money and so all they care about it making sure the Sydney teams, Brisbane and Melbourne do okay, the rest are just cannon fodder for the rich club, so they can sell 26 rounds of TV games.

We are in the worst position of any clubs because the NRL don't care about our performance or success, just how much money we cost, hence their screwing down all costs.

Frankly our success will be measured by how far we get away from the spoon, not winning premierships.

Looks like the boys are a bigger package deal then Boyd and Bennett.

Whilst Sione started off sensationally just how much of our cap should we be willing to tie up with them? Serious question, as it looks like their manager will have them on rep $ when its all said and done.

Surely we have as much to spend as the Dogs, who are taking part in the Grand f**king Final this week.

It is just getting dead set embarrassing isn't it.

The NRL will sit back and let this happen - in fact I would go so far as to say they want it to happen, boosts one of their big Sydney clubs.

The 12 month sale period is just about giving the glamour clubs time to pick us apart.

That's the sort of owner we want.

It's absurd. Farcical even. There's no way in hell we'd be losing these boys if even Tinks was our owner, let alone someone like Koukash. Our ownership isn't going to be resolved any time soon, I feel... and the club will just continue to disintegrate in the meantime. The NRL don't give a shit as long as the glamour clubs are winning trophies.

I don't even know who to blame. The NRL is just f**ked and broken at the core. The Dogs are merkins. Our own administrators are f**king muppets. It's just a clusterf**k of "why do I even care anymore?". I'm not sure I can continue to put time into this club... next year might be their last chance to keep my interest.

Have to say I feel for Newcastle fans here. They're all talented kids, especially Sione. It sucks watching a cashed up club waltz in and sign your kids for top dollar.

That said, Newcastle need to put a broom through the front office.

I know everyone in here likes to shit on Bennett, but there's absolutely no way he would have let this happen...just sayin'.

No way in hell this would have happened under Bennett. BUT THANK GOD STONEY IS BACK, AMIRITE? Thank god Bennett is gone and won't stifle us with his boring gameplans! Forget the fact that we've played our most attractive football of the past 10 years under Bennett towards the back ends of the last 2 seasons. Nope, totally disregard that fact. It's all about having locals at every level. Locals ALL THE WAY DOWN.

Our supporters desire mediocrity. They crave it. I'm seriously losing my shit over this one. I hate to say it, but I finally know how it feels to be a Canberra fan. Rock bottom - we've arrived.

I think there is a tad bit of overreacting in here. Its a disappointing turn of events, sure but nothing is set in stone from what I've read

It's not really Stone himself that I have the problem with, actually I've been a bit of a Stone fanboy in the past. It's his total unattractiveness to anyone outside of Newcastle that particularly bothers me. The bloke sells himself horribly and comes across like a plank of wood in interviews.

The bloke hasn't been able to pick up another NRL gig in the past 3 years, and there have been plenty going. The rest of the NRL just has zero interest in Rick Stone, and this unfortunately very much includes prospective recruits.

We still have until Round 13 next year to fix this problem. My main concern is this shouldn't have been an issue to begin with. There shouldn't have ever been any doubt that these kids would stay in Newcastle. They grew up here. They've played all of their footy here and we are cashed up to the eyeballs as far as salary cap is concerned. There's just no excuse for the current situation. It's amateur shit.

It's not just this incident, JW. Aren't you sick of this shit with our club? This is just one of any number of straws on the camels back for me. I don't know how much more the poor bastard can carry.

Look, I think this is just as likely (if not more so) just their manager boosting their price up at the Knights.

Thing is though it still shows the club's incompetence. Every other club (save for maybe the Raiders) would have had this sorted ages ago. We however are now in a position where one of two things will happen:

1) they leave

2) they stay but we end up paying them ridiculously high contracts to make it happen. In fact now that they've been copping it from fans over he article it will make admin get desperate and throw everything at them...hurting the rest of the squad in the process. Now I don't mind paying whatever we have to for Sione, but at the end of the day Chanel and Pat are reserve graders or fringe first graders at best but you can bet we'll end up paying them 10x more than they're worth and we'll have an unbalanced squad and probably lose a lot of our other young talent.

Either way we lose but competent clubs don't let this sort of stuff happen. We're just amateur and how could you expect anything different with Matt Gidley and Michael Hagan running things?

f**k the club because they're too hopeless to get what should be a simple retention together given the deep pockets we should have.

If this is true, though... then the NRL is flat out broken. Who are the Dogs losing besides Ennis to make this plausible? We've bled a f**kload of players and can't keep our most promising juniors? I dead set give up on the NRL and the Knights if this is the case - the competition is hopelessly broken. We have no chance of ever succeeding again if we can't keep our juniors, because we sure as shit have a hard time recruiting anyone from outside.

Dogs lost Barba last year, didn't replace him.

Lost Inu, Brown, Ennis. Signed Loko, Rona, Lichaa.

They pulled out of Fifita deal mate. The Dogs have plenty to spend.

For 2016 I'd imagine Sam Perrett will retire too and Chase Stanley is off contract along with Thompson then too.

I'm reading elsewhere that the reporter that 'broke' this story was just on kofm saying that it's likely a negotiating tactic and that the boys want to stay in Newie. Looks like we'll be paying big overs to keep them. Also seems like their manager is running the show, not the boys themselves.

Fingers crossed we get this over the line asap.
