I found that comment from Macgregor concerning. Before Broncos were down to 10 men, we offered very little in attack. We only got back into the game when they were a man down. Au mau and Thompson made some good breaks last night but where were the players trailing them???

IMHO our defence is still poor. Au mau was again found wanting last night. Personally I do think we still are a few forwards short of a finals team.

Nothing has changed under Mary and his mates assistants jobs for the boys team, I mean re defence, our goal line D is embarrassing.

We still have no line speed it's a joke, Our markers r fd and no wrestle!!

Come on we were facing the spoon, couldn't put any points on the board, players dejected and were getting dominated in every facet of the game. Whether you like him or not, or agree with his appointment, Mary has improved our play significantly. Yes, our defence is weak, but geez you can't expect miracles guven the time.

Yes agreed, Mary's only had half a season and Benji as well. He needs a full off season with the current squad and and add a couple of big forwards.

Overall, it's been such a disruptive year with no stability in the halves until Benji came and of course a change of coach halfway through.

I think we've gone ok considering.

If we play against spoon contenders or teams with 12 men every week next year then McGregor won't be a complete catastrophe

2 hit ups to the middle.

Pass to a playmaker, he passes to a 2nd rower/sweeper.

Another hit up to the middle.

Bomb.

Fear inspiring.

Yes..I think there were some positive signs coming from Mary, I think Benji and Widdop together next year will provide a lot for the team moving forward.
I think 3 years was way too long for Mary, but I am sure he's not on the same money as what Tim Sheen would have wanted and the risks the same, so if Mary fs up..his final year pay out won't hurt as much.

I expect no less than Top 6 next year!

The team is potentially a team well on the way up if Mc Gregor get's it right. Now that he's the head coach long term, I will leave it up to him to find the answers, the team has excellent strike players in the backs so next year and beyond there'll be no excuses. For now I am getting behind Mc Gregor, there's literally no choice.

Yep!
Get with the program
Let's hope for top six in '15
Mary's win:loss ratio is indicative of around this kind of potential
Build for 16 & 17

We have talent in our squad, particularly in the backs. That's why we've won games this year, through individuals. Whether it's Dugan or Marshall doing something special, or Morris or Nighty flying through the air to score in the corners. Very few of our tries have come via sweeping backilne movements. This is what's been lacking for 3 years.

I saw zero evidence of a well drilled side during Price's reign and haven't really seen it under Mary either. But it's only really been half a season for Mary so hopefully he can turn this around.

With the talent in the backs given a full offseason, and the possible addition of some forwards, top 6 needs to be minimum for 2015.

By re-reading the posts in this thread something stands out to me that we can probably all agree on...

"Football Operations" reviews and audits, winning or losing, Mary or not; we just don't want to hear bullshit anymore.

That's not leadership, it is popularity and politics.

For me, the legacy that will define Steve Price was his profound belief in fairy-tales. His stupid commentary of the status-quo just beggars belief. And you couldn't help but think that he took his cues from management.

Everything from being "weally pwoud" of their efforts in shit game where they played shit and needed a rocket up their collective arses - to Peter Doust's tacit vindication of Steve Price's inept coaching performance because "...we have lots of injuries you know"

Bullshit ...It was cultural thing for three years at Dragons - which ultimately led to countless allegations of mediocrity.

Whilst critical of the process that appointed him, I'm full-on supporting Mary in the role because that is what is the best thing from now on. I like him too, but of course that means Jack-DeBelin Shit if the players don't respect him.

Yes, let the task of re-building the dragon's game finally begin in earnest.

The early signs are good.

Insofar as how the team is performing - I just don't want to hear anymore bullshit.

Never again.

Can't understand how there is any improvement with McGregor. The players didn't want to play under Price anymore,Benji has improved with every game which was to be expected,Widdop has gone backwards,Dugan has gone backwards in the centres, defence is still sh*t.
The coaching change was always going to bring a better attitude which was lost with Price.
Lets see what changes,if any, we have in personel.

It is most likely to be the $$$$$. Doust is always looking for a bargain and Mary comes cheap. Mary's appointment solves some Boardroom politics and at first sight, is a very economical solution.

Time will tell whether this gamble proves to be a winner. My view is that the Board should not be taking such risks with regards to the prosperity of our Club. I would have thought the events of the past 3 years would have had a huge impact on the Board Member's attitude on such matters however, it seems not to be the case.

I agree its a gamble, but unless you're getting Bennett or Bellamy, any coaching appointment is a gamble.

Definitely Mary wasn't my first choice, but when Bennett turned us down, I didn't really see any other options. Sure names like Sheens, Smith and Taylor were talked about, but none of those options filled me with confidence either. Based on what I've seen in the last half of the season, at least the players have responded to Mary which is a step in the right direction.

Unfortunately, I think we're still a couple of years away. We won't be able to contend until:

1. the backs develop some combinations (including sorting out the fullback and centre positions once and for all)
2. addition of 2 props and a hooker (maybe another edge backrower as well)
3. bring through some of our better juniors (Dufty and Bird)

Its up to Mary to oversee the above...hopefully he can do it.

If Mary is the only coaching option in the world today, then things are horribly bad.Did the board do a search, doubt it.Mary was always going to be the man.
Ivan Cleary has a plan, rid the dead wood, and results are there, what are we going to do.

Mate I agree with you. I really like what the Panthers have done this year, but even Cleary had a couple of rough years. Finished 2nd last his first year, and 10th last year.

Difference being, he had the full support of the Board and his job was never in question. Effectively, he had time to implement his plan.

I keep saying, it takes time to build and succeed, the Panthers are an example of that.

Mary had us competing for the semis up till the final week (even allowing for the Price factor),. This in itself is relatively positive.

I don't think it takes time to build and succeed. Many teams have turned it around in 1 season.

Roosters went from last in 2009 to second in 2010,

Doggies went from last to second on the ladder in 2009.

penrith won it all in 2003 after finishing 12th the season before.

Don't believe this BS that you get fed about a re-building phase mate...A smart team spends the money wisely and rebuilds in a year

After consideration, that is a great post.

The game is a billion dollar industry. Decisions are made by the hour. Re-building is a smart way of saying we have stuffed it up. Im speaking generally here, not just re our club.

Sponsors, fans etc dont have 3-5 years to wait for a competitive team. Not should they.

The only matter that takes time is "gelling" a new team. Proper decisions re recruitment and management are made well before this.

Saints are building nicely even Phil Gould can see this. The Dragons backline is looking better than most teams it is the forwards that need a little bit of work and in the offseason hopefully Saints will work on this and come out better in 2015. Peter Mata'utai is a gun player and I hope they hold onto this guy. Runciman will also come good so they have some great back up when Dylan Farrell is back.

If they can snag Kasiano and Leahroyd Lars then Saints will do well. Those 2 will make a huge difference to the pack.
