Using population as a argument then fiji had no right beating (hammering) GB in the 7s final..800k v 70m people..

Countries like ours,you set up AIS after bombing in 1976 iirc..we had increased national lottery funding after winning just 1 gold in atlanta 1996...as good as our stratigies,of focusing our efforts on certain sporrs, are its will never compare to the communist government of chinas program or the american collegate system...

I won't even argue with you I'm a bit down on confidence with our team, which seems horrible but they don't have the headspace atm.

But a few years ago someone told me funding for our sports was getting less and less, it was a gnawing feeling I tried to ignore in the opening days of this olympics.

Personally I feel like we have the potential to be quite competitive with athletics but it doesn't seem to get very much attention at all!

Population is not everything to do with it, but it helps a lot. When a first world country with a big population decides to take the Olympics seriously, they'll find it easier to win gold medals than a country like australia with 24 million people. Fiji dominate Rugby 7s despite their small population for a number of reasons: rugby is their national sport; their lifestyle; and their natural size, speed and athleticism, which is nurtured by their lifestyle. But when it comes to overall gold medal counts, population definitely helps. You'd be an absolute fool to deny that.

The frustrating thing is they've only lifted in the last couple of olympics (and that's because they hosted it) and are capable of being a top tier olympic squad, we aren't we just dont have the size.
I get sick of seeing team USA dominate, its only in the winter olympics they get humbled.
(USA gets fired up about winning the hockey only for Canada to put them in their place!)

I don't think it's because we hosted it as much as it's because the lottery started pumping money in.
96 was such a wake up call but that lottery money obviously doesn't get results tomorrow the benefits have really started to be seen in the last few years as there's an entire generation grown up with that funding.
Obviously hosting hasn't hurt either.

Australia does have a huge advantage in that it's not always pissing it down outside
