How can it be a national sport with teams in only 3 of the states?

And you are wrong. The prelim final they showed got 250k viewers, which is far more than watch some of the crap ancient films they show in Melb. That 250k was outside of the 30k that were actually at the game.

Look - our U16 team is 100% victorians. If you don't think that shows that a foothold is growing in Melb then thats ridiculous.

well, no one else wants a bar of it - we're struggling to even get Vic to like it and it's already taken over a decade for not even luke warm success

you'll be surprised - the 250k probably came last in it's respective timeslot....the other 400k we're watching the secret of tutankamun on channel 7:lol:

Every club has access to every young player available, across the world let alone QLD

the QLD clubs and the storm have 1st look at all of QLD. the players are in their feeder clubs.

if you expect every club to have a scout in every corner of the globe, then where do you draw the line on the costs? most clubs in the NRL operate as public companies limited by guaranatee. they have no investors other than members who pay a small fee, and generally have to rely on the resources they can generate and provide within this to continue as a solvent business.

fact is, Brisbane and Melbourne have the advantage of greater resources at their disposal. even outside of the parity of the salary cap, they're using the funds of the company associated with the competition administrator to operate the team.

Good job he wasn't around when NSW clubs were formed and attracting less than 5,000 to games or RL would only exist in England and France!

I think we are wasting our breath. The world is changing rapidly and the NRL must become truly national and it knows it. Blokes like Big Country will be left behind. Thats just the way it is.

Yep. The sad thing is if people get their way and the storm was ever finished up rather than supported, some of the Sydney fans would still be laughing about what programmes channel 9 can show whilst their own "real" clubs are heading toward administration due to reduced tv deals for a sport that isn't national.

I agree. As a League supporter i a minor State I know perhaps more than anybody how much the NSW/QLD inward looking perspective affects the growth of the game nationally.

To its credit the AFL has taken this issue head on. Thankfully it has made heaps of mistakes on the way we can learn from and avoid.

Something that has maybe been missed in all this is how long it takes to really grow a sport in a new state/country. Its not just about getting 12,000 members through the turnstiles at the stadium. Its about getting young kids to choose league instead of soccer or AFL. It's about growing the youth leagues and getting local products from them into the toyota cup team. It's about increasing knowledge and interest in the game outside of the storm. It's about people who get into the Storm passing their love of the game to their kids who may then become members.

This stuff all takes a LONG time. Long as in much longer than 10 years which is how long the storm have been around.

Anyone who thinks you can put a league team in an AFL obsessed state and suddenly expects a hundred thousand screaming fans shutting down the airport to see their arrival back in Melb is kidding themselves.

Have a look at the business plan for the gold coast afl team and their targets are quite modest for a long period of time. The AFL are clever enough to realise though that even if big crowds don't flock there for a long time, the money they spend on the venture will ensure they are a much stronger code in the future.

Melbourne can go with the bastards that created them, fed them and gave them a free ride.
Then reward a Rugby League district with a top grade team.

f**k Melbourne.

lol OK- Lets go back to Endeavour Oval in the 80s and play in front of 2721 people on a Saturday afternoon. Return the rights to the ABC and bring Jim Maxwell and Debby Spillane back to commentate.

That should sort things out.

No, let's go to Bluetongue stadium in front of 20000+ Rugby League fans.
Or somewhere in QLD, where people will have local representation in the top grade for the hundreds of junior Rugby League clubs.

But it's far better to spend millions of dollars propping up a franchise that has no junior structure within 1000km, no local (as in f**kING STATE) juniors and has the pick of the best NSW and QLD have to offer.

f**k Melbourne. Let the clubs in the area rally for an entry into the top grade.

No junior structure??? maybe you shouldn't go throwing statements like that around when you have no f**ken idea about the junior system down here so STFU and go play on the road.

as a supporter of a club, my interest and investment (emotional and financial) is to see my club win the premiership. the agenda and goals of competitions such as the AFL and NRL in favouring certain teams and the benefits they're able to promote over others prevent this.

the AFL did the job in ensuring 4 of this decade's premierships, and 6 GF's featured teams in 'markets' they are targetting. the NRL has leant this way as well, with teams owned by News Ltd also winning 4 premierships, and featuring in 6 GFs this decade as well.

so why should i bother putting the time into the game as a supporter when the competition is simply used to satisfy agenda and administrators attempt to give certain teams an advantage to be competitive in the markets they choose?

that's right, the australian sporting public is dumb. its become more of a 'my sport is bigger and better your sport' BS, rather than achieving some sort of integrity within the compeition itself.

Who most likely already have Pay subscriptions and are already present within the regular FTA ratings data.

CC offers nothing to the game in terms of increased television revenue, which whether you like it or not is what keeps the game alive.

Everyone agrees QLD needs further expansion, that shouldn't be to the detriment of development areas however.

Equal access to these players that every other club has.

& consign the sport to minnow status outside of NSW & QLD

Yep, simply genius Drake

Don't crack at it at Melbourne because your own team was too sh*t to win a finals game.

as a supporter of a club, my interest and investment (emotional and financial) is to see my club win the premiership. the agenda and goals of competitions such as the AFL and NRL in favouring certain teams and the benefits they're able to promote over others prevent this.

The NRL may like the fact that Melbourne are successful on field, but they do nothing whatsoever to ensure that happens.

Since 2000, in 10 seasons, 8 of the 16 teams presently in the competition have won a premiership. In 10 years, half the competition has won the title... How could one possibly argue your team, whoever you support (I assume you support an NRL side, not just a typical old Newtown sook) is "prevented" from winning a premiership?

the AFL did the job in ensuring 4 of this decade's premierships, and 6 GF's featured teams in 'markets' they are targetting. the NRL has leant this way as well, with teams owned by News Ltd also winning 4 premierships, and featuring in 6 GFs this decade as well.

The AFL allowed increased salary caps for the two northern sides, they continue to allow larger playing list sizes than the other clubs and allow them priority access in a draft system to local players.

Name me one thing the NRL do that is comparable to that?

so why should i bother putting the time into the game as a supporter when the competition is simply used to satisfy agenda and administrators attempt to give certain teams an advantage to be competitive in the markets they choose?

Again, how does the NRL do any such thing.

that's right, the australian sporting public is dumb. its become more of a 'my sport is bigger and better your sport' BS, rather than achieving some sort of integrity within the compeition itself.

No, the general sporting public isn't dumb. Those who who have no vision outside of their own local parochial blinkers are the imbeciles.

So you think having a team on the central coast will bring tens of millions to the game in sponsorship/tv deals like having a team in Melbourne would? Not to mention the Storm will be averaging close to that average at home games within the next few years which pretty much nullifies your piss poor argument anyway.

Ahhh to live an ignorant, naive and simple existance like you.
